Add teachers to Cosby’s list

Bill Cosby isn’t backing off his criticism of some African-American parents. At a forum last weekend in Los Angeles, he said that some parents aren’t involved enough in their children’s education and don’t know what their children are doing, Associated Press reported. "We’ve got parents who won’t check the bedrooms of their children to see if there’s a gun," he said.
Cosby also chided teachers for not doing enough to help kids, especially when they aren’t able to offer clear explanation about why courses such as English and algebra are important.
"If you teach English and you can’t answer this child, then you’re in trouble, and we’ve been in trouble," Cosby said.

Interesting link. When a white-dominated public education system sends starting teachers who have no experience, and banishes incompetent veteran “teachers” who should be fired to minority-predominant schools, the system is CREATING FAILURE for minority students.

I think his message is quite universal. I think if the children don’t realize the importance of the basic skills, they’re not going to take it seriously. Worse still, they’re going to perpetuate the prejudice against nerdiness to their children.

Bill is dead nuts on target. There is no better time than now – this applies to anyone. Now is when you can start a new direction. Now is when you can stop losing and start winning. It sounds cliche but it is true.Where is Oprah on this? She and Bill could team up and get some shit started in the black culture.

Heartlander – you are right on target. The sad part about this is the minority community leaders are very well aware of this but they ignore it. They allow others to dictate what issues will be considered important.

They would rather spend a great deal of time getting headlines about racial profiling then telling parents in their community to get involved with their children. The work with the parents does not get their name in the press.

They would rather ignore the fact that they get the inferior teachers because they get better headlines saying that taxes for their community should be raised so that education can have more money.

They would rather ignore the busing of their children because it does not get headlines but they will tell you how they need more help from the community. The help they ask for is welfare.

It is good to see a high profile individual like Bill Cosby stand up and say it, like it is. Unfortunately he will be considered not black enough because he is asking people to stand up on their own two feet and take responsibility for their actions. He is asking them to be accountable to themselves as well as their community.

Bill Cosby is truly a stand up guy.

I remember asking my algebra teacher why I needed it. She answered me without missing a beat. (I can’t remember what her reply was) I was in contact with her a few months ago and told her I finally found a reason I needed to learn algebra — so I could help my kids with their math.Mr. Cosby’s words are true for any parent regardless of race/color/creed. Know what’s going on with your kids and teach them right from wrong. Nobody’s gonna just give you a hand up to better yourself. If you accept handouts then you’ll just stay in the same situation as you are in.

We appear to be missing something here. Where are the apologists, claiming that the underperformers are simply ‘victims’ and that it is up to US to bail them out?

Where are the cries for more “social programs” for the poor who refuse to help themselves?

Capn…you are being called to action. After all…a social injustice is being perpetrated here, asking people to DO SOMETHING for themselves!

One only has to look beyond their nose to find uses for Algebra.

How about the Nurse or Doctor figuring your dosage for the medicine added to your IV drip.

    or

The fireman figuring out what to plot on grid map how far a chemical spill and its related hazards will affect an accident.

    or

How a traffic investigations cop figures out the speed of a car from skid marks.

How a carpenter figures out amount of material needed an irregularly shape project.

    or

    etc. etc.

I remember asking the question why, and JM is right, it doesn’t take long out in the real world to find you do need to know these things.

Ask them what they want to be when they grow up, and you’ll find a reason for those math problems. Shoot, just for projects around the house too.

Herr Santiago returns! What do you mean by “most negroes?” Do you mean those people who were born without a silver spoon in their mouths, who grew up in underprivileged neighborhoods where computers are outdated 1980s Commodores and classrooms are held in bathrooms and janitor closets because the BOE doesn’t give a shit about funding ghetto schools or paying ghetto schoolteachers a salary they could live on? Do you mean those negroes who lack the “moral and intellectual capacity” who are currently my colleagues at Washburn Law, my friends at Columbia University studying medicine, or my neighbors attending Harvard Business School all of which grew up in the South Bronx or Newark NJ? You don’t get out much do you Ian?

Affirmative action is a wonderful thing, ain’t it. More than 70% of blacks and non-White latinos would not even be in college without affirmative action handouts.

Ian,First you complain that blacks are incapable of making something of themselves, now you’re complaining about them getting into college? You make no sense Ian, as usual.I too think affirmative action is discriminatory, it is an unmeritorious system which should be done away with. But since it’s “discriminatory” why do you have a problem with it? Discrimination is your middle name.
