The Eagle editorial department was among those that received this week a pair of “flip-flops” — the cheap white sandals being distributed by the Kansas Democratic Party to highlight apparent position changes by GOP gubernatorial nominee Jim Barnett. The label on the shoe box says: “The official shoe of the Barnett/Wagle campaign ‘06 (one size fits all).”
Barnett has explanations for his changing views on school finance, concealed weapons and other issues. But as Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., learned during the 2004 presidential campaign, a flip-flop label can be difficult to remove.

Paybacks are such a bitch, no?
I have seen big jim and susan wiggle waggle “adjust” their positions to the right during the primary season to pander to that wing of the ksgop.
Now that it looks like that wing of the gop might not be as strong as they thought, I wonder if we will see some “adjustments” (read flipflops) to the left?
Naaawwwww. Not as long as susan “I own bingo parlors but you cant vote on gambling” wagle is on the ticket as the uber social conservative.
Stay tuned for an episode of good cop/bad cop.
Ya think?
Or maybe they’ll just wait for the latest polling data to tell them what positions to take.
heheheh maybe I better start calling the top of the ticket “part time jim” instead….
…tap tap tap tap…
Where ARE the righties today?
Are they ashamed of Paul?
Where is Cindy? Where is Lauren? Where is joblow?
“can the conservatives come out to play today ma’am?”
heheh. She said they’ve been sent to their rooms with no supper for making such a poor showing yesterday.
I shoulda brought an extra sandwich from the bleeding heart liberals….
At least Jim and Susan have records to examine.
Flip-flops would never work for Sebelius as she’s never had a plan or firm position on anything tangible. I’d recommend the Repubs could send out re-labeled tubes of “K-S Jelly” for the ever-slippery Kathy.
..so how is that strategy working for your side roscoe?
hehehehe
Ya know the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
How is that strategy of running wingnuts against KS working for ya?
How is that strategy of trying to blame her for the do-nothing REPUBLICAN legislature working?
Thought so….
…and I DO HOPE you will continue those oh-so-successful strategies.
We are amused, and you can play again in 2010.
KFG- I think he needs to turn the newspaper right side up and try again!
hehehehehe…..too. So sorry…but thanks for being adult and posting for comment.
>>a flip-flop label can be difficult to remove<<
Particularly when your opponent’s buddies at the state’s largest newspaper are helping you spread the word.
JackStraw,
“Particularly when your opponent’s buddies at the state’s largest newspaper are helping you spread the word.”
Are you saying that this is inaccurate?”Barnett has explanations for his changing views on school finance, concealed weapons and other issues.”
And/or that it’s wrong for newpapers to inform citizens?
What does it matter what Barnett does or say? Isn’t he the one that has already stated he will not give up his medical practice while he is governor? So, it seems to me that Susan Wagle is the one you have to watch. She will be the one running the state if this team wins.
Not at all, Lokai. At issue is whether Mr. Brownlee is lending an assist with the ‘informing’ or the ‘labelling’. But it doesn’t at all surprise me that the editorial board of the Beagle-Eacon is all too happy to pass along Democratic press releases as news. It’s what they do.
What is more interesting to me is why Governor Leadership feels the need to go on the attack immediately at the conclusion of the Republican primary. I would have thought a rising Democratic star like herself would have little to worry about. Very curious.
I would like a canidate to tell me what their position is and how they will serve our state. However, all we get is how bad the other one is. Are we to vote for someone or just against someone?
JackStraw,”What is more interesting to me is why Governor Leadership feels the need to go on the attack immediately at the conclusion of the Republican primary.”
Because that’s the way you treat republicans. It’s the only thing they understand.Flip-flops send a very graphic message on a level that even conservatives can understand. At least it’s not mud-slinging or the kind of dirty tricks we can expect from Kansas GOP.
How original…predictable…yawn…lol
That Barnett intends to keep his day job as a Dr. should turn voters away on it’s face.
It also presents something of an ethical conundrum.
If Barnett WERE to be elected, (Yeah right after pigs fly!) what if he is brought a plea for commuting a death sentence? Wouldn’t his oath as a doctor to “do no harm” force him to sign it?
I’m trying to figure out why we want a governor that would be part-time. I would rather have a governor that would be a full-time governor rather than a part-time hobby.
“And/or that it’s wrong for newpapers to inform citizens?”
Well yes it is wrong, cosmos. It gets in the way of the plan. Kansas is supposed to get redder and redder and eventually have only one political party which only represents like minded theocrats. Keep up, would ya?
Steven: “Keep up, would ya?”
I apologize for forgetting about the plan. I keep slipping back to Thomas Jefferson’s idea that we should have informed citizens.
Also, the plan is national, not just for Kansas. Note that much of media is dysfunctional, and there’s Faux, Coulter, Rush…
To represent Sebelius, I suggest an EMPTY CHAIR. Everyone knows what that means — a person who is intellectually absent.
During the school finance debate, Sebelius definitely wasn’t in the middle of the fray. She basically called in timidly from the sidelines.
Kansas has a number of major problems, among them diminishing water sources and pollution of our rivers. Sebelius hasn’t significantly weighed in on either issue.
According to her recent campaign ads, Sebelius has spent a lot of time saving on PAPER CLIPS.
During the time she was Kansas insurance commissioner, I wrote to her about a situation in which my car was hit by a car being driven WRONG WAY on the Texas U-turn at Kellogg and Seneca. Unbelievable! The driver claimed to have car insurance but their insurance company canceled their insurance after the accident but before paying me for damage to my car. Sebelius followed the money trail and sided with the auto insurance company.
As someone who has watched Sebelius’ performance since that time, I suggest the following symbolism for Sebelius: AN EMPTY CHAIR CONTAINING A BOX OF PAPER CLIPS AND A ONE-WAY TICKET BACK TO OHIO.
Speaking of flip-flops…
Bush is against campaign finance reform; then he’s for it.
Bush is against a Homeland Security Department; then he’s for it.
Bush is against a 9/11 commission; then he’s for it.
Bush is against an Iraq WMD investigation; then he’s for it.
Bush is against nation building; then he’s for it.
Bush is against deficits; then he’s for them.
Bush is for free trade; then he’s for tariffs on steel; then he’s against them again.
Bush is against the U.S. taking a role in the Israeli Palestinian conflict; then he pushes for a “road map” and a Palestinian State.
Bush is for states right to decide on gay marriage, then he is for changing the constitution.
Bush first says he’ll provide money for first responders (fire, police, emergency), then he doesn’t.
Bush first says that ‘help is on the way’ to the military … then he cuts benefits
Bush-”The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. Bush-”I don’t know where he is. I have no idea and I really don’t care.
Bush claims to be in favor of the environment and then secretly starts drilling on Padre Island.
Bush talks about helping education and increases mandates while cutting funding.
Bush first says the U.S. won’t negotiate with North Korea. Now he will
Bush goes to Bob Jones University. Then say’s he shouldn’t have.
Bush said he would demand a U.N. Security Council vote on whether to sanction military action against Iraq. Later Bush announced he would not call for a vote
Bush said the “mission accomplished” banner was put up by the sailors. Bush later admits it was his advance team.
Bush was for fingerprinting and photographing Mexicans who enter the US. Bush after meeting with Pres. Fox, he’s against it.
So winky, what is part time jim and gamblin’ money susan’s plan for water?
I seemed to have missed that plank in their platform….
Has anyone else seen the Sebellius Iraq visit TV ad?
I wonder if Kathleen has violated the Rove copyright on political strategies:
1) attack on flip flops;2) use Iraq as a patriotism back-drop.
I wonder if the gov can arrange an Osama endorsement of Jim and Susan…
KSFG – why don’t you call and ask them yourself?
KsFarmGirly: In regard to Jim Barnett and Susan Wagle, I don’t know what their position is on conservation of Kansas water resources and pollution of our rivers … I suspect their position is “Of course, we want to do good.”
Its one thing to want to do good but another to actually lead the snarling wolves in our 165 member state legislature in that direction.
I think the best governors of Kansas come from leadership positions in the state legislature — a situation not offered by James Barnett nor Wagle nor, for that matter, our present Governor, Sebelius.
So, as a moderate Republican but economic conservative, I feel I don’t have a dog in this Governor’s fight.
JWink – you may not like your choices but we all have a dog in this fight. There is the issue of the lesser of two evils. If people take your attitude and decide to not vote then the states gets whatever. It is important for us to hold the candidates accountable and with Sebelius she will be lame duck (except for wanting to be US Senator in 2 years and then we will have elected Parkinson by default) so what do we really get?
