Name that religious extremist

As part of an editorial calling for tighter limits on funeral protests, the Daily Union in Junction City asked readers to pick which quote goes with which source: Al-Qaida’s Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, or Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church leader Fred Phelps.
It’s harder than you’d think. Here are the quotes:
A) “Death is better than living on this earth with the unbelievers among us, making a mockery of our religion.”
B) “Stay tuned — it won’t be long and you will have so many dead bodies . . . that you won’t be able to bury them.”
C) “Regardless of how the world has changed after (Sept. 11), ‘Death to America’ will remain our reverberating and powerful slogan: Death to America.”
D) “The world and the United States of America . . . in particular, have deeply corrupted themselves and incurred the wrath of God.”
E) “Your doomed destiny will be annihilation, misfortune and abjectness.”
F) “God hates the U.S.A. and America is doomed.”
G) “The Bush presidency was a bunch of cocky fools. . . . They threw themselves, their people and their nation into a sea of fire from which they are uselessly trying to secure themselves.”
Answers: A) Bin Laden, B) Phelps, C) Nasrallah, D) Phelps, E) Ahmadinejad, F) Phelps, G) Zawahiri.

These are fun! But using Google, we can cheat! ;)

Here is another fun guess who said it: Al Gore or the Unibomber!

Try this——————————-Aug, 2000For eight years, Clinton and Gore have extended our military commitments while depleting our military power. Rarely has so much been demanded of our armed forces, and so little given to them in return. George W. Bush and I are going to change that, too. I have seen our military at its finest, with the best equipment, the best training, and the best leadership. I’m proud of them. I have had the responsibility for their well-being. And I can promise them now, help is on the way. Soon, our men and women in uniform will once again have a commander in chief they can respect, one who understands their mission and restores their morale.http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2000/08/02/politics/main221310.shtml

I only got 55% right (guess I’m cutting W. too much slack, even now).

BTW, it would be very easy to find quotes from Gore and the Uanbomber that would be distinctively different, being that Ted was anti-tech and Al is a geek (just a thought). I also notice that several sites inaccurately attribute “I invented the Internet” to him, so I would also take the Bush/Hitler side-by-side with a grain of salt.

All these people are saying these things about us. A bunch of insane people…so we say. I wonder if we should listen to the bells?

Have you ever noticed how pretty much all of Phelpses remarks are pretty much the same. Is he so vague that he has to use the same rederick over and over.

Oh wait, this IS Fred we are talking about eh :)

Joe – the difference is that the quotes you listed actually make a certain amount of sense.

If you and I both said “Gee it’s a nice day outside today” does that make us allies?

Despite the fact that I strongly disagree with Phelp’s hateful method of delivery, I agree somewhat with his message regarding America. Americans can’t afford to be so naive about what is going on in this world, and in our country in particular.

I believe in God. You may not.But IF there IS a God, one would HAVE to acknowledge that America has incurred his wrath alongside every other hateful, sinning nation in this world (i.e. everyone of us).

Interestingly, this is the message of the Bible! That we are ALL sinners.

America hasn’t been a “Christian” nation for centuries. In fact, if you look at the old quotes from our forefathers that deal with this subject, you find that they all acknowledge that Christianity has absolutely nothing to do with the establishment of our Constitution or anything else.

I don’t know why it offends Americans to say that! It’s true.

As I see it, there are three “layers” of Christianity in this nation:The Churchians who have hi-jacked the Christian faith for their own purposes, who could not be true Christians, in the sense that they are not actually following what the Lord said. These include those who would “kill” for Jesus, like that horrific Jesus Camp. They have distorted the message of Christ so badly I wonder if they have ever read their Bible.

There are also Christians who are Christians “in name only”. These acknowledge that they “believe” in God, some will say Jesus, but they don’t actually know anything at all about the faith or its tenets. These might include those who go to church to see who is wearing the nicest hat that week. It’s almost faddish…

Then there are Christians who study the Bible and follow Christ’s teachings as best they can – these are those for whom there is no other God to worship but Jehovah, and who sincerely strive to treat others as they want to be treated. These are those for whom the ten commandments are summed up in those two statements. These are those who understand that it is not our place to stand in judgment of others, but to be the light of the Lord, humble servants to mankind, like Jesus – who washed the feet of His apostles to demonstrate this. They are, sadly, few and far between…

Phelps is supposed to be the light of the Lord. Instead, he darkens others’ opinions of Jesus Christ and Christianity in general.

Sadly, the Bible is clear that those who cause others to disbelieve will suffer a greater fate than those who disbelieved. I wonder what this means for Fred Phelps…

CC, I’m more than happy to have lots and lots more of that third type you mentioned. Perhaps they should speak out as you have. I’d certainly welcome it.

Mankind has been sinful ever since he’s walked upon the earth, and the problem is that he has often used his religion to persecute his fellow man. If man was truly created in the image of God, then that doesn’t say much for God.
