Even Rightie Buchanan is beginning to see through BushDaBum:

“The altarpiece of the Bush foreign policy is Iraq. American dead are at 2,600, the wounded at 18,000. Three hundred billion dollars has been plunged into the war. Yet Iraq is a bloodier, more dangerous place than it has been since the fall of Baghdad. One hundred are being killed every day, half of them in the capital. IED attacks on U.S. troops are at record levels – three and a half years after Baghdad fell.

The Bush democracy campaign brought stunning electoral gains for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Hamas in Palestine, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Moqtada al-Sadr in Iraq. Our ally Hamid Kharzai is today little more than mayor of Kabul, as the Taliban roam the southeast and coalition casualties reach the highest levels since liberation five years ago.”

Why do people attack the rainbow flag and they don’t attack the Confederate flag?

“I read somewhere the one of Macaca Allen’s quirks is that he has a Confederate Battle flag displayed in his home. If it is true, it is appalling behavior for a man that is a member of the United States Senate. Is his loyalty to the United States of America or to the Confederate States of America? What is his motive for displaying such an artifact?

    Treason:

The crime of betraying one’s country, esp. by attempting to kill the sovereign or overthrow the government – Oxford American Dictionary

The offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign’s family – Mirriam-Webster

Violation of allegiance toward one’s country or sovereign, especially the betrayal of one’s country by waging war against it or by consciously and purposely acting to aid its enemies – Dictionary.com

Did the Confederacy not attempt to overthrow the United States government in the southern states by waging war? Is it not fair to call anyone purposely displaying a emblem representing the Confederacy a sympathizer? Why else would they display it? It seems to me that this is particularly true of the people that refer to it as their “heritage”; what “heritage” are they honoring? Slavery? Hatred? War mongering?

Yes, his first amendment rights allow him express himself in any manner he sees fit, maybe this is a blessing to us as it is a direct indication of his true thoughts. If anyone wishes to display a Confederate flag that is their choice.

The way we react to it is ours.”

    http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364×1933892

For the record, when I go to a place of business, if I see the confederate flag on an employee’s car, I turn around and drive right out of there . . .

    Quote of the Day:

Dr Albert Schweitzer, who spent most of his life in Africa, “uplifting” Negroes, receivedthe Nobel Prize for Peace in 1952. He held several doctorate degrees. Shortly before hisdeath, he said:

“I have given my life to alleviate the sufferings of Africa. There is something that allwhite men that have lived here must learn and know; that these individuals are asub-race; they have neither the intellectual, mental or emotional abilities to equate orshare in any of the functions of our civilization. I have given my life to try and bring themthe advantages which our civilization must offer, but I have become well aware that wemust retain this status; white, the superior, and they the inferior, for whenever a whiteman seeks to live among them as their equal, they will either destroy him or devour him,and they will destroy all his work; and so for any existing relationship or for any benefit tothis people let white men from anywhere in the world who would come to help Africaremember that you must continually retain the status; you the master, and they inferior, like children that you would help or teach. Never fraternize with them as equals, neveraccept them as your social equals; or they will devour you; they will destroy you.”Viva La Raza Blanco!!

Ford Sets Steep Cuts to Vehicle Production

By MICHELINE MAYNARDPublished: August 18, 2006DEARBORN, Mich., August 18 — The Ford Motor Company said today that it would cut vehicle production by 21 percent in the fourth quarter, its steepest cut in more than two decades.

In addition, Ford said it was abandoning its goal, reiterated as recently as April, of selling 900,000 pickup trucks a year in the United States. That could eventually mean an end to the reign of Ford’s F-series pickup truck as the best-selling vehicle in America, a market position it has held for nearly a quarter-century. The F-series pickup alone accounts for 30 percent of Ford’s annual sales.

The company said the production cuts were necessary because unexpectedly high gasoline prices this year were depressing sales of pickup trucks. Ford made the announcement in an e-mail message to employees from its chief executive, William Clay Ford Jr.

“We know this decision will have a dramatic impact on our employees, as well as our suppliers,” Mr. Ford wrote in the message. “This is, however, the right call for our customers, our dealers and our long-term future.”

TEN YEARS AGO today, one of the most controversial news articles of the 1990s quietly appeared on the front page of the San Jose Mercury News. Titled “Dark Alliance,” the headline ran beneath the provocative image of a man smoking crack — superimposed on the official seal of the CIA.

The three-part series by reporter Gary Webb linked the CIA and Nicaragua’s Contras to the crack cocaine epidemic that ripped through South Los Angeles in the 1980s

Remember this? Who was the head of the CIA back then?

BTW, the Dow as I write is over 11,000. The past few years, have been really good, at least for me. Some indexes have done much better than the Dow as well. I wish it was better but this Middle East crap weighs on everything. The American economy is doing well.

  34. Posted August 18, 2006 at 1:19 pm | Permalink

    Okay, you’re right, Outlander.

The Dow is up to 11,300 something.

And that would be good, if it hadn’t gotten to about this level five or six times in the past and fallen back each time.

The all-time Dow high was in March 2000 (I think) 11750 or therabouts. In early May of 2006, the Dow was at 11650.

You can see what happened between May and August.

You can still do well in stocks if you pick the right ones, but the rising tide that floats all boats is not there like it was when Clinton was President.

    XXX,

I don’t judge people by where they live. Martin Luther King was from the South. So was Medgar Evers and James Meredith.

I judge people on whether they say things like “the South will rise again” and fly the Rebel battle flag.

A few corrections, the Dow hit it’s all time high in January of 00. Other indexes like the Nasdaq and the S & P 500 hit their highs in March 00.

The Dow is still down, 5 and 1/2 years out by about a percent. The Standard and Poor’s 500, considered a better overall measure, is down 17 percent.

People invest in stocks based on how they think things will go for business in the future.

You can see how people are betting on Bush’s economy.

Cap’n, to my understanding, X. lost a huge chunk of his relatives during that war, thus he’s a little sensitive about perceived disrespect for the anonymous soldiers of the losing side.

I am reminded that Mary Todd Lincoln had two half-brothers who fought for the Confederacy.

Unfortunately, many modern racists DO use the Stars-and-Bars in their own pinheaded way. That’s what we should all be focusing on. I don’t think there’s any disagreement there.

I’m quite impressed with Bush’s performance in Iraq. The nation with some of the largest oil reserves in the world now has to resort to importing oil. Clearly Bush’s promise that Iraqi oil was going to pay for the invasion and neverending occupation fell through, as all his other promises have.

For all the supporters of the occupation what exactly would a victory in Iraq entail? Bush already declared victory once but that was over 1500 Americans deaths ago.

Since LRB wouldn’t respond to this earlier, I’m re-posting it.

This LRB person insists she’s a “progressive,” yet she argues that all of Islam supports the violent overthrow of the United States, that W’s policies protect us and that if we knew what was good for us, we’d all support W and the neo-con agenda and hate the NY Times.

Somehow, I don’t see that jibing with “Fighting Bob” La Follete Sr who opposed the US entry into WWI, who opposed arming merchant marine ships (for which he was called “a skunk who should be hanged” by Theo. Roosevelt), and for FREEDOM OF SPEECH. He also, according to Wikipedia, “campaigned for child labor laws, social security, women’s suffrage, and other progressive reforms. He opposed the prosecution of Eugene V. Debs and other opponents of the war and played a key role in initiating the investigation of the Teapot Dome Scandal during the Harding Administration.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_M._La_Follette%2C_Sr.

Does any of that sound like anything LRB writes? She’s about as “progressive” as Joe Williams is “independent.” She can’t bring herself to criticise any Repukes and the only Dem she likes is Joe Loserman.
