And now, here’s CBS newsreader Katie Couric

I’m looking forward to Katie Couric’s debut today as anchor of the “CBS Evening News.” Not because I care about Couric, but because I’m tired of the promotional buildup (which included releasing this photo that was altered to make Couric look thinner). Enough already. Instead of treating TV news anchors as celebrities, we should be like the British and call them what they mostly are: “newsreaders.”

News anchors are nothing much more than newsreaders.

And newspaper editors are nothing much more than stenographers for the money class . . .

    Hey, Phil, a Koch brother wants his shoes shined. “Ol’ man ribber . . . dat ol’ man . . . I’s a-coming Masser William, I’s a-coming.”

Photoshopped pictures of Eagle editors could be interesting.

Katie Couric will undoubtedly make millions and will probably last at CBS for many years to come. She is their type – all fluff and no substance.

As she went to commercial for the first time…the flipping of stories has got to slow down. The first moments all about “serious” news, war in Afganistan, Iraq, interview with Tom Freidman of the New York times, in chairs, and a quick mention of related information back at her desk about 9/11. Workers there in New York with damaged material in the aftermath are years later suffering lung, breathing problems other related injuries. Any blame on Guiliani?

She should stop, pause, and say “in other news” before talking about Bill Ford being replaced.

No one is going to craft a message with war talk and FORD news in the same paragraph.

If she stayed standing and did away the new desk competely it would have been different. She tilts her head too much and that’s probably going to be fixed.

No different, but it seems less “heavy” having an old guy read the telepronter. I’ll be watching ABC news and won’t like it.

I hate Nightline without Ted Koppel.

I watched at Dutch’s tonight. The newscast was well paced, and very visual. I think this will play well from a web point of view, which CBS says they want. The biggest complaint seemed to be from older women, who said they had trouble hearing her.All in all, much better than I expected. Props to Les Moonves.

I like the new stuff, but Katie is just not anchor material. Call me old fashioned, but I like a man to host the evening news. It seemed like I was watching the weekend news tonight. She flew thru the stories and didn’t pause or change tone when switching subjects.

    I’ll be watching ABC.

Isn’t she the one who went to an air force base and asked if they flew M-16s?!? They are making this person a role model for young journalists?

I would have liked to see someone like Charlene Hunter-Galt (sp?) as an anchor. She is a true journalist.

    Laurie,

With enough idiotic gaffes like that she might be President someday.

“People want to put food on their families.”

“Hope is where wings take root.”

The question is, “is our children learning?”

    Uh, Russ.

    You’re old-fashioned.

Bet you like a man in the pulpit too, eh?

Hope you don’t have any daughters . . . that want to make something of themselves that is . . .

“…we should call them as they mostly are: “newsreaders”.”It’s a twinkie thing, Phillip. If I were still strictly a fishhack, I wouldn’t understand, either. There’s a big difference between the Beeb and US television: Union regulations there prevent broadcast talent from writing their own stuff.Ms. Couric has taken Walter Cronkite’s old title of “Managing Editor”. That means that like the guy on the rim, she decides where stuff goes, and has the freedom to edit copy to her own style… which, admittedly, she probably hasn’t done in a while, if ever. She can’t have the title if she doesn’t do the work…union regs, and Katie is card carrying union.

I heard the newscast on the radio tonight. Seemed ok, but a little light and too much of the Today Show stuff inside of it.

Like how she had to go on a personal spill of what to choose as her sign off. And making the news a bit too light with the commentary and opinions. That stuff workes ok for 20/20, Nightline, Today Show and etc. But I’m always used to the evening news of just reporting the news. No opinions or commentary, just the facts of what happen today. That’s all I really like.

I started watching CBS when Scheiffer took over. That guy was great, I don’t know why they thought they needed to replace him. He brought some much-needed credibility back to CBS. Katie, predictably, does not.
