Foley has so many excuses, so little time

It takes a big man to admit he’s done wrong. Perhaps that’s why Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., has opted for an easier way to deal with disgrace: excuses.
Foley wasted no time citing alcoholism as the reason he solicited sex from underage House pages; now he also claims to have been sexually abused as a child. By an unnamed clergyman. Before the day is out, I fully expect him to mention his years of captivity in a Turkish prison.
Please. We don’t need to hear why it was impossible to behave with integrity; things are tough all over.

Foley is a staunch Republican and that is something the GOP party leadership cannot deny no matter how many ways they spin this mess.

Just the fact these hypocrit Conservative Republicans are defending Foley by either their silence or trying to shift the blame to others, should show the voters exactly what is important to these hypocrits. They are afraid of losing their power – plain and simple.

You cannot tell me that if this would have been a Democrat in Foley’s position, that every Republican would be in front of every news camera demanding the Democrat’s head on a platter.

And wasn’t it poetic that Hastert shows up on Rush Limbaugh’s show yesterday? That choice of his where to go to tell his story tells its own story. The people that support Rush are the very ones that are sitting around trying to justify their leadership’s inability to control one of their own perverts.

Aide says he reported Foley 3 years agoDEVLIN BARRETTAssociated PressWASHINGTON – Speaker Dennis Hastert’s political support showed signs of cracking on Wednesday as Republicans fled the fallout from an election-year scandal spawned by steamy computer messages from disgraced Rep. Mark Foley to teenage male pages.

At the same time, the congressional aide who last week counseled Foley to quit said in an Associated Press interview he first warned Hastert’s aides more than three years ago about Foley’s worrisome conduct toward pages. That was long before GOP leaders acknowledged hearing of it.

The aide, Kirk Fordham, who resigned Wednesday, said he had “more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene” at the time.

    JR–

Thanks for that reply to Outhouse.

    You got it exactly right.

A lot of us are wondering if that’s why gays like Foley and the recently deceased Jim West, R-Fecal Matter, preyed on young boys?

They wanted to be gay men, but they couldn’t because of the culture of gay-hatred they were part of.

Plaid Adder puts it perfectly in her journal:

“Mark Foley wants you to know that he is a gay man.”

“It would perhaps be more accurate to say that Mark Foley aspires to be a gay man. Up until this moment, anyway, what Mark Foley appears to have been is a hypocritical, self-hating, deeply closeted asshole who was aware that he had same-sex desires but was so afraid of being exposed in front of his rabidly gay-baiting Republican colleagues and constituents that he channeled them all toward teenaged boys who, because they were apprentices in the patronage system that Foley as a Congressman could control, were not in a position to expose him. So far, everyone has been talking about Foley as if he is one of the slavering, lust-crazed, depraved internet predators that his own legislation was supposedly trying to eradicate. That may well be; but I think it is at least as likely that his choice of love object was strategic.

“This is what makes me so angry, and this is what I want people to understand. A scandal like this is not just the result of one man’s individual depravity. It is one forseeable consequence of a political culture determined to drive what they define as “deviant” sex underground and to keep it there where nobody can see it. They don’t necessarily believe they can _eradicate_ it; they just want to keep it invisible. And that’s why they are trying to shove everyone back into the closet, even though it is clear to anyone who’s ever been there that the closet is not a healthy place. Men like Mark Foley are produced, in part, by the closet; and that is one of the more compelling arguments for blowing up the fucking closet once and for all.”

Unfortunately, politics has become a game and a dirty game at that. The Republicans perfected personal nasty attacks and it was encouraged by the likes of Rush Limbaugh.

Just take an objective look at Limbaugh’s website – it looks just like something out of a sleazy tabloid.

The sad part is that there are people who live for the GOP and there are those that live for the Democrats. Nothing else matters but winning.

While our country is slipping into being the biggest debtor nation, good paying jobs are being outsourced to make the few richer and our own children are not even safe in their schools – we have no business telling any other country how to live.

Foley is just a symptom of a very deep cancer in politics. But this cancer has been growing for years and it was only through the GOP’s complete and total control over all 3 branches of government that they have gotten away with it. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

“A lot of us are wondering if that’s why gays like Foley and the recently deceased Jim West, R-Fecal Matter, preyed on young boys? They wanted to be gay men, but they couldn’t because of the culture of gay-hatred they were part of.”– CapnAmerica

Capn: Listen to you. You are a Foley enabler!

Distilling a few paragraphs, you say that because it is hard being a homo, Foley was forced to slink around, pursuing boys. Blame an institution and avoid personal responsiblity. The left’s anthem.

But of course in this case you know that this thing has no legs unless it can somehow be extended beyond a single pervert.

So the thrust (so to speak) of your argument, is that the Republicans are to blame for Foley’s actions because they don’t embrace the homosexual agenda? Your theory is that Foley was frustrated at being the trials of being homosexual and that his answer was to go after boys for gratification instead of men!!??? And that makes sense to you? Did you ever think that he just might be a pedophile??

Sometimes Capn, you are such a moronic partisan.

  75. Posted October 4, 2006 at 11:12 pm | Permalink

Yes, it does make sense to me, Outlander.

They couldn’t admit what they are so they pervert their impulses toward the vulnerable.

It in no way excuses or enables someone like Foley. It explains what happens when a culture of hatred (i.e., Republicanism) tells people they are sick because of what they are.

As for him simply being a pedophile, that doesn’t really work. The boys were underage but just barely. Usually pedophiles go for little kids . . .

Hank Price almost sounds proud that Hastert won’t go down. Hank probably hasn’t been paying attention to open infighting among the Republican leadership, or that several prominent conservatives and right-wing groups, including the Washington Times, have called for Hastert’s resignation.

But I guess all of that takes a backseat to you. Why? “Because you’re a Republican.” You don’t care what these people do, they can do no wrong in your eyes. And if, on the off chance they do screw up, well, its either the liberals fault somehow, or the Democrats did it too! “Clinton’s fault! Clinton’s fault.”

The constant right-wing spin is literally sickening. This Foley affair has shown conclusively that the right-wing media, and their hard-right followers like Hank, do not live in reality.

And yes, Fox News DID show Foley’s name on the screen with a (D) next to it.

(you do know, don’t you, that the voters will have to vote for Foley’s name – too little time to change the ballot according to Florida law?)

FISCAL Conservatives understand that you do not grant class favorable tax cuts…..or ANY tax cuts during a “war”.

SOCIAL conservatives must be wondering what the heck to do. They and RELIGIOUS conservatives are supposed to be controlling things! That is what the neocons promised them. But aside from bucking 75% of the population and banning certain vital medical research, neocons have been all talk.

Your comparison is not valid. You are reducing this to the indiscretions of the individual. This is about more.

You ran back to Clinton. That is the default retreat of your “side”. “Let’s talk about the past!” For the record, Clinton was impeached. He was not impeached for the crime of which he was originally investigated. The witch hunt couldn’t prove that. But they did find something that no one really needed to know and Clinton was impeached. Hey I wish he would have been removed. Then Gore would have been President and the disaster that is bush would never have happened. But he was not removed and that really frosts the morality squad and the Clinton haters. Tough. The Constitutional process played itself through, end of story. Get over it.

TM you win an honor here. Yours is the LAST post in the “what about Clinton” stream that I will ever entertain.

    Let’s talk about now.

Mark Foley resigned. SO he really got his wish. He wanted out anyway. He wanted to retire some time ago. Republican leadership in the House and the GOP wanted him to stay. They did not want to lose the seat. SOME of those who wanted him to stay MUST have known about his questionable character. But they wanted him to stay anyway.

House majority leader Beohner, Republican congressmen Reyolds and Alexander have ALL said that speaker of the House Dennis Hastert KNEW what Foley was at least a year ago. Other revelations indicate that Hastert and the GOP leadership knew anywhere from 1 to 10 years ago.

That TM is a conspiracy to conceal the despicable activities of a man for the purposes of perpetuating Republican power.

    TM?

You are NOT nobody. I believe that. I am sure almost everyone here believes that.

You are right to believe that many in our government feel that way. That is our fault.

WE you and I and Farmgrrl and C F and Hank and Heckler and XXX and all the rest of the posters here; and all those who don’t post here let alone vote….WE are American AND its government.

    Of by and for remember?

“I understand your anger and frustration…”

Well TM we would not agree on much. We probably are angry and frustrated for very different reasons. But at least the sentiment we share. That’s a start.

“….but don’t you think ALL AMERICANS are disgusted….”

No TM I don’t. Half of the elgible voters in this country don’t take part. Hey it’s not all their fault that. They are busy making a living and TRYING to enjoy it. Half of those who DO vote are pretty happy just now. Right or wrong their “side” is “winning”. I fault them just a little less than those who aint in the game. It is human nature to choose up sides and fight tooth and nail and not think too awful much about anything but the fight.

“Everyone in D.C. is a partisan obstrutionist.”

    See above.

    “Everyone is crying foul.”

Uh no. Like I said above, things are pretty hunky dory for SOME. THEY only cry foul when something threatens that comfortable position.

Now after this TM and readers, I would default to my own take and blame TM’s “side” for all the problems she cites. (Lost jobs, outsourcing, health care etc.)

    But then TM, you say”

    “THEY don’t represent us!”

Well, we have only ourselves to blame for that. (or tricks with elections)

The are SUPPOSED to represent us. It is our job to make sure they do. Now to do that, we might have to think less in terms of winning and losing and more in terms of the greater good.

    “they represent themselves and MONEY”

Yup. That is what unrestricted capitalism does. It creates haves and have nots.

“ALL OF THEM, republicans and Democrats!!Oh, they might offer a few words of comfort by telling us what they think we want to hear, but it’s all in vain and empty spin. Nothing significant ever gets done.”

TM? I’m not, as you know, religious. BUT AMEN!

I won’t offend your sensiblities TM. You will have to use your imagination a bit.

Michael Moore has said that the Republicans will f— you and the Democrats will say “I love you! and then f— you. Like I say, haves and have nots. The “haves” have a vested interest in protecting the “haves”. The “have nots” can only look to those who make their living on the “have nots”. It’s a symbiotic thing.

“They’re all a bunch of blathering, self absorbed nit-wits”

No TM, not all of them. But they all get made that way because WE let them, or force them. WE built the institution. WE are responsible for the inmates.

    TM?

I am on the “left”. You are on the “right”. It is YOUR leaders that currently have “the power”. Personally I am for divided government. The “left” is better thinking as to society. The “right” is better thinking as to personal freedom…..well they USED to be.

Maybe if we could agree to see the greater good for ONE and all we could find a place to meet. But we CAN’T do that until you ditch the “I am nothing” thinking. That only empowers those entrenched on BOTH “sides”.

Wow, late to a fun thread.

Hank says: “Swift boating technique? Are you admitting then that the libs are lying about Foley and Hastert?”

    heheheh Hankie.

Are YOU admitting then that the swiftboaters are indeed liars? hee hee hee hee

And TM, I thought all sins were equal and there was no order of magnitude in sin.

So if clinton had a moral laps while PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES…

…what about king george’s well documented lies? WHILE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

Isnt there something about “thou shalt not lie?” in your bible?

So clinton had a moral laps for adultry and was punished.

King george has continued moral lapes for lying.

No punishment, only praise from the holiest of holys on this blog.

heheheh. If you cant see the hypocrisy there, you must have a BIG log in your eye…..

…and to beat some wide eyed innocent sounding wingnut sure to say….

    “what documented lies”.

    heheheheh.

Do your own damn research. We’ve danced THAT dance before with nathan.

There are entire books and websites documenting king george’s lies.

If you are too lazy to look them up, but chose the lazy route of saying “prove he lied”

you must be a redneck republican

Oh we are hearing from Matt Drudge today. HE is back on the bash Nancy Pelosi road last I looked.

I wonder if we will hear from Heckler and Hank today. I kinda doubt it. Drudge got them to stick their butts out in the air and has, as usual, left them to walk back to this county after having their butts kicked into the next one.

    J R – maybe it’s Pelosi’s fault Foley dod what he did.

However, I still like this explanation”

Closet LifeBut interestingly, it isn’t only social conservatives discussing a possible tie between sexual orientation and Foley’s predatory behavior with pages.Richard Isay, a Weisll Cornell Medical College professor of psychiatry and author who has studied gay men and women, says his psychiatric studies show that closeted gays who work for organizations that are inhospitable to them may be more prone to “doing things that are going to get themselves into trouble.”

“If the atmosphere of the Republican Party is not hospitable to gay people … you’re going to have more problems,” Isay said.In his academic opinion, Isay believes that Foley’s pathology includes “much more than just this kind of behavior — hitting on pages,” but likely includes other kind of secretive behavior. He also believes that Foley “had an enormous need to be caught and punished. You don’t send e-mails to underage pages unless you want to be caught, and that’s directly related to impoverished self-esteem and the need to be punished.”Gay conservative writer Andrew Sullivan wrote on his blog this week that the Foley scandal wasn’t about pedophilia or homosexuality.”[I]t’s fundamentally about the closet,” he wrote. “The closet is so psychologically destructive it often produces pathological behavior. When you compartmentalize your life, you sometimes act out in one compartment in ways that you would never condone in another one. Think Clinton-Lewinsky, in a heterosexual context. But closeted gay men are particularly vulnerable to this kind of thing. Your psyche is so split by decades of lies and deceptions and euphemisms that integrity and mental health suffer. No one should excuse Foley’s creepy interactions; they are inexcusable, as is the alleged cover-up. … But there’s a reason gay men in homophobic institutions behave in self-destructive ways.”

Paul is plugged into his alcove somewhere waiting for a download. Communications from on high are probably a little muddled just now!

Poor Hank and Heckler. I TRIED to tell them Drudge would leave them twisting in the wind. But hey, I’m just a liberal trying to look out for others. I don’t have a website or talent on loan from God. So they would never listen to me.

You boys make sure to ice those glutial bruises!

    Ben

I’m no psych expert. But I have always had the opinion that folks living such a double, hidden, and to all their peers “bad” lifestyle might suffer terrible mental pressure and anguish.

And get this. NOW the right wing shills are trying to make this into Democrat bashing of gays! Hannity is shocked, shocked to the point of breathless that the Dems would SO BETRAY a “key constituency’ to get back their political power! The SHAME of it! SHeesh.

J R – I had commented something simialr before – it was interesting to see that said by a professional. It would be interesting to hear from someone who IS gay about the effects of living such a self-loathing existence.
