A useful quote to usurp Joe and Ian – brothers in arms:
“The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life.”
Jane Addams (U.S. social worker, 1860-1935)
Why do I believe John McCain will ask Barack Obama to be his Vice President choice.
He would be the oldest person as President and he’s not conservative would need Obama who is brand new to politics. He’s not a long time Dem.
Weird combination but America deserves it to stop the obstruction in Congress that his hindering Washington.
I don’t believe it, but things seem weird for the 2008 election. Obama would be the leader of Congress without a long voting record to sway his vote choices when political gridlock happens.
Dems don’t want Hillary to win the nomination. Repubs have nobody especially if some try to prop up Guilani.
McCain’s old and if he gets sick in office, there is the young Obama to take over.
Some want Obama to run on his own, but he’s not ready yet for the big chair. Its not likely the Dem party would be good for him long term. Just because the party has no backbone in their beliefs on critical votes.
2012 we should be beyond the Rebup and Dem theology split, its beyond time people get over their seperate beliefs. Neither party is fixing America or serving the people.
Dems shouldn’t be weak to vote their principals, but they are. Repubs control every branch of government exactly what everyone feared would happen, did happen. Rubber stamp congress of failed policies. Criminals backing the Repub machine are being thrown out of office fast as they can be found. The political machine was corrupt putting Bush into office.
No one should ever forget Tom Delay and the way his cabal screwed government, stole from citizens, political corruption at the highest levels.
We shouldn’t have vote fraud but its happening to keep people in power. Lies are told to get people voting a certain way. It’s not hard to do.
I’m from Illinois and Obama will not run for any office until he has been in the Senate for a few years.
But he would be a refreshing change from our stalmate current crop of lip-service cronies.
Actually Mrage! Don’t discount Rudy running in 08. While McCain is getting a lot of attention now, it has been difficult for any Senator to be elected President, although they try pretty much every election.
Most people like candidates outside of Washington when it comes to the presidency, that is why Governors has been elected for the past 30 years. Rudy is considered an outsider in Washington circles, plus his reputation of cleaning up New York, how he dealt with 9/11, and being a moderate Republican, he stands a great chance.
The only thing against him and even McCain for the matter is winning the primaries.
Good points Joe. To win the primaries (both parties) one needs to be a “party purist” and McCain does not fit that description. He has made to many enemies inside his party.
Ironically, the same things that might make a candidate particularly strong on November weaken him/her in the primary season.
That said, a McCain/Obama ticket would be most intriguing.
On the sad state of journalism and politics today.

Assuming the question happened as described it was definitely out of line. Having never heard of the reporter I have to wonder whether she was just a ‘fluff’ type.
I have been known to ask people about their blood-lines and geneology. It’s kind of one of those curiousity things – particularly where names come from (mine is Scotch-Irish but probably further back in France)
Which democrat would I vote for?
McCain or the other guy?
Sigh, I hope Republicans see McCain for what he is come primary time.
The Israeli Mossad has been active in Iraq bombing both-sides in an effort to keep the violence on the rise in order to quell suggestions for a withdrawal of our troops.
We are the cause of Iraqis violence as we are the invading force, but the Israeli Mossad is directed to make it appear as a civil dispute of Iraqis against Iraqis with the Propaganda being put out that the US is not the problem.
Here is some of the propaganda which is set-up to be be countered as being only “conspiracy theories.”
Here it is:
U.S. general: Attacks against GIs rising in IraqIncrease follows call by al-Qaida in Iraq’s leader to target American troops
Updated: 1 hour, 30 minutes agoBAGHDAD, Iraq – Attacks against U.S. troops have increased following a call earlier this month from al-Qaida in Iraq’s leader to target American forces, the top U.S. military spokesman said Wednesday.
Meantime, an Iraqi police headquarters in Baghdad was hit by a suicide truck bomb, killing at least seven people in a deadly 24-hour period that saw more than 45 killings throughout Iraq, authorities said.
Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell also said that Iraqi and American troops were expecting violence to increase further during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which begins next week

Ed- RE: “The Israeli Mossad has been active in Iraq bombing both-sides in an effort to keep the violence on the rise in order to quell suggestions for a withdrawal of our troops.”
Ed- where did this comne from, and I guess why hasn’t it been seen before? I try to stay informed from many different sources, and this is news to me. ??
Ed – while I do stronly suspect that Mossad was behind the bombing that killed hariri is Lebanon I doubt they are behind the violence in Baghdad. The M.O isn’t consistent.
Ed
I’ve told you at least twice to keep those windows open when you’re cooking meth.
Heckler,
Regarding George Allen: cry me a river. He who lives by the right-wing racist political sword dies by it. And regarding Powerline, the pig only squeals when it’s been stuck.
I’ve heard tell about the last-second attack ad Tiahrt used in his first campaign against Glickman, the notorious “Vote for Tiahrt: he’s one of us” (meaning Christian rather than Jewish) dig. Any problems with that, Heckler?
But Guiliani has a problem with his morals, doesn’t he? Wasn’t he the one that was carrying on with his mistress, then dumped his wife and married the mistress?
If Republicans lamblast Bill Clinton for having an affair, then the same lamblasting should be done to Rudy Guiliani.
John McCain has not towed the party line so people loyal Repubicans won’t even consider voting for him? That is total hogwash.
Many democrats crossed party lines to vote for Ronald Reagan didn’t they?
John McCain is not my first choice but I would rather see him there than another stay the course stubborn Republican.
suza, yes I agree. If it has to be a repugnican,Johnny would do as well as any.
suza-I too agree. At least when you look McCain in the eyes, you don’t see the inside of the back of his head, as with Bush!
Just in case you are having a rough day, here is a stress management technique recommended in all the latest psychological journals.
1. Picture yourself lying on your belly on a warm rock that hangs out over a crystal clear stream.2. Picture yourself with both your hands dangling in the cool running water.3. Birds are sweetly singing in the cool mountain air.4. No one knows your secret place.5. You are in total seclusion from that hectic place called the world.6. The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity.
7. The water is so crystal clear that you can easily make out the face of the person you are holding underwater.
See, it really does work. You’re smiling already.
McCain’s problem is his age by the time 2008 comes around. He’ll be 72He needs a young Vice President choice.
Being a Senator won’t harm him, his Vietnam war is modern, where Bob Dole’s war WW1 was ancient. McCain interests in Congress are mainstream enough.
McCain won’t have swift boaters, only bashers from conservatives he doesn’t actually like. Its too bad he’s smoothing things with Jerry Falwell. A nut is a nut, doesn’t matter the relegious part. Shouldn’t have do that trying to be President.
I have no evidence except there is some conversation between him and Obama.
Obama will be harmed being too long in the Senate. The Dem party is weak with Harry Reid as leader. Obama has no seniority there to sway a committee.
If Vice President, he would leap over the Senate and become the leader without a long voting record to mess with how he’ll choose when gridlock happens.
It would be good for America, ending the political schism. People can be moderate with both party beliefs.
McCain/Guiliani….ego’s clash. Guiliani can’t win the Presidentcy on his own, because of things unfinished in New York. 9/11 cleanup has health issues and things still not fixed.
Guilani became a shill for corporate stock fraud companies, at the SEC saying hey that accounting isn’t fraud, but it was. Real people lost investments from 401K plans, no ability to understand how fraud works on the stock market.
If anyone is slick, that’s Guilani and not for good intentions. His personal life will make headlines.
I don’t think its possible now, to have a mistress problem before becoming President.
Conservatives might try to demand Guiliani as VP to McCain.
To be different and McCain is, why not really tweak politics by choosing Obama. He may not do it and we’ll all be stuck with same crap like always in 2008, fractured government, misunderstandings politically and the wrong process that allow corrupt politicans to happen. No one party government ever again.
Those who want Obama to be President by 2012, he’ll have more experience as Vice President to get there.
Between age 72 and 76, McCain is going to have some health scares. We’ll still have trouble in 2008, Iraq and Afghanistan. So a war tested President is better than any other in 2008.
Look at the guys who were never in war making decesions. This time period demands some war understanding from the White House. How to treat prisoner important in war. How to negiotate properly with enemy countries.
Colin Powell should come back and do Rumsfeld’s job.
McCain could keep Condi, that’s great for girls in America, she has that job. Without Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney influence her choices should be better in the world.
If Africa is ever going to have importance at the White House, Obama’s father was from Kenya. He recently went and visited his grandparents. He’s world known already.
Africa has serious problems like Darfur and the continuing horror show of humanity suffering. Its a country with incredible resources but Millions are forced into deserts. Death by disease when it shouldn’t be happening. Horrible tryants like Saddam over people. United States of Africa, its not.
Mrage – what political party? Reform?
How a McCain/Obama ticket would work I have no idea. They have to do it early on, forget trying to win nominations, just run on their joined ticket in the general election. They both could go to the conventions and demand to give speech’s. Both be there, while Obama gives his for Dems, and McCain does one for Repubs. Both on stage. I truly wonder how that would play. I think most people would cheer it.
It has to be early to bust the nomination process for both parties. Or both could win nominmations for President, Obama over Hillary? McCain over Guiliani. Then they merge.
Why fight to win in the party nomination, just win the general election with their unique partnership.
Bust the rules of the nomination process, what’s the harm? A better government with diverse representation in the White House.
McCain/Obama could hire from both parties to help.
Mechanism is very impoertant mrage. Remember, we do NOT vote for President/VP we vote for ELECTORS. They MUST have an established party to function in such a system.
Tracy,
I use a mental ballbat for those stressful times. Takes less time. *grin*
Um, mrage? Dole served in WW1? Was that a previous life experience? He was born in 1923.
Stupid White women will seemingly never learn. I have no sympathy for these skanks, at all! Come on folks, these animals enrich us, so let’s CELEBRATE DIVERSITY!
ALBUQUERQUE — An Albuquerque woman was viciously beaten until she was unconscious and then had her genitalia mutilated with a machete. She is only talking now because the man accused of carrying out the attack is in jail. The attack Tammy endured was so brutal she was clinically dead for two minutes. She says the man who put her in the hospital never showed any signs of violence. The man is Juan Fuentes, a 46 year old Cuban national that Tammy knew for more than a year and dated for less than a month.Tammy said Fuentes was a perfect gentleman until the night of august 25th.
“He took a machete handle to my head, a gun handle. I was covered when I got to the hospital with lacerations in private areas,” said Tammy. Those lacerations were caused by the machete and a knife. Her one month old daughter was there as her mother was attacked.
“She was under me when I was getting hit by the butt end of the machete,” said Tammy.Tammy thinks she blacked out for about 45 minutes. She is not certain how she got to the hospital.Tammy was beaten so badly she was nearly unrecognizable. Almost a month later she’s still recovering. She can’t hear out of my right ear and is having trouble seeing out of her left eye. Many of her injuries are permanent. She has internal damage.Tammy says as she waited for police to catch Fuentes he would stalk her. He stood outside her window smoking and would ring the doorbell early in the morning.Fuentes was arrested Friday night near Zuni and Alvarado
Tammy did not know Fuentes had a long criminal history when she met him.He is now charged with rape, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, child abuse, and false imprisonment.
Fuentes is also charged for allegedly shooting a man named Sean Levine on Thursday outside a home on Hermosa in southeast Albuquerque.
Police told News 13 Saturday night that the shooting was connected to the attack on Tammy, but told News 13 she does not know Levine.
(NOTE – News 13 chose not to release Tammy’s last name.)http://www.krqe.com/expanded.asp?RECORD_KEY%5BNews%5D=ID&ID%5BNews%5D=17183
Viva La Revolucion Blanco!!
Quote of the Day:
“Every hope of the existence of church and state, and of civilization itself, hangs upon our arduous effort to defeat the doctrine of Negro suffrage… The radical social theory [that asserts] all men are born free and equal [is an] attack upon God’s Word.” ~ Robert L. Dabney, the greatest theologian in American history
Viva La Raza Blanco!!
At this point, I’m willing to vote for anyone I think is going to take a step back and assess things rather than continue on this wild ride. I would rather have a “weak on foreign policy” president than a “screws up everything he gets his hands on” president. Sometimes, accomplishing nothing is safer than accomplishing anything.
Dole’s war began in 1942, after WW1 okay, my fault, his try for President in the 90’s was more ancient than McCain in Vietnam and he’s now running for Prez.
McCain won’t have Dole slamming him like he did to Kerry.
I don’t know how its going to work, jumping ticket, busting the nomination process but McCain seems to be a one termer President necessary in 2008 because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has understanding of the Geneva Convention.
I hope McCain doesn’t believe in tax cuts while war is raging. He fixes that problem.
He could easily choose a GOP V.P. from Governors George Pataki, George Allen, Jeb Bush or the former New York Mayor Guiliani.
The one party rule aspirations of Dems and Repubs has to be busted.
Cross party politicans, a moderate from both political views not tied down in party line beliefs.
Congress should never vote along party lines. Its harming necessary legislation. Congress changing a few seats, big deal.
The White House needs diverse representation, the ability to hire from both parties.
McCain has the war understanding. Obama has youth without a political record, but he’s already known on the world stage.
Nobody that could be GOP VP has that image of the future Obama creates.
So in my estimation, no matter how its supposed to happen busting the two party nomination process, McCain would be smart to pick Obama being his V.P.
As voters don’t we demand it? Money laundering happens easier in the one party system.
Cross party can work, probably needs to in the White House for our future benefit as a country. How the White House presents itself to the World. A combination of politicans from both parties on staff means more of America believes in what their doing.
Anybody who believes in McCain forgets the lessons of history.Remember the savings and loan scandal? The man is nothing but a hypocrite.Allen may make an ass of himself, but at least he’s honest about it.I wish I knew what it was about conservative Republicann senators… the minute I meet one I can trust, they say something stupid. At this rate, I’d better hold my breath with Kay Hutchenson.
Ben,From physics update:
“STRONGER HURRICANES LINKED TO CLIMATE CHANGE. A new study ofclimate data suggests that global warming is causing the AtlanticOcean to generate deadlier hurricanes. Hurricanes have becomestronger in recent decades, in apparent correlation with the raisein atmospheric temperatures. Indeed James Elsner of Florida StateUniversity in Tallahassee reports in Geophysical Research Lettersthat there is in fact a clear cause-and-effect link. Less than threeweeks after Hurricane Katrina, a study published in Science showedthat, while the number of tropical cyclones had not increasedbetween 1970 and 2004, their strength had surged: Category-4 or -5hurricanes where more than 50 percent more frequent in the secondhalf of that period than in the first (Webster et al., Science,16September 2005,http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/309/5742/1844).The same period saw a rise in global atmospheric temperatures–widely attributed to the accumulation of greenhouse gases such asCO2–and in sea-surface temperatures in the Atlantic, wherehurricanes are born. Some climatologists believe that global(atmospheric) warming is causing the oceans’ temperatures to rise, and that warmer sea surfaces can in turn add to a hurricane’sstrength. But others attributed nature’s increased wrath to along-term cyclic fluctuation in sea temperatures called the AtlanticMultidecadal Oscillation. Opinions also varied on whether a warmeratmosphere can significantly make the oceans warmer, and on theextent to which sea temperatures contribute to hurricane strength.Elsner (jelsner@garnet.acns.fsu.edu, 850-644-8374) used an elaboratestatistical method (first devised by economics Nobel Prize winnerClive Granger) to answer the first of those two questions. Heexamined spikes in global atmospheric temperature (using satelliteand ground-based data collected by the Intergovernmental Panel onClimate Change) and compared them to seasonal changes in averagesea-surface temperatures for the entire northern-hemisphere part ofthe Atlantic (based on National Atmospheric and OceanicAdministration data). His analysis showed that the spikes inatmospheric temperature mostly tended to come right beforehurricane-season spikes in oceanic temperature, suggesting that thefirst were causing the second. Global warming could indeed becausing stronger hurricanes. (Geophysical Research Letters, 23August)”
I am, by nature, a sceptic. I am that way because too often science has been trumped by politics, junk, or just plain stupidity (cold fusion, anyone?). I do, however, keep up on ALL sides of a scientific argument, keeping the aforementioned examples in mind. I am being pulled more in the direction of mans’ causing at least part of global warming. I don’t call that a start, but simply the evolution of the knowledge gained and studied. It is still ongoing.
Skepticism is GOOD JM
I have never found you stodgy.
During a 14-month Senate ethics investigation that ended with his exoneration, John McCain and four other senators stood accused of exerting improper influence by meeting with federal bank regulators on behalf of Charles Keating, who had contributed $1.5 million to the political causes and campaigns of the senators, including $112,000 to McCain.
Charles Keating, an Arizona businessman whose failed thrift was a $2 billion debacle for taxpayers, were dominating the news in his home state.
Senator McCain had taken money in Keating-related campaign donations, trips aboard Keating’s corporate jet and family vacations at the executive’s Bahamas hideaway
—-
Sound’s typical for Republicans, Abramoff trips and gifts today, money laundering and illegal campaign donations for Senators. ENRON jets yesterday, didn’t Ken Lay influence Bush and Cheney more than any other politician.
I didn’t believe in McCain for President on Monday. Wasn’t thinking about the election of 2008.
Then suddenly controversy over Bush torture desires and McCain arguing against it, he’s fighting a truth about war. Lets not torture so badly, other countries will return those favors with American soldiers captured. He’s a war veteran unlike Bush and Cheney.
For one term McCain is a timely politician, even though older, for wars still going on in 2008, Iraq and Afghanistan.
I trust none of the GOP VP choices. He could be negatively influenced by conservatives, those who forced him toward Jerry Falwell.
He’s the perfect Republican to bust the nomination process, take Obama as his V.P. Cross up the party affliations in the White House, choose best cabinet choices regardless of party. Appoint from both parties.
It’s harming our country the schism of politics along party lines. The obstruction in Congress with needed legislation.
I take who’s qualified at the moment, because any Senator with a lengthy political history has skeletons. Obama is brand new to politics and lets not ruin him by voting party line constantly for years in the Senate. Harry Reid stinks as Dem leader. Its not likely Dems will take the Senate.
It would be weird and likely wonderful a different political combination. Wish I had influence over them both to do it.
Its likely we’ll be stuck with the same party line crap in 2008. The world wonders why we can’t fix ourselves. Wonder why people don’t vote.
Tomorrow I’ll likely not talk about the election of 2008 anymore.
