My column Friday reported on the Meade rainbow flag controversy. Seems some folks in Meade are up in arms about a gay pride flag flying in front of a hotel owned by J.R. and Robin Knight. They say it was an innocent gift from their 12-year-old son; but some locals demanded it be removed.
Then someone cut it down, and the Knights vowed to keep putting the flags up.
The situation got far uglier Friday when the Knights reported that someone threw two bricks at their hotel — one went through the restaurant window.
Scrawled on the brick was the word "fag." Another brick fell short of the building, J.R. Knight told The Eagle editorial board. It said, "Get the f— out of town."
Local police are investigating.
"I’m scared," Robin Knight told me. "I just don’t know what’s the matter with these people." She said that there are "a lot of good people here who support us." But Meade obviously has some very bad apples as well. Town residents need to speak out and condemn this harassment.

Republicans, sensing a slight opening, are pulling out all the stops about how the tragic defeat of Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman portends the end of civility, bipartisanship and Western Civilization As We Know It. Right.
One of the favorite talking points is that Joe was the last tough Democrat. Alas, the species is now extinct. Problem is, as Connecticut voters saw it, Lieberman wasn’t nearly tough enough. He was voted out because he acted like a sissy as a member of the loyal opposition — all loyalty, no opposition.
Equally fatuous are the claims that Ned Lamont’s primary win heralds a sharp, reckless and irreversible turn to the radical left for the Dems. If that’s so, why did far-left loose cannon Rep. Cynthia McKinney, D-Ga., get soundly thrashed out of office in this same election?

The Wichita City Council approved a tax-increment financing district for a high-profile new condo and apartment complex on Douglas Avenue, across from the historic Hillcrest condo building. This is prime neighborhood and community space that deserves an innovative project, and local developer Mike Loveland said he needed the TIF to attract investors to his $40 million condominium project, which includes three-story brownstone apartments (apparently the first in Wichita) fronting Douglas as well as a 12- to 14-story tower.
After years of waiting for something to be done about the old state office building eyesore at that corner (it was finally torn down last year), College Hill residents should welcome a project that adds to the aesthetics and livability of this area.
