The Hutchinson News opined that the Sedgwick County commissioners "deserve credit for their decision last week to increase property taxes in the face of strong opposition." Noting some of the extra dollars will fund an aviation training center, the editorial concluded: "Reno County has not been successful at tapping into those jobs, so it might be time to try a different approach. Perhaps it should pay for a portion of the training center in return for a certain number of slots. Those slots could then be used to build our own highly skilled work force and, eventually, capture some of the spill-over from Wichita as more companies need expansion or relocation options."

I’m sorry, but I still see no reason to build a brand new campus at Jabara when all of those classes are already being offered at existing collages in the Wichita Area.
Did anyone see the list of classes coming up this fall? (i went looking for the list but i could find it). I saw classes being offered at WATC, Southwestern, the South Side Education Center (outside Spirit), and WSU i believe…
Why can’t the city divvy up the money to those schools instead of wasting it on a new facility? makes plenty of since to me, especially since these collages are already offering these classes!
They don’t have to worry because the money is not coming from their pockets. Lucy did not care about raising taxes because her friends at the Riverside Perk (where she parks her butt each day and gets her marching orders on how she should vote) wanted a tax increase. She found out what the rest of her district thought of that one. See ya Lucy!
We do not need another tech school here in Wichita or Sedgwick County. If the Aviation folks feel they have such a need and they want someone else to do it they could partner with WSU, WATC or several others to do so. The County does not belong in the Education business.
I agree that the county didn’t need to pay for an aviation training center. But what the hell are we going to do?
Recall the Aviation Training Center and Jail Expansion?
Lucy lost her job, but I doubt Ben or others will.
Will the Hutchinson News be endorsing Ben Sciortino and Dave Unruh?
At least the called Buchanan et all on the carpet for their silly assertions about “misleading” facts.
You all will be SURPRISED by all the things the Hutch News will do and say now that it is under the esteemed democratic leadership of John “my daddy owned the company” Montgomery.
heheh. I told ya so. Just remember that…..
I also doubt that Hutch will not recieve any “spill over” from Wichita.
El Dorado, Wellington and Winfield are the only ones that really do.
I wish we could recall the arena and the tech center. I also think we should legalize POT and therefor we wouldn’t need the expansion of the jail!
Why is it the first thing our Sedgwick county commissioners do when presented with a new situation is to shout, in unison no less: “Hurrah, lets build another new white elephant at taxpayers expense.”
Thats what they did again: Winters, Shortino, Unruh, Norton and Burtnet.
$40 million for a new airplane technical education building at Jabara airport in the far northeast corner of Wichita and $__?_ million for another county jail expansion. Financed with a bond issue, no less.
In the case of the airplane tech center, the training is already available at other locations in the county and probably will continue to be. The free enterprise system will see to that.
In the case of another new jail, rather than warehousing petty offenders, surely the mental health professionals in Wichita can propose another more effective and less expensive alternative.
And there are a lot of other technical fields that might now request facilities: medical/nursing, nursing home employees, security officers (especially important now), automobile technicians, national guard/reserves training facilities, computer recycling facilities, recycling center … you name it.
A new facility should be flexible for all kinds of training. AND IT SHOULD BE LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF THE WICHITA METROPOLITAN AREA FOR EXAMPLE IN THE WATER WALK AREA. The basic idea is good but once again the county commissioners are running without thinking.
In my opinion, this is another dream from the minds of the local architects/contractors and “Visioneering” people. The current county commissioners are brainwashed to think that as soon as someone snaps their fingers, it is their patriotic duty to jump and spend — high and big!
Some of you really should make the time and effort to learn factual information about things that go on in this county and city before you start spouting off. As the saying goes, “It’s better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that you’re stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.”

Whom might you be refering to?
All of the above to some extent or another.
Enlighted the group with the facts.
