A Washington Post article last month about a secret biolaboratory at Fort Detrick, Md., was interesting but didn’t get much attention. Scientists there simulate bioterrorism attacks. This research could be critical in responding to a future homeland attack. But some critics worry that the lab could actually increase the risk of bioterrorism, because its excessive secrecy could lead other countries to pursue secret biological research. It would be better, the critics argue, to be more transparent so as to reassure the rest of the world that the work of the lab really is purely defensive. One biosecurity expert said that the philosophy of the lab seems to be: “Our intent is good, so we can do whatever we want.” Such an approach, she said, “will only lead to trouble.”

Well I’m sure some Democrat in Congress will use it agains Bush somehow.
Didn’t DNA testing show that this lab was the source of the anthrax attacks?
For instance the anthrax attacks.
They should find the people who did it and have a public execution.
With so many fearful people, now is not the time to split hairs over which particular Arab did it.
“now is not the time to split hairs over which particular Arab did it.”
Never mind that it probably was done by an American with military connections.
What’s the world coming too? Now the Washington Post is giving away all our State Secrets to the enemy! The investigation should be immediate and the traitors lynched!
I live in frederick next to the lab and track nation news on the subject. Rarely do I see such horribly stereotypical responses to articles like this. For general info:1. Everyone who has looked into it is of the opinion that the anthrax in the letters came from detrick.2. The base has a horrible safety record and there is a little problem with cancer in the areas surrounding it.3. Some of the research will involve genetically engineering new pathogens that there is no cure for.
This is a deadly serious topic and while it may be funny for those of you who think killing everyone who is not American is a good plan the rest of us who actually have a world view that extends past the Midwest see this as a real concern. Did you notice the fact that we are the only country who will not allow international inspections? Did you connect the dots that one of the reasons W used to justify the invasion of Iraq was that he thought they had facilities like this? Or are you just reacting like red state robots to a story that calls for our country to think a little before we break international treaties and start another arms race. It would not hurt to think a little instead of basing you political beliefs on abortion and gun control.
They did the same kind of testing in the 60`s. use your favorite search engine, and put in project 112/shad. Many military members were exposed to bioweapons testing, and the government denied it for years. This is no joke, and more dangerous than any kind of nuclear weapon.Testing was done in several large cities of the U.S., with out informing the “Subjects”, that they were being used in Bioweapons Experiments.Just do a little research — this has been going on for 40 years, and now some of you are concerned ??
