It’s not a huge gain, but GOP gubernatorial candidate Jim Barnett is narrowing the gap with Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, according to a Rasmussen poll last month. Sebelius has a 9 percent edge, leading Barnett by 48 percent to 39 percent. That’s slightly less than the 11 point lead she held in a Rasmussen survey in August. Sebelius’ lead is significantly less than a Survey USA poll last month that had her up by 20 points.

Yet here you are not only reading what they write, but responding to it. Way to stick it to’em. As for the poll, can you actually back up your claim that it polled mostly Democrats? I do think its the first time I’ve ever heard someone say that Republicans were too busy working to respond to a poll. As to the poll itself, when a poll shifts within the margin of error, it is totally meaningless. So I wouldn’t get too excited if I were a Barnett fan. No one knows who he is and he doesn’t have any money to buy ads so that people can find out. And when he does buy ads, instead of introducing himself, he attacks Sebelius with a bunch of distorted, misleading crap about illegal immigration. I’d start concnetrating on 2010 if I were a Republican.

“The Eagle is far on the side of Democrats”
Does that explain the Eagle’s endorsements of Tiahrt and Bush?
Barnett can win if he continues to hammer Sebelius on her failure to bring local, state, and federal law enforcement together to stop illegal immigrantion. Yes it is a Federal responsibility however anyone with a brain can see you cannot solve this problem or effectively enforce immigration law without local, state, and federal agencies cooperating together. 911 may well have been stopped if they had.
I doubt that the immigration issue would have that much traction – I suspect with the packing plants etc there is the perception that these provide the cheap labor that gives us cheap pork and chicken.
I think the election will turn more on pocketbook issues – jobs, taxes, etc. Also education since many people are making the connection between that and economic development. With Sedgwick County Republicans advocating tax increases and spending projects it becomes harder to label Sebelius as “tax/spend liberal”
I think jw is challenging Joe Williams for ‘dumbest person who regularly posts on the WeBlog.’ We gots us a horse race!
Roll Call recently had an article about Survey USA type polls and traditional polls. The conclusion was Survey USA was good to show general trends over time, but not as good for an actual snapshot of the current mindset of the electorate. Both have value, just in different ways. I would never count on a Survey USA poll the last month of an election because too many things change and people react differently to TV ads and new issues.
Having said that, the last time an incumbent candidate always polled ahead 9 – 10 – 12 points but never broke 50, was Governor Bennett. He lost. That should be the story these lazy reporters should write, it’s called research and giving readers a broader perspective, but research is hard sometimes.
CF,
Joe and jw do share the same initials. ;)
Scott – don’t know what you think was distorted. Sebelius did propose and support giving driver licenses to illegals. She was also the push behind giving in-state college tuition to illegals.
She is in favor of rewarding their illegal behavior.
RD- Yes, and they share the same bell!
Barnett just might kick her ass after all. Maybe Kathy’s rethinking her immigrant policies.
“layoffs are looming?”
heheheheh
might I suggest values boy as the first layoff?
hee hee hee hee hee hee
I mean, wouldnt it be nice to go back to JOURNALISM instead of jesusism?
CF, what makes ya’ think that jw isn’t joe williams?and…..GOOD MORNIN’, KFG!!
Good morning Tracy.
How’s yer dad?
I hope he’s better, your workload is decreasing, and the wind is always at your back. Or some such.
hehehe. Mixing metaphors…..
I love your “America held hostage” notes.
How many days has it been since, as Cynthia McKinney put it, we had the “coup d’etat” of the United States?
2083 is my best count since IT was sworn in.Dad is doing much better, will still be a while before we can get him back into his wheelchair, thanks for asking.Workload is worse.Record number of engineering corrections Tuesday. I’m worn out, and it’s takin’ it’s toll.1/2 day vacation for me this afternoon, so no new engineering mistakes will be allowed after 11:00 HA!!Ya’ know I’ll just be a half day behind tommorrow. Damn.
hmmm … interesting point. Any incumbent at less that 50 can be in trouble. Esepcially when she is of the minority party.
You are probably right Ben. Kansans do not understand the changes that the flood of illegals will do to their communities if allowed to continue unabated. I lived in the San Fernando valley for twenty years and witnessed the destruction of whole neighborhoods by the influx illegal aliens which fueled the gang population to out of control levels. Most of the illegals are fine people, I had many friends and went to their social events many times. The overwhelming numbers keep many from integrating and joining the middle class in a generation or two which provides gangs with a river of youths to fuel gang activities. These are simply facts I have witnessed. Kansas will never have the same problem compared to California, but we should all learn from each others mistakes so we can avoid gang violence and associated problems illegal immigration causes in the future.
jw – back when I lived in East LA I found that most of the gang problems came from “born here” people.
In defense of Joe Williams: at least he doesn’t post bigoted statements like those one regularly finds in the Washington Times (Reagan’s favorite DC paper).
Steven – at least the Wash Times might be waking up. They called for Hastert’s resignation.
Ben,You have to wonder how Hastert resgining benefits the Moon family in this case? Maybe they hope to install a far-right idealogue, perhaps?
Steven – interesting question. Would that explain Michael Reagan and Neal Boortz as well?
I have to say that as a former resident of Hastert’s district and supporter in his freshman campaign to replace Grotberg I am disappointed.
Could be, Ben.
Did you see Hank Price is wanting to bet that the Repubs will keep majorities in both the U.S. Senate and House AND a Repub will be elected in Foley’s district? This is on yesterday’s Foley thread. I only hope he has his wife’s permission to blow her money like that. I am pretty sure my wife wouldn’t indulge quite that much.
I encouraged Mr Price to make it the “wing-nut quadfecta” by adding the condition that Katherine Harris will win the Florida Senate seat, too.
I agreed with you – jw.I will most likely vote for Barnett, Sebelius has had her chance at fixing the problems of illegal immigration; she could be doing more on a state level.Since the Vietnam War, I have understood how immigrates carry their political beliefs and lifestyle into another country even after decades in a different civilization. The failure of a country is a measurement by what its people allow not by its government system, which is the reason we have a constitution and a bill of rights.By the people, for the people, we the people it is the words that the founding fathers used.Don’t get me wrong but there is difference between illegal and legal immigration, also a different state of union of our nation between today and two hundred years ago. What are most not agreeable with people are the criminal elements behind all this, the negligence of the government system to intergrade of our forms of governments from both side of the border is at fault, causing an unraveling of a union of nations. The ones that are most hurt by all this is the common people.
If I spent about $1,000,000 on TV ads and have not moved anywhere in the polls, I would be worried. It can only be two things: 1)immigration, 2) a credibility gap.
Hmmm–
People who are such cowards that they don’t use the same name twice don’t really have much credibility either.
I’ll bet you 50 dollars that Sebelius wins in November.
CapnAmerica:
Not sure where you are going with the name thing, I have posted twice today using the same name.
Why are you afraid of a simple observation? Did it hurt? Are you going to lose sleep? If I were you I would give the $50 to Kathleen unless you think that it’s a lost cause. Maybe that $50 will move the polls to finally break 50%. Don’t give up now if you believe in something, after all you are CapnAmerica!
hmm …
A similar observation I have made locally with municipal elections is that if an incumbent is sub-50 in the primary he/she loses in the final. The reason: the ‘not’ vote coalesces around one opponent. Note Elma Broadfoot’s defeat after she handily outdistanced everyone in the primary.
Let the record show that name-changing troll “Hmm” refuses to take a bet on his candidate.
All mouth and no money, all blow and no show, all talk and no walk.
Yup, typical right-winger.
If the republicans could have fielded a credible candidate, i.e. one with out the wingnut taint, complete with flip flops to pander to the kansas taliban,
and if the republicans had put someone on the ticket as lite gov who wasnt as corrupt, hypocritical, and far right wingnut as susan “I own bingo parlors but you cant vote on casinos” wagle,
and if the legislature had shown real leadership and accomplished a few things,
I think kathleen would be toast.
She didnt win this one. You lost it.
Remains to be seen. If they keep hammering on the immigration issue, Barnett could pull even.
I think Sebelius’ biggest weakness is also in some ways her strength. In many ways she is “Republican light”. Thus she can get votes from registered Republicans who do not like the extreme Right that has taken so much of their Party. On the other hand, she is vulnerable to what happened to Gore in 2000 – not holding on to the votes on the “left”. Fortunately for her there is no Ralph Nader on the ballot.
Sebelius did NOT receive an endorsement from the KS Sierra Club – as has been noted here she has not shown a lot of leadership in a number of areas.
In a state with about 50% registered Republicans and about 30% Democrats (estimates) she cannot afford to lose any votes.
Well, the more politically correct amongst us wont agree, but the gay community is not too fond of governor non-leadership either. However, given a choice between less than chatty kathy and susan wagle….
who do YOU think we will support?
Or maybe most of us will just sit this one out. After all, Sebelius broke EVERY promise she ever made to the gay community.
Hee hee hee hee.
That ought to win her even MORE republican votes in ks.
And no endorsement from the Sierra Club?
With her STELLAR record on water policy that has water going to the highest political bidders? To the biggest campaign donors?
Say it isnt so……
hehehehehehehe
Like I said, governor leadership is vulnerable in a number of areas.
Too bad the r’s in kansas did the waltz with the taliban instead of focusing on winning.
Once again. She isnt winning it, YOU REPUBLICANS ARE LOSING IT.
Here is a can of freshly salted wingnuts.
You chose ‘em. You choke on ‘em.
fsfg is right. This election will not be won, it will be lost. The reasons: For a Republican to not win he must be awfully bad. Against such a bad Republican candidate the Democratic alternative would have to blow it to lose.
So if Barndoor wins, there’s gonna’ be a whole bunch of job opportunities in Kansas.Yipeee!!!!
Shoveling shit in the huge feedlots, working on the “kill line” at the packing plants, hauling hay, roofing houses in 100 degree weather, cleaning motel rooms, operating picks and shovels on highway constuction, milking hundreds of cows twice a day, cleaning the guts out of chickens, etc.
Wow, we want those jobs. What does shoveling shit and shooting pigs in the head pay nowadays? I wanna be sure to get my kids in line for these superior careers that these illegals are keeping us out of.
Tracy
I don’t think Barnett want’s those people doing those jobs to go home, I think that he just wants them documented. Is there a problem with that?
Tracy
Every one of those jobs you mention can be done by Kansans. Ship the illegals home and those jobs will pay a wage that Kansans will work for.
If Barnett seriously came out against illegal immigrants I might consider voting for him.
Right on, JR. It is time to stop making excuses for the corporations to continue to drive wages and benefits down. The illegals are a convenient avenue for them to use, and it needs to stop.
No, Heck. No problem.I want that too.Still not going to vote for Barndoor.JR, yes Kansans CAN do those jobs.Who do you suggest?Convicts?
Tracy, no matter how you try to denigrate those jobs, the truth is that Kansas people used to do them and supported their families doing them. Whether you want your kids doing them or whether you think they are a pleasant vocation is irrelevant.
The construction trade used to be a viable career avenue, and it no longer is for most, because the companies can hire illegals for pennies on the dollar.
And the construction trade used to have experienced workers who knew what they were doing. Nowadays we are taking chances with the safety of the buildings and roads that are being built.
Quality does not come cheap.
Sebelius is an anti-White, anti-gun, corrupt, pro-wetback traitor. God help me, but I hate that BITCH!!
Viva La Raza Blanco!!
