The biggest news out of the state primary was the defeat of two conservative State Board of Education members, giving 6-4 majority control of the board — and the evolution debate — back to moderates.
It’s a big win for sound science and for those who want a more pragmatic BOE agenda.
Among the losers was 5th district conservative Connie Morris, who recently called evolution “a nice bedtime story.” She lost decisively to Sally Cauble in this largely rural Western Kansas district.
Two more conservatives could yet be in trouble: Ken Willard won in the 7th district primary but still faces an excellent candidate, former Rep. and Board of Regents member Jack Wempe, in November. And John Bacon faces Democrat Don Weiss in the 3rd district.
Perhaps the biggest loser was the Intelligent Design network, which poured money and effort into these races. Nationally, Kansas was seen as a foothold for the ID movement, but this race shows that the group, having failed to convince scientists, is also failing to convince voters.

A foothold?
How about the mother of all bunkers, the bastion of creationism, the very citadel of theocracy, the defender of the crusaders and the mommy’s lap to which the wingnuts run when they get their asses handed to them?
A foothold?
DD, as much as it pains me, you might be right. The worm might be turning. If the wingnuts are losing ground in kansas…
…the devil must be ice skating on Cedar Bluff!!!
He better hurry though before Hays and Russell drain it while the Kansas Water Office gleefully cheers them on!
now if we could just get people in kansas to care about water as much as they do the flying spagetti monster…
I’m still not giving too much credit to the voters. Not until after November. This particular vote out here in the west was as easy as a.b.c.
Anyone But Connie!
And might I add as a warning for the future of Kansas that Connie beat Sonny four years ago by riding a newly formed wave of anti-hispanic, anti-immigrant sentiment in western kansas.
She ran on a platform that hardly mentioned science or evolution, but she spoke extensively about how it was wrong, WRONG I say, for us to educated the children of illegal immigrants in our public schools. Even if the kids were born on U.S. soil.
THAT was how she weaseled her ass into office four years ago. And after she was elected, the real “wingnuts gone wild” party started. She even thought she was above the law concerning travel vouchers.
She almost single handedly destroyed any good our economic development money and efforts have done over the last 10 years. Nice work.
And all because she was a toxic, wingnut wolf hiding under the sheep’s soft clothing of immigration reform.
Heheh.
What’s hiding under the wool in THIS election?
A loss for wing nuts, a win for science and Kansas.
Hey Jed!
You mentioned something about the proper way to ensure that a wingnut vampire stayed dead? It involved pinning the body down with oak branches? heheh
I have some “pin” oak bbq wood I brought from texas if you need any….
And might it be too much to ask that this would be the LAST TIME we have to look at this total f****** moron picture of her on the WE blog?
This is your brain on drugs….
“How about the mother of all bunkers, the bastion of creationism, the very citadel of theocracy, the defender of the crusaders and the mommy’s lap to which the wingnuts run when they get their asses handed to them?”
Heheh, that oughta be put on a bronze plate and framed. Unfortunately. . .
I wouldn’t get too cocky folks. It only took 4 years for these suckers to regroup and take over, again, last time. “Eternal vigilance” comes to mind. . .
P.S. Anti-immigrant sentiment? I’m still taking in the politics on that one from Ground Zero, so to speak. It’s on the news every night, Operation Jumpstart, the political ads and whatnot. I’ll report on it when I eventually grasp the totality of it all.
Hi Rage! I agree, this small victory might be too good to last, but I intend to enjoy it.
At least for this news cycle!
RAMEN
Just three words from me:”Praise the Lord!”
OK – more than three words…
The $50.00 I sent to the pro-science PAC was the BEST money I have spent this year.
Connie received a lot of out of state money because of her position on NOT educating Hispanic children. (You just have to love the non-bigotry of the religious right, no?)
This is a victory to savor for a LONG TIME…
Connie Morris: An age old fairy tale and a NOT SO GOOD bedtime story.
Maybe we’ll get lucky and see Corkins booted out and somebody qualified in replacement.
I am celebrating this for another reason. When I go out of state, I will have to be less embarrassed about telling people where I am from. Best 50 bucks I have ever spent!
Praise God! Can I hear an “amen” please.
Tracy, at least we’ll see Corkins booted out.
And where oh where is Cindy Duckett this morning?
Here Cindy, here girl. Come on, come here and show your face.
Hereeeee, Cindy, here girl…..
Tracy, NO DOUBT about that. The celebration will just go on and on…
I forgot all about the Cindy prophesy. She had her head up her butt, didn’t she? Nothing new there.
Hehe, as long we’re talking about prophesies, ahem:

Can I get my own radio show now? :)
I guess attendence must have been low last sunday when everyone showed up for their, um, what did Cindy call it? Motivation?
heheheheheheheheh
Rage, “we’re not worthy”.
Any other predictions you might make that could go from your lips to god’s ears?
Rage, did you have a bet with outie? Or hank or anyone else who is silent today?
Geez, where to start. . .
‘Fraid not.
OMG!!!!
The rude pundit is out on the road this week and has a guest blogger today who just NAILS it on the differences between republicans and democrats, with the added bonus of a PERFECT description of people who say “it doesnt matter which party we support”.
http://www.rudepundit.blogspot.com/
I don’t know why anyone would think ksfarmgrrl is bigoted, as has been alleged. She always judges people on their merits alone, without resorting to name-calling or mud-slinging just because they belong to a certain group. Can’t you people see that?
heheheheheheh
Dear SBA,
I whole heartedly agree! She always brings something interesting to the discussion. Seems to have a good sense of humor. She is a little ascerbic at times but only to make a point. Obviously has a good handle on reading people and seeing into their hearts.
I seriously believe that the only people that could possibly have a problem with our hard working, thoughtful contributor from Western Kansas are those that have been stung by the truth in her barbs.
Why, she is kind of like the Ann Coulter of the left!
Hank
That Hankster, he is just the master of back-handed compliments.
Remember this from the past?
“Outlander makes a good point. In this state, Liberals can’t do anything without the help of moderate Republicans.”Posted by: XXX | January 03, 2006 at 08:30 PM
This war for the soul of the Republican party has been very useful. Those moderate R’s are sick of being marginalized, being called “RINOs” and other names. Far-right folk, your strategies have been excellent, please keep them up!!!
kfg, please don’t interpret my silence as being a sore loser. All I can say about the result is; that’s politics. It doesn’t do anything to change the underlying debate.
Cue Yello’s “Oh Yeah” from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off….
Mmm oh oh, chig-a-chig-aMmm oh oh, OH YEAHHH!
I just can’t WAIT for November!
KFG, don’t like the photo of Connie, just be thankful that the WE didn’t bother to dig up the nude photos of her she had done in her acid freak, home wrecking days.
dingus -EWWWWW!!!
Really Julie!
Even a perv like me is gonna hafta go wash my mind with soap to get THAT image out of my head.
I second it. EEEEEWWWWWWWWWW!!!!
Now if I were only making the coultergeist’s money….
Something’s cannot be rightfully imagined- this QUALIFIES!!Verwy Scarwy.
Heheheh DD, and I always know I am on the right track when Hank is compelled to take a swipe at me.
…and notice he didnt even say this time that he loves me… sniff, cry, sniff, cry…
“aint nobody loves me but my mama, and she could be jivin’ too”.
hee hee hee hee!
Where are those glib blues when ya need a 12 bar lift?
Dear Farm girl,
I do love you! I wouldn’t pick on you if I didn’t.
Hank
KFG- To do the mother- truck’in Glib blues properly , you have to hit way more than 12 bars!FYI
heheheheh, but I lose count after a while… then I hafta start over again… I just hate when that happens….
Victory for science! Setback for supersticion.
The aftermath of this should be interesting. Have their been any comments from Connie “the ripper” Morris or Cindy “the scold” Duckett?
Will they warn against a sudden rain of toads on western Ks?
WHY DOESN’T GOD HIT OHIO FIRST?They started it.Bad state.Bad-bad.
Outlander:”kfg, please don’t interpret my silence as being a sore loser. All I can say about the result is; that’s politics. It doesn’t do anything to change the underlying debate.”
The “debate” that Mr. Outlander refers to is the one that goes on in his and Connie’s fevered imaginations. I, for one, am not convinced that Steve Abrams really believes his ideology. With Connie, and maybe Outlander, it is a different story.
I want to believe the outcome reflects that Kansans are wising up to the disinformation campaigns that have been waged on this subject and many others. That may be hoping for too much…
And Steve Abrams, a veterinarian, is therefore a man of science. I’ve always wondered how a man who works so closely with animals (and I don’t mean the school board) could buy into the ID/Creationist crap.
I believe, snark, snark, that I, in one of my posts, told our dear Connie that if there is a God, He would see to it she was roundly defeated. Can I get a “Praise the Lord!”
“”Outlander makes a good point. In this state, Liberals can’t do anything without the help of moderate Republicans.”Posted by: XXX | January 03, 2006 at 08:30 PM”
DD, I’m not sure I get your point.
And moderate Republicans need Democrats from time to time to get things done. As we all know, the great middle runs the world.
Yee haw, now maybe John Stewart and the other hollyweirdos will lay off Kansas, at least for a while. :)
V.L.R.B!!
X,You made the point way back in January, that moderate Repub help is needed in getting more reasonable things to happen in Kansas. I think that is correct. And this alliance of Moderate Repubs, and even some joining the Democratic party, has resulted because of the extremes the far right Repubs have gone to.
I noticed your post in the page linked by KFG above. It seemed to me that moderate repubs – who started the pro-science education PAC (I mention above) – teamed up with more liberal folks in doing the right thing — which ultimately ended Morris’ candidacy/idiocy.
That’s all I meant.
It is kind of like – the enemy of my enemy is my ally.
. . . or, keep your friends close; your enemies closer.
Calling Cindy Duckett!!! Attention shoppers, calling Cindy Duckett. Please come to the WE blog to get your just desserts!
I have a link to your words here, just in case you have forgotten. Perhaps you can grace us with your “post game analysis” of the POUNDING your team took yesterday?
Post game because, well, the game is OVAH… at least for now. At least for two years.
Oh, please, show us you are not a coward and leave some words of wisdom to ponder.
Or do you have to wait until the church house is open to get more, um, “motivation”?
hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehheeh
http://blogs.kansas.com/weblog/2006/07/are_moderates_u.html#comments
Just in case you have forgotten your brilliant and priecient statements…
Maybe irresponsible comments like her “church motivation” words backfired? Regardless, I could NOT be happier about C Morris’s eviction!!
Whatever will she do now? Work for Jan Beemer’s legislative campaign? Now THERE is a pair..
An uncommonly good examination of ID from John Rennie, on it own terms:
http://blog.sciam.com/index.php?p=221&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1#more221
Rage:What will the IDers do if they read the link? Pawn it off as the usual devil’s work, I guess.
The most interesting part of the link is: “After all, an intelligence that could create life wouldn’t have much trouble changing a foreleg into a wing, would it? Or calving a new species off of an old one? Or producing a hemoglobin allele that confers resistance to mutation?”
That throws the whole notion of ID totally into disarray. It puts evolution right back into the mix. So even if ID were true, and I suspect there is intelligent design, via a supreme being, then it only makes sense evolution has been at work since the first amoeba swam in the primordial soup.
Awesome find, my man!
Ding, Dong, the witch is dead,Which old witch? The wicked witch,Ding, Dong the wicked witch is dead!
Good bye Connie, we won’t miss you. You’ll be remembered forever as the worst of all Kansas jokes.
Now crawl back under the porch and please don’t bite the mailman.
It’s refreshing to see everyone so gracious in victory.
DD, I see. I guess this election did prove my point. IMHO, I don’t care if they are Moderate Republicans as long as the outcome is right.
Somehow the mental picture of the far right off somewhere licking their wounds pleases me. (or licking eachother’s wounds, sickos)
Stuff it, SBA. I don’t remember you pricks being gracious.
Stuff it, SBA. I don’t remember you pricks being gracious.
I am taking this occasion to retire a nic I have used for some time. For at least a little while, evolution advocacy won’t be needed. I am posting by my real name and the way I sign my checks.
I am not the original_steve or the small letter steve – the latter of whom I think is okay.
I have a back log of self-employment work I need to attend to, so will be posting a little less often – but, I just might stop by here when I am goofing off.
It used to be that my self-employment money was used for extra things. These days it is needed for usual expenses. They tell me on NPR that economists are worried about inflation arriving. I say to my radio, I don’t know where those economists live, or if the drive, but inflation is here!
Later.
“Awesome find, my man!”
Thanks, JM!
If moderates join forces, maybe this country can be salvaged yet. Not only our state is at risk, but our way of life.
Must make time to see Rage’s link.
I’ve other matters just now.
DEVASTATING link Rage.
Sorry late. I was just sweeping up some Joe Williams on the end times thread. HE claims there that it is DEMOCRATS that are the chicken littles of the world.
Hey he may evolve.
I guess Science actually won over theology……………….take THAT Connie!
…and on day two of the “where is cindy duckett watch”…
…we are still waiting for her to appear and leave her, um, words of wisdom for us to marvel over?
She must be in church seeing more uh, MOTIVATION? hehehehehehe
Here cindy, here girl, come on, we have a nice treat for you… here cindy.. here girl!
…and what might cindy’s crush have to say on the subject?
heheh. Is bob “I hate public education” corkins too busy working on his resume to issue a statement?
hee hee hee hee hee
bubye bob
hmmm, whoever said revenge is a dish best served cold was right. The same could be said to be true about victory over evil on the kansas board of evangelicals.
hee hee, that victory tastes even BETTER today than it did yesterday!!!!
Cant wait for seconds in November when the rest of the wingnuts hit the unemployement line.
Y’all better get there before bob does. He might break the bank there.
Unless of course cindy has a job waiting for him…..
…and where is ID?
where is Nojoco?
Where are the other cretins who supported the kansas monkey trials?
Hmmm, cant take the heat so they left the kitchen?
Just feels toasty in here to me!
hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee
Oh, and did I mention…
FOUR MORE YEARS to contemplate how miserably you all republicans are failing this year….
I mean, yer losing ground in KANSAS fer god’s sake.
heheheheh
Gosh, sts, ruby, kcl, and the rest of the whole hee haw gang are just absent?
Or hiding…

I thought Cheney shot the guy in the side???
Bye Bye Hee Haw Gang…
double barrel?
bwwahahahahahahah
Gosh, did anyone else notice that values boy was SILENT on the Connie Morris debacle today?
Heheh, I mean, I know they plan their columns ahead of time, or at least the REAL editorial writers do… but…..
You can bet your sweet ass that if con con had WON, he would have been all over it like cheney’s buckshot went all over that old man….
hee hee hee hee hee
What say you values boy? Where is that christian charity in defeat?
Just cant wait for november!
Hmm, still silence. Still no response from the right.
Maybe it WAS the rapture last night and the whole hee haw gang was swept up into heaven. Never to be heard from again!
We could only hope….
Ahhhhh, the sweet smell of absent republicans.
heheheheheheheh
BTW, how’d those social issue votes work out for you all on tuesday?
It’s really great how we’re all so gracious in victory!
SBA! If you call dancing in the endzone gracious, it might not be, but it’s deserving! ;)
*Cabbage Patch Dance*
I’m graciuosly doing the Wren & Stimpy ‘happy-happy, joy-joy’ dance.
Tony, you’re right. The side of his face.
Tracy-”Steeempy, you eeediot!!!” Ren Hoek
Oh yes, and I just loved “LOG-fun for girls and boys”. Ha.
SBA?
Is that YOU Cindy?
So far all YOU do SBA is scold. And not just here but on every thread you post?
And your scolds are short and unimaginative.
Nah you can’t be Cindy. Cindy was shilly and stupid….but boy could she go on about it!
Julie-is the coop even getting my emails? Unusually quiet, makes me paranoid.
Tracy -The purple chicken hasn’t visited me in a few days…I thought the rain was making it sleepy.
oops, just checked and got chicken mail woohoo!
I hope Steve Abrams has kept up his veterinary skills!
That said, I wouldn’t let him treat MY dog! What? Does he lay on hands?
STEEEEeeeeeve?
I’m reminded of a scene from Invasion of the “Body Snatchers”. Remember the guy shouting at the end of that movie?
Steve?
YOU’RE NEXT!
YOU’RE NEXT!!!
YOU’RE NEXT!!!
Thanks for the reply Julie.I was just wondering.Guess nobody has anything to “crow” about. HA.I see everyone is still commenting, but they just don’t reply to my STUPID emails.Oh well, it is a busy world.
I think RD usually kicks the chicken in the butt to get it going.
RD, hope you are feeling better. We are worried about you and miss you here.
My purple chicken went astray. It will be sent back on course today!
My favorite post here so far?
“Connie should crawl back under the porch and not bite the mailman.”
JR- How about replacing crawl with ooze?
Speaking of which JR – how’s your little pup?
Well, not to get off topic.
I do SO love this topic, but since it looks like the fundies have quit the field….
My little dog is healing nicely thank you Julie. He will apparently get to keep his eye. He is not hurting and has returned to his ornery self. I don’t know if he will see out of it. But it could have been a whole lot worse.
Steve Abrams coulda got ahold of him!
