Gaming Google: a new way to go negative

Google puts a world of information at your fingertips, but when it’s election season, let the searcher beware.
The New York Times reports on the new phenomenon of “Google bombing,” whereby activists manipulate the search engine by flooding the Web with negative references to candidates and repeatedly cross-linking to specific articles and sites.
The liberal blog group MyDD.com (Direct Democracy) has targeted about 50 Republican candidates this way. Thus, a search on Arizona Sen. John Kyl will return, high on the page, a highly critical piece by an alternative weekly in Phoenix.
Very clever — but it’s a two-edged sword. No doubt Republicans are crafting a suitable response.

Why exactly would we expect Demos to play by the rules? Their party platform is all about breaking the rules from illegal immigration to gay marriage to abortion. As a matter of fact they have never met a rule they didn’t think needed to be broken.

After all rules impede personal freedom. Rules also keep chaos from reigning supreme, but anarchy needs chaos to exist, therefore rule breaking is an established method of undermining civilization.

If the rest of us didn’t have to deal with the mess left by these compu-terrorists we wouldn’t care what they did. They remind one of two year olds who put their fingers in their ears so they won’t hear mommy say “eat your veggies.” These kind of actions along with their inability to make a point without resorting to the basest profanity is a constant reminder why I don’t vote for anyone endorsed by these people.

Compared to stripping Americans of the Bill of Rights and making torture legal, “google bombing” is a very little little thing.

Lawbreakers in the Whitehouse? No way. Yes….WAY.

The laws implicated by the Administration’s actions include federal laws against making false statements to congress [sic]; federal laws and international treaties prohibiting torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment; federal laws concerning retaliating against witnesses and other government employees; Executive Orders concerning leaking and other misuse of intelligence; federal regulations and ethical requirements governing conflicts of interest; the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act; communications privacy laws; the National Security Act; and the Fourth Amendment.

    I’m sure there is more.

“Back in 2004, the rightwing bloggers came up with the idea of google bombing the name John Kerry so that negative articles came up first on the search page when people googled his name. it worked.

Chris Bowers decided we should do the same thing with our wonderful GOP opponents this time and has come up with a handy list of links to make this easy. ”

BTW, Google-bombing has actually been around almost as long as Google itself:

The history of Google bombing goes back to at least 1999, when Microsoft became a target because of its dominance of the software industry. Anyone who entered the query “More evil than Satan” got Microsoft’s Web site as the top result.

Semenhair and dicklickMy posts were all substance.1st point:Google bombing is not illegal and has been used by many other groups to place there particular views at the top of a “hit list”.

2nd point:The GOP participated in a federal offense when it jammed the dems phone lines during the last presidential. (memory pills anyone?)

3rd point:THE LAWS BROKEN BY THE GOP

The laws implicated by the Administration’s actions include federal laws against making false statements to congress [sic]; federal laws and international treaties prohibiting torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment; federal laws concerning retaliating against witnesses and other government employees; Executive Orders concerning leaking and other misuse of intelligence; federal regulations and ethical requirements governing conflicts of interest; the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act; communications privacy laws; the National Security Act; and the Fourth Amendment.

Okay, I’ll say it.They should find a better way to get a positive message out.More substance and point #4:GOP should not be pointing fingers UNTIL they get there own plainly illegal and unethical practices corrected.

Oh, and I won’t say f*ck you this time either.Typical winger behavior, make no substantial points other than libs are mean, and then leave right after declaring victory.

    Need any more “substance”?

I don’t remember saying anything about illegal. I didn’t say any thing about illegality . There are a lot of things that aren’t illegal that are unethical, unfair and underhanded. It doesn’t matter who does them.

In this case I was referring to the rules of civilized conduct, which includes being able to make a point without calling people names and using foul language. Something that several of the posters to this link can’t seem to do. Maturity sometimes fixes that problem but not always.

At a time when the future of our nation hangs in the balance it is incumbent on every citizen to find out the truth about those running for office, no matter what it is. If you approve of the platform a person espouses and can handle whatever baggage comes with him, vote for him. I want to know the truth about the candidates for good or ill not what somebody who hates him thinks about him. Maybe if we could manage to keep civil tongues in our mouths something would get done besides whining and complaining.

BTW, I’m not backing down on Al Gore used Willie Horton first. It was during a debate withDu-cockkiss. Al didn’t use Horton’s name, but everyone knew who he was talking about. As Slate (not my fave) says, Gore brought it up, Bush used it.

    hotlick,

“BTW, I’m not backing down on Al Gore used Willie Horton first.”

Do you enjoy looking like an ignorant idiot?

During the Dukakis debate, Gore said that 2 furloughed prisoners had committed MURDER while on leave.

He said NOTHING about rape, or the prisoner’s race.

William Horton committed rape, NOT murder, after escaping during furlough.

Your claim, “but everyone knew who [Gore] was talking about” is total BS.

Also, hundreds of violent crimes had been committed by other furloughed prisoners on leave. The program deserved Gore’s (general) criticism.

Slate? Timothy Noah omits Gore cited murders (not rape). But Noah says it’d have been “uncharacteristic” of Gore to use Horton against Dukakis. http://www.slate.com/id/1003919
