‘Is our president an idiot?’

Yes, the headline on this blog item is provocative. But it wasn’t one of President Bush’s liberal critics who asked the question; it was former GOP congressman and conservative cable TV talk-show host Joe Scarborough, who devoted a segment on his “Scarborough County” program on MSNBC last week to a discussion of whether Bush is playing dumb or just plain dumb. Scarborough told the Washington Post that he felt compelled to discuss the subject because he kept hearing fellow Republicans questioning Bush’s capacity and leadership, particularly in Iraq.
John Fund, a conservative commentator who was a guest panelist for the Scarborough discussion, has a column in today’s Wall Street Journal exploring the issue. He points out that much of the public perception about Bush not being smart comes from Bush’s public speaking mishaps. But he argues that the fundamental issue driving the current debate over Bush’s brain is Iraq. “When the going is tough, a president needs to be able to make a clear, vigorous defense of his policies,” Fund wrote. “That clearly isn’t happening right now, and the doubts about the president are starting to grow and threaten to further limit his effectiveness.” Even among the conservative faithful.

Dean would have been chopped into bite-sized pieces.

“In 1971, Dean, who had been a wrestling team captain in high school, received a draft deferment for an unfused vertebra in his back. In the Aug. 15, 2002, Aspen Times, Dean said he “skied 80 days” in Aspen during the winter of 1971-72. The Times reported that Dean “loved skiing bumps,” otherwise known as moguls. (Some health publications note that moguls can put particular stress on the spine.)”

Ouch. He wouldn’t have made it through the whole campaign. The Jackals in the press would be fighting over his entrails.

The Dumbest Things President Bush Said in 2005

    10) “It’s totally wiped out. … It’s devastating, it’s got to be doubly devastating on the ground.”–turning to his aides while surveying Hurricane Katrina flood damage from Air Force One, Aug. 31, 2005

    9) “I’m occasionally reading, I want you to know, in the second term.”–Washington, D.C., March 16, 2005

    8) “This notion that the United States is getting ready to attack Iran is simply ridiculous. And having said that, all options are on the table.”–Brussels, Belgium, Feb. 22, 2005

    7) “I’m going to spend a lot of time on Social Security. I enjoy it. I enjoy taking on the issue. I guess, it’s the mother in me.”–Washington D.C., April 14, 2005

    6) “Because the — all which is on the table begins to address the big cost drivers. For example, how benefits are calculate, for example, is on the table; whether or not benefits rise based upon wage increases or price increases. There’s a series of parts of the formula that are being considered. And when you couple that, those different cost drivers, affecting those — changing those with personal accounts, the idea is to get what has been promised more likely to be — or closer delivered to what has been promised. Does that make any sense to you? It’s kind of muddled.”–explaining his plan to save Social Security, Tampa, Fla., Feb. 4, 2005

    5) “I think I may need a bathroom break. Is this possible?”–in a note to to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a U.N. Security Council meeting, September 14, 2005

    4) “We’ve got a lot of rebuilding to do. First, we’re going to save lives and stabilize the situation. And then we’re going to help these communities rebuild. The good news is — and it’s hard for some to see it now — that out of this chaos is going to come a fantastic Gulf Coast, like it was before. Out of the rubbles of Trent Lott’s house — he’s lost his entire house — there’s going to be a fantastic house. And I’m looking forward to sitting on the porch.” (Laughter)–touring hurricane damage, Mobile, Ala., Sept. 2, 2005

    3) “See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.”–Greece, N.Y., May 24, 2005

    2) “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.” –to FEMA director Michael Brown, who resigned 10 days later amid criticism over his handling of the Hurricane Katrina debacle, Mobile, Ala., Sept. 2, 2005

    1) “You work three jobs? … Uniquely American, isn’t it? I mean, that is fantastic that you’re doing that.”–to a divorced mother of three, Omaha, Nebraska, Feb. 4, 2005

That makes the medical doctor and former governor look pretty good. He didn’t get though college based upon his last name, nor did he get his public office that way.

I wonder why the Repugs have been so scared of Howard Dean the moment he ran for President? I guess they just don’t like educated men and feel more comfortable around knuckle draggers like the failed businessman named Dumbya. Are they jealous because Dean’s anti-war position is now favored by the majority?

What she “forgot” to post was this–

Dean told Russert, “I was given an examination. I had a previous back problem, which is evidently congenital, which prevented me from doing any sustained running, a problem that I’ve had since then, since that time, which requires that when I get out of the car I often have some pains up and down my leg and back and so forth. But I have been able to exercise [and have] a vigorous athletic life except for some things. One of those is long-distance running, which is how the problem came to my attention in the first place. I noticed the pain when I was in high school running track. … After the physical, I received a 1-Y deferment, [which] means you can only be called in times of national emergency. I didn’t have anything to do with choosing any draft deferment. … The United States government said this is your classification. I’m not responsible for that.”

    So…

    Phillip,

You disappoint me. If you are going to have a topic about Bush being an idiot, perhaps you could bring some examples or proof next time.

As usual, the WE editors do little more than to provide the typical Bush haters here yet another venue to hate Bush in.

Not being a very good public speaker doesn’t make someone an idiot.

To even suggest this is a topic of dicussion or should be without even bringing an intelligent thought of your own to guide it shows me yet again the WE editor bias here.

    Ask yourself Phillip:

What is the ratio of good threads vs. critical ones of the president?

Or, could you not be so obvious in the future as with the title of this one?

LRB,See CapnAmerica’s post above, re your “source”.

The military classified Howard Dean 1Y because he had a back condition called spondylolisthesis.

Military training requires running/walking for long hours, carrying a heavy backpack (50 or 80 lbs?), while wearing boots. That puts HUGE stress on the vertebra — unlike skiing, where bent knees can absorb the bumps.

The military does NOT want people who probably wont make it thru training. But spondylolisthesis does not prevent activities such as skiing.

LRB: “The fact that a guy like W can win the White House twice says more about the stupidity of the democrats than it does about Bush.”

Ah so desuka, Sensei, please tell me more.

What “formal settings?” Like the formal setting of a postage stamp, the giant steel company, or the national sports clubs?

If this is true, it should be easy to provide links to back up what you say.

    Here’s what I found–

    From a Japanese forum–

“The people of Japan actually have two names for their land. They call it either Nihon or Nippon. . . .Both forms are still used. . . . But the word they actually use among themselves is either Nippon or Nihon.

    http://www.qi.com/talk/viewtopic.php?t=3890&start=0&sid=85f6b605ac231ce05d59f0acbfc26551

    “Nippon” or “Nihon”?

These two words meaning “Japan” have both been in use for at least five hundred years. The use of “Nippon” has generally been more common . . .

    http://d-training.aots.or.jp/GTJ/html/n.html

The Japanese name Nippon is used for most official purposes, including , postage stamps, and international sporting events. Nihon is a more casual term and the most frequently used in contemporary speech.

    http://experts.about.com/e/n/na/Names_of_Japan.htm

It’s like whether we would call ourselves from America or the United States.

    It’s the same damn thing.

But I’m waiting with baited breath for your explication of this linguistical puzzle.

Draw on your long study of Japanese and your intimate knowledge of “ba: nippon no uchi.” Hold forth for us who long for the shadows of our ignorance to shrink back from the brilliance of your analysis!

This poem is composed entirely of actual quotes from George W. Bush. Thequotes have been arranged into verse by Washington Post writer RichardThompson.**************************************************MAKE THE PIE HIGHERby George W. BushI think we all agree, the past is over. This is still a dangerous world. It’s a world of madmen and uncertaintyand potential mental losses.Rarely is the question askedIs our children learning? Will the highways of the Internet become more few?How many hands have I shaked? They misunderestimate me.I am a pit bull on the pant leg of opportunityI know that the human being and the fish can coexist.Families is where our nation finds hope, where our wings take dream.Put food on your family!Knock down the tollbooth!Vulcanize society!Make the pie higher! Make the pie higher!—–
Hell yes he’s an idiot, and an immature one at that. I present evidence #529….

“A top insider let slip when explaining why President Bush is paranoid around women, always worried about his behavior. But he’s still a funny, earthy guy who, for example, can’t get enough of fart jokes. He’s also known to cut a few for laughs, especially when greeting new young aides, but forget about getting people to gas about that.

    The short answer is “yes”.

The long answer is that Bush has demonstrated since the beginning that he was more interested in winning the presidency than in being president. I am quite sympathetic to people with language disorders, but that is not what is happening here. Bush simply can not articulate his reasons for doing much of anything unless he has had a lot of preparation beforehand. He is disinterested in policy, certainly disinterested in the long term consequences of policy, and those are extremely unfortunate and dangerous traits in a president.

That’s probably as close to an admission of error we can hope from LRB, but, damn, I was looking forward to the detailed explanation of the formal versus informal uses of Nihongo.

Just trying to figure out when to use “wa” or “ga” as a subject marker is almost impossible, so I was hoping to get an education on this much more complex topic.

But he isn’t dumb. He’s just not the right person for that position. He should be a mid-level government worker or in mid-management in some company. But running the country or the State of Texas isn’t his forte’.

There used to be comparison videos on the web that showed a “then and now” version of Bush. The “then” was of him during a debate over 10 years ago, when he was running for Gov. of Texas. He was articulate. He appeared to know what he was talking about. He didn’t stumble, stutter, pause, or make up words.

We’ve all viewed the “now” version of this man, and many of us have found him lacking, to say the least. There was obviously a vast difference in the man 10 years ago than what we see today. Alcohol? Drugs? I don’t know, but I’d venture a guess at possibly both.

“It’s Nihon. Sorry. There really isn’t anything to discuss. You were proven wrong by your own sources. The Japanese people call their home Nihon. Why is that so hard to acept?”

Cap was not proven wrong by his own sources.

To recap, you opened this Japanese debate with:

Cap-”I guess she calls China “Zhung Guo” or Japan “Nippon” or Germany “Deutschland,” because that’s what the local indigenous people call it.”

    You-”It’s Nihon, not Nippon.

But that doesn’t make any difference to you. You just call ‘em Japs, right?”

Note that you presume to correct the good Capn on his usage. Not your exclusionary use of language. Nihon is correct, Nippon is incorrect.

    Cap’s response was:

“LRB said that the Japanese call their country Nihon not Nippon.

    Actually, they call it both.”

And that’s exactly what Cap’s sources said:

“Nihon or Nippon; officially ??? Nihon or Nippon-koku”

“They call it either Nihon or Nippon.”

“”Nippon” or “Nihon”?These two words meaning “Japan” have both been in use for at least five hundred years. The use of “Nippon” has generally been more common than the softer-sounding “Nihon,” but the decision on which to adopt officially has yet to be made. In international sporting events, however, “Nippon” is used almost exclusively, perhaps because of its more authoritative-sounding ring and more eye-catching design when alphabetized. Besides “Nippon” and “Nihon,” the name “Jippon” was also once used. This may have been the forerunner of the English word “Japan” and its equivalents in other languages.”

It is not good enough to you to demonstrate that Nihon is a correct form. Cap already indicated that it was. It is incumbant on you to show that Nippon is incorrect. You have failed to do so. What’s more, your claim that the Capn’s own sources support your exclusionary claim is clearly false. Cap claimed both were correct, and that’s what his sources indicated. Since the words are right there in black in white, either you are willfully lying, you have serious problems with reading comprehension, or you are now trying to make this a Nihon verse Nippon claim where the Capn is claiming Nippon to the exclusion of Nihon, which he is not. Indeed, you have provided no evidence for your exclusionary claim whatsoever other than your “daughter teaching in Japan” calling the Capn an idiot. That’s not evidence of anything except perhaps that your shortcomings were inherited by your daughter.

Do you really think repeating the same contention over and over again in the face of contrary evidence is doing anything other than making you look like a complete fool?
