Cartoon clearance!

Part of my daily routine as I slog through the process of cartoon manufacturing is to draw up a few “roughs” of potential ideas. I show these to some of my co-workers to gauge their reactions. If there’s a cartoon in the stack that they don’t furrow their brows inquisitively at, that they don’t scratch their heads and say “Huh???” about, I take it as encouragement and go back to the drawing board to finalize it in pen and ink. Sometimes I may even like the rejects better than the one I settle on. And since I’m not contributing nearly as much to this blog as everyone else, I’ve decided to hoist these toon rejects on you, dear bloggers, every now and then. It gets me off the hook a bit for my blog-slacking ways, and gives me the opportunity to test out the ideas on you, perhaps the toughest, most irascible bunch of skeet-shooter commentators since Opinion Line. So here are a few roughed-out cartoons.
Fire at will.

Could I make a suggetion for a cartoon? How about a bunch of lemmings going over a cliff – with a caption “Stay the Course”!

    Flouride in cigarettes? Brilliant!

Except the anti-flouride crowd would say that adding flouride would make cigarettes unnecessarily dangerous …

“Eminent domain” is a good current topic for a cartoon. I think the automobile in your cartoon should be labeled “pro-eminent domain bureaucrats and hired guns.” And show private businesses and residences being bulldozed by that car being driven out of control. In other words, make the meaning jump out at the cartoon viewer.

Eminent Domain one is a keeper.

The illegal immigration one, not so much.

The second-hand smoke and flouride is a keeper as well.

    Mr. Crowson!

Good to have you weigh in here! You do great work.

“Tough and irascible” I’ll take. Comparing us to opinion line? I haven’t had a contribution there since this forum opened.

I like the eminent domain cartoon. The Phelps cartoon would have been excellent….. just before or after the Kansas Constitution was changed with what many here consider the “hate” Amendment. The others I do not like so much. The leaf blower/vacuum one was offensive.

DO share some of your stuff with us here. Maybe even take an idea and give us credit for it now and again? That will draw readers and posters to the blog more than the little ads and editor “blog excerpts” the Eagle currently publishes.

I’m going to try and get up another meetup of bloggers here pretty soon. I hope you will be able to attend. You can draw us!

Richard Crowson: Your comments to your audience were entertaining at the authors/books exposition at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium Saturday morning. Perfect weather. And a good chance to talk with some local writers … including mysterious female EAGLE police reporter, L. Kelly, and some Kansas history and science authors.

    Herr Crowson,

You wouldn’t make a caricature out of me, would you?

Just keep drawing, cuz I have got captions out the wazoo for ya!

    Mr Crowson:

1st place – the flouride/second hand smoke toon

2nd place – the vacuum/leaf blower toon – because it is offensive and true.
