Who among us has not run up a $700 hotel bill in the mistaken assumption that we were browsing, not buying, the entire selection of tawdry movies on the in-room porn channel?
You haven’t? Neither have I, of course. And a coalition of conservative groups wants to make sure we’re spared that misfortune in the future. The group took out full-page ads in some editions of USA Today earlier this month, urging the Justice Department and FBI to investigate whether some of the pay-per-view movies in hotels violate federal and state obscenity laws.
What do you think? Menace to America, or First Amendment battleground? We might not be having this discussion, except the hotel chains say it’s a pretty good revenue stream.

So these groups, who overwhelmingly vote Republican, are pushing to take away the right of a business to operate as it sees fit? It’s pushing for bigger government? Will the Real Republicans please stand up and start screaming? THIS is the face of your party.
This is stupid. People can watch whatever the hell they want.
Hotels make a lot of money on porn movies when Promise Keeper events are in town. Never fear though, conservatives are always saying they are in favor of free markets and capitalism so they can’t possibly ban porn in hotels without looking like hypocrites.
But they’ll do it anyway.
How about it is none of their concern! That seems to be the best answer.
I can’t say that porn is a good thing to be watching. So.. if there is porn available in our room.. we DON’T watch it… and if my kids have their own room.. we BLOCK it. Problem solved!!
I’m just so sick of those holy rollers telling everyone else how to live their lives.
Who needs the government? Just get Fred and Margie Phelps on the job, protesting outside Best Western, etc. Maybe then they’ll be too busy to attend funerals.
The porn channel is what keeps the hotel rates low. They make tons of money off of it.
I don’t see a problem with it at all.
Jesus, get a F%$%’ing life conservative groups. I am tried of them trying to legislate the way I live my life.
Maybe these conservative groups are just trying to keep their fellow members from spending their “tithing” money to hotels for their porn?
The only thing “obscene” is that these people have to but in on peoples private lives so they can feel rightous. I should petition the federal government to have their tax exempt status revoked for trying to forward political goals.
I think in general all churches should have their tax exempt status revoked. I have yet to meet a church that doesn’t talk politics.
Maybe we should ban the Bibles they put in hotel rooms.
Ban the Bible (and Book of Mormon)?
How else can you add to the spicy feeling of watching porn and reading the Bible (or Book of Mormon) at the same time?
Most of the comments here are focused on the wrong group. If you want to keep the moralists out of your life then do not empower the government to enforce morality.
For those who are always wanting a government solution to every problem, this is what you get.
They should outlaw self stimulation.Of any kind. That would settle it.
Wow! Some of the comments I read here…You guys are sick bastards… It’s a good thing I didn’t attend the WE Blog meetup. I mean I’ve said some pretty nasty stuff but, jerking off to porn while reading the Bible!?eeeehhhhh I don’t think I wanna meet you guys, like, ever.
Hey Doug,Any data or information that backs-up your accusation regarding Promise Keepers?
Yes NoJoCo, here you go:

When Mrs. BizSnype and myself come to town we often use the in-room porn to help break the ice with the willing couple we just picked up in the hotel bar…
Get a life people. (That was sarcasm above just in case you’re too obtuse to get it…)
So Biz, you and the little woman are also evangelicals, huh?
Doug, that’s why they want it removed. The devil made them buy those movies and touch their pee-pees.
Nice find, Doug.
Here’s some first-hand accounts from the last Republican convention:
“But one man there [in the strip club] was more subtle in his allegiance. He was dressed in an understated suit with no visible patriotic accessories, his black hair slicked back neatly. Only by looking at his cuff links—silver things punctuated by black stars—could you tell that he was a Pioneer, meaning he’d raised at least $100,000 for the president’s re-election. (Of course, he showed them to me within five minutes of making my acquaintance, so he wasn’t all modesty.)
“He was clearly at ease in the club. I was a good waitress, he told me, and he knew how to tell them: He had owned a strip club. He kept a dancer at his side and bought several dances from her. After three dances, she separated from Mr. Pioneer and found me. At this point we had the classic waitress-stripper exchange of information—how much money did this guy have? And was he cheap?”I don’t know if it’s going anywhere with him,” she said. “I know he has money, but I’m not going to sit here all night for $60. He’s married. With children.” I wasn’t much help. He hadn’t tipped me yet. But I could confirm the married bit. There was a nice silver band on his left hand. It went rather well with the cuff links, actually.
“Before long, though, she had attained what is every stripper’s nightly goal: He took her into a private room. The rooms rent for anywhere from several hundred to a thousand dollars an hour.”http://www.villagevoice.com/blogs/stripclub/our
Sex pros get ready for party
BY JOSE MARTINEZDAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
“Dancers like this one expect to be very busy during the GOP’s convention.
“With thousands of Republicans set to invade the city this summer, high-priced escorts and strippers are preparing for one grand old party.
“Agencies are flying in extra call girls from around the globe to meet the expected demand during the Aug. 30-Sept. 2 gathering at Madison Square Garden.”We have girls from London, Seattle, California, all coming in for that week,” said a madam at a Manhattan escort service. “It’s the week everyone wants to work.”
“It’s going to be big,” agreed one operator at a midtown escort service.
“Charging from $300 to upwards of $1,000 for an hour of companionship and a whole lot more, escorts said they can always count on Republican conventioneers for big business.”

Okay Doug, here’s what the article says: “50 percent of Promise Keepers attendees viewed porn within a week before the event.”
Here’s what you wrote:”Hotels make a lot of money on porn movies when Promise Keeper events are in town.”
I understand that the emphasis of the article is that pornography is a big problem, but what you said is incorrect.
Hey, I’m glad all those people are watching porn in hotel rooms; keeps my room that much cheaper!
Jed,You comfortable sleeping in all that dried semen eh?
NoJoCo’s got a mind like a sponge rubber trap . . . can’t sneak one past him, no siree bob.
News like this probably makes Jan Beemer and her group of judgmental radical extremists dance for joy (without touching of course).
I am sick and tired of these meddling IDIOTS telling adults what they can buy, view and own.
And now Jan Beemer is running for the legislature…oh great, just what we need, another religious whacko in Topeka.
Will,I’m assuming a decent laundry.
Sorry Nojo, a week before an event signifies porn consumption therefore it’s reasonable to conclude that the behavior does not cease once they enter the holy, sacred grounds of a hotel.
Are you under the presumption that viewership of porn ends just because a person, in the privacy of his hotel room, with nothing else to do, will not watch porn despite just having watched it possibly the day prior? Do you have anything to substantiate this claim of sudden abstinence?
The burden of proof is still yours buddy.
Burden of proof has already been satisfied. Take a course in psychology will you.
Little House on the Prairie. You know I’ve always wondered how Micheal Landon’s character was a humble poor farmer, yet at the same time was apparently able to afford such great hair!
I know this is a comment on a very old post but the reason Bibles were placed in hotel rooms in the first place was that during the Depression many people rented hotel rooms and committed suicide. The Gideons begun this tradition as a way of preserving life…even at the last minute.
