It’s remarkable that after all the discussion of how the arena should boost the city’s dismal concert scene, the Rolling Stones have booked a concert not at any indoor venue but at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium. And on Oct. 2, when Wichita’s weather forecast could be, ahem, interesting. Still, anytime Wichita shows up on the big rock tour itineraries — even for a band perhaps best suited these days to promote AARP — it’s time to celebrate.

Is this their Steel Wheelchair tour?
Wasn’t Keith Richards on some list as the rock star most likely to die young? Didn’t happen despite his best efforts.
And, doesn’t Mick Jagger look a lot like Don Knots the older he gets?
HOLY SHIT.
Dang, and I’m not a big Stones fan.
DD, are you sure Richards didn’t die young? ;)
I actually talked to Mick on the isle of Mustique several years ago. He looks a lot worse in person!
Hank
Muhwaaa! In your face! In you mofo face. For all the anti-progress, anti-arena people who said that there is no way Wichita could ever attract the Rolling Stones.
Shoot! If we had our new arena built, they would be playing there.
I’m buying tickets! :)
Wichita Rocks!
And amazingly, Wichita didn’t need a new arena to make it happen.
Keep the O2 handy.
Well it may be the fact that this group was in their prime long before I was that prompts me to say, SO?
HEY, what happened to family values?Don’t you realize they are promiscous drug users? Not to speak of groupies, orgies, and EVEN gay sex!Shame on you people for participating in this debauchery.
Now back to reality: Right On!Wichita Rocks!!I hope they play “Some Girls”, I love that song.Oh, and the girl? Well you know what kinda’ eyes she’s got.
JR: It’s the STONES, man.
I saw them at Arrowhead probably 15 to 20 years ago. People were talking about how old they were then. And they still sell out stadiums.
Wow! Good news for this town and I’m sure tickets will sell out. Comfort level of fans at that concert will be iffy. Cessna hasn’t felt that many on its shoulders in a very long time. But so what, people used to be in mud fields to see a concert.
What’s the question about Oct 2nd weather. No forecaster can see more three days ahead reasonably, typical negative thinking that goes on here, something bad is going to happen or it won’t be realized.
Should be good weather, its normally raining or snowing on Halloween later in the month.
Surprise for doodah, lets prepare to party if only for one night. We got to practice acting a real city, with group mentality to accomplish entertaining things.
Crap! I KNEW they were just waiting for me to leave!
Mick, I’ll get you for this! :)
Ever heard of the Keith Richards barometer? If Keith’s skin is yellow, it means fair weather; if it’s green, it means rain. . . :)
If they don’t cancel at the last minute the way a lot of even only semi-famous groups do.Tryin’ not to think negative, but if history is any lesson…
Rage,Stones are also gonna play Cardinal Stadium in Phoenix. Or you can use the concert as an excuse to come back and visit. ;)
Quite frankly, Julie, I’d rather see them in Cessna Stadium. It’s not exactly the Cotillion, but still a pretty intimate venue for them.
Unfortunately, the odds of me flying in for a rock concert/visit don’t look too good right now (oh well).
well it’s still 3 months away and a lot can happen in 3 months :)
“I actually talked to Mick on the isle of Mustique several years ago. He looks a lot worse in person!”
Hehehe! Was that in the mid-80s, Hank? My dad was on Mustique in ‘85 or ‘86 and ran into him, and said the same exact thing about him you did!
This was very shortly before Jeri Hall got busted in Barbados.
It should be renamed the “I can’t believe they’re still alive” tour.
When the Rolling Stones cut their first record John F. Kennedy was President.
I had to forward look on a calendar, Monday Oct. 2nd.
That business day should shut down city wide. Use the weekend to promote events, free stuff. Barbeque’s downtown, get folks out and about. Bus free, trolly free.
There are some realities to using Cessna stadium, no place to park and knowing some maybe concerned about straying too far into neighborhoods around WSU, just shut that idea down quick among folks.
Make the weekend a reason to experience Wichita and Monday is the capper. Its not anything anybody had on a calendar. Lets be flexible, just through a fall party around town for that three day weekend.
“I can’t get no, …. (oxygen in my bloodstream) ….”

While I am sure that baby boomer nostalgia will sell some tickets, the Rolling Stones have been washed up for about three decades. Will the concert feature a booth with information on receiving Social Security benefits and an area where geezer fans can get free prostrate exams and pamphlets from local nursing homes. Will vendors pass through the crowd offering free samples of Depends and Ensure?
However, it will be a good excuse for Rolling Stones fans to break out their best set of teeth for the evening and have a hip fracture of a good time.
Scott- Yeah, you’re right- absolutely no one has seen them in 30 years! Blather on!!
On the memorials thread Jeff had this to say
When you look at person’s birth and death dates, remember, their life and existence is not defined by those two outer markers. It is defined by the dash in between the dates. Live your dash well!
Posted by: Jeff | July 25, 2006 at 12:28 PM
Love them or not, one thing is definately certain about the Stones – they have definately fit a lot of livin’ in the ‘dash’.
Hey Scott…
Here is a thought, if you don’t like the Stones, then don’t go. Belitting people who like them is rather childish, immature, and totally unnecessary.
Let me guess, you like the rap crap glorifying rape, murder, drug use and violence?
I have it on good authority Keith Richards is actually dead. He just doesn’t know it yet.
Sticky fingers: One of the best albums ever made . . . EVER!!!!
good call raptor – scott clearly is still in diapers!
Mrage – extremely good ideas!
Raptor- I think the correct terminology is crap music.
You have it wrong, not a fan of rap at all.
But I do like my rock music to be performed by people younger than my grandfather. Bands like the Rolling Stones have perfected the art of taking money from aging baby boomers that refuse to acknowledge that the music of their youth is as relevant today as Glenn Miller and his orchestra.
Dude! I’m sort of young, and the Stones rock. Actually! Music now-a-days, even the rock music sucks really bad. No talent, repetitious, pop-music orientated and the bands can’t survive but two albums at the most before they break up and fall from grace.
When was the last guitar god to come out of rock music? Slash from Gun n Roses, Jerry Cantrell from Alice n Chains? Nobody has even come out with any guitar talent for since then.
Rolling Stones always puts out good music. Their “Bridges to Babylon” album, which came out in 1998 was awesome! Putting all the young punk bands to shame.
Don’t dog the oldies. The best concerts I’ve been to are old people like Page/Plant (Led Zeppilin), Steve Miller Band, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Van Halen and even Ozzy Osborne are all bands I’ve seen in the past 10 years and they’ve rocked the house.
I’ve always wanted to go to their concert, guess I’ll get a chance.
Gee, if it wasn’t for the Stones and the groups before them that started rock and roll, we might still be listening to Glenn Miller. And if it hadn’t been for Glenn, Woodie Guthrie, and all those before them, we’d probably still be listening to the 3 B’s. Bach, Bethoven and Brahms. Those aren’t so bad, either.
And what’s wrong with Glenn Miller? It was the music my parents listened to, so I did have a taste of it, and it’s good stuff if you just give it a chance and open your mind.
For years I didn’t like Country music, then I started listening to it. Went to the George Strait concert and saw Garth Brooks. I stayed with it for a while and still listening occasionally. I really like Bluegrass though.
I never liked jazz. And then I started listening to NPR and heard it once a week. Now I like it. Not all, but a lot more than I thought I ever would.
Scott, just think. If there had never been boomers, you wouldn’t BE.
tee hee
I really can’t believe the wusses, worrying about the weather in early October. Even Cessna stadium in October can’t compare to Arrowhead in late December. No way, no how. Especially sitting up near the top with the wind blowing straight into your face. Now that’s cold.
I never said that there was anything wrong with the music of either the Rolling Stones or Glenn Miller.
My complaint is the hype, hoopla, back slapping, calls for a citywide celebration, etc due to the fact that a washed up band has decided to visit town during their most recent “Pick the Pockets of the Boomers” tour. It is the same angst that I express whenever anybody acts like it is some kind of big deal that aging rock acts like the Stones and Eagles will stop almost everywhere to collect as much money as possible before their fans all die or forget their own names.
Hey Rage,
I think it was in ‘89. Joyce and I and two other couples rented a catamaran from Bequia and sailed over there for the day. The girls went on a walking tour and us manly men stayed at Basil’s Bar and Grill as a rear guard. Mick, Jeri Hall and their rug rats came in for lunch.
I’ve got some pictures somewhere….
Hank
All in all, I’m a little surprised by the disrespect bordering on contempt that the younger posters seem to be exibiting on this thread.
Not for the Stones, but toward us boomers! You act like we’re over the hill or something! I have met some of the boomers on this BLOG and I’ve met several of you younger whipper snappers. I haven’t seen one of you disrespectful little snots that can beat me arm wrestling. In fact, I am willing to bet that XXX, JM and I can beat any four of you younger than forty turds in a tug-of-war, 9 ball competition, poker tournement, or darts.
Hank
PS I aint driving no Buick!
The Stones played Ford Center Arena in January 2003. They played in Denver in 1999, 2003 and then last Thanksgiving. They’ve already been to Omaha last January. They played Salt Lake City in 99 and again last November. They went to Little Rock in March. The fall tour is actually an encore of the fall 2005-winter 2006 “Bigger Bang” tour. El Paso, Boise, Idaho and Missoula, Montana will be seeing them. Getting a slot on the fourth Stones tour in the last seven years isn’t exactly putting Wichita on the big time entertainment meccas roster. Basically, like Pavarotti a couple years ago, they’re trying to get their retirement and estate portfolios packaged. But, it should be an entertaining show, nonetheless.
Scott – a “washed up” Stones will beat the crap out of ANY of today’s so-called bands. As Joe said, none of these newbies have any talent nor staying power.
Scott- Go listen to Brittany Spears and it will be alright!
Yo pup, Scott
Mind your elders musically. You only see wrinkles, forget that. Go to concerts close your eyes and listen to the music.
Keep open your sense of others around having a good time. Half the concert who cares what’s going on the stage. Stones new songs..that’s not what most want to hear.
You discount opening bands. If your choice of rock had a brain they would see our concert is on Monday, so the weekend would be free to clip some change in doodah. It could be any band.
Your free not to go or head out of the city that weekend, we’re so lame to your numb sensibilities.
Appreciate history! The Stones sound and presentation won’t be terrible.
I saw then in Omaha, best concert I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to quite a few. I have to agree with Hank, they’re even uglier in person, but they make up for that with their phenomenal band and energy. I can’t believe ‘ole Mick can still jump around like that at his age, it’s inspiring to all us old folks. I just hope I can get tickets, I’m sure they’ll sell out the first few hours they’re on sale.
The only thing I’m worried about is… how many busloads of legislators will Sprint be bringing this time?I DON’T want to run into Kay O’Connor in the mosh pit!!!!
Scott, whether you like or not, the Rolling Stones ARE a legendary band. They were as seminal to the British Invasion as the Sex Pistols were to punk. Their albums (still) consistenly go gold, and they play sold-out shows around the world to several generations of fans. And this isn’t some cheesy “reunion tour” (like the Eagles’ “Death Warmed Over” concerts); they’ve been actively writing and putting out new material, and, IMHO, it ain’t bad.
I don’t believe in arguing about music; it’s usually pointless. My own tastes are wide-ranging and eclectic, and stretch across many genres. I like some things that would probably shock and/or bewilder many of the regular posters here, and that’s okay. They’re not required to like what I like, and vice versa.
You seem to be paranoid about older artists getting attention, and I’m not sure why.
“I DON’T want to run into Kay O’Connor in the mosh pit!!!!”
I bet the reverse might be true, too. :-)
Since Scott has already taken the petty shots, I am going to weigh in with some real criticism. I have an album somewhere that is a bunch of the Alligator recording artists doing rolling stones covers. Alligator talent are most black Chicago blues acts. They do the Stones songs much better than the origninal band. The Stones stole black blues music, did poor covers of them, and sold a lot of that stuff to unknowing white teenagers. Even the name of their band comes from some black blues song.
I will compliment them in that they have good taste in what they stole.
Bye, bye Miss American Pie,Drove my chevy to the levy,But the levy was dry…(that song was about Buddy Holly – whom the Beatles shamefully ripped off)
Original American music is much better!
I do like the original, raw rock-n-roll of the early 50’s, and get-down-and-dirty blues. Much of modern blues leaves me cold because it’s too polished.
I agree that original versions of the old R&B songs are invariably better. I’m a big Beatles fan, but compare Pat Strom’s “Money” to their cover sometime (better yet, don’t).
I tend to like music with bumps and sharp edges, regardless of genre, but that’s just me. Stravinski, anyone? How about Sonic Youth?
Just My OpinionĀ®. :)
Music, like many things in life, is open to interpretation. The Stones did some good work inspired by the blues and that can’t be taken from them.
Gary Moore’s “Still got the blues” is the best slow blues guitar I have ever heard or played. Gary is a white Englishman.
Opinions expressed in my previous post are just that, the opinion of one person.
Death? Shouldn’t you be at Keith Richards house?
You kidding, CW? Keith and I are drinking buddies. I keep wacking him with the scythe and nothing happens. He just laughs. Damndest thing.
I’m looking at this concert on a Monday as chance for this city to make it a 3 day weekend of events, without overcharging for things to see and do. People from out of town are coming to Wichita for this concert!
The social experience is mostly fun at concerts, meeting people you never would or seeing old friends. Its great to dance with strangers.
This community needs events to bring 30,000 and more people crowds together. Its a good test.
I don’t know if the WSU golf course would allow people on blankets, to sit on parts of the course where everyone walks, just to be near enough and hear the tunes. Could be a money maker for the golf course. No one wants to be too far away of Cessna stadium. Not everyone wants to be inside the stadium either.
I like live music, whether Stones are the greatest or not doesn’t matter. I’m not a Rock guy anyway, but I recognize talent and ability to put on a concert. I’ve seen bad concerts mostly in the Coliseum, so the facilities matter. Concerts are supposed to be outdoors.
Stanley Clarke is my favorite bassist. His AT THE MOVIES CD I think is best collection of bass front tunes ever. I like Najee who plays a variety of instruments covering Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life Album.
Someone invite U2 or Metallica to play on Friday or Saturday night. Foo Fighters, Santana’s tour, any band.
Invite who want Scott, hit the music group on the net or talk with any radio station promoter. Try to get your choice of live bands in this city that weekend. Stones can play in Wichita, any band can.
A generation or two (maybe three) ago I was in new construction on a submarine in Pascagoula, MS.
I belonged to the ‘white’ VFW but I lived at the black VFW. Down there on the gulf coast blues circuit some of the best black blues performers in the world would play at the black VFW.
I have seen too many to name. Mississippi, blues, gulf coast, blue crab gumbo, Jax beer. . . oh Lordy…
Scott obviously has no taste. He’s the type that gives kids a bad name.
Go Hank! But I don’t think a tug of war that involves me would be fair to the other side, lol! Poker and darts are fine, I prefer 8-ball, and you probably should have included some target shooting. But I’ll stand with you against any of the youngsters. Bring it on!
“”Pick the Pockets of the Boomers” tour”?
Scott, you ignorant slut (damn, I bet that’s before your time also!), Music has rarely been free. The Stones still put on a “show”. It in’t stealin’ if you are enjoyin’.
But why knock something you ain’t seen? Or is it they’re not Dr Z or whoever you’re into.
Old? Bet you drink wine bottled by truck.
Me? I’ll savor a wine that’s been mellowed by time, with nuances you never heard before.
Old? you’re old if you got no favorites that grew up with you. You come from the right now generation: give it to me because I want it. Don’t even think of giving me yesterdays blues.
Me? Yesterdays blues are what made todays blues possible, and I enjoy both for different reasons. You want to know what blues players are playing today? By players nobody but blues lovers have heard of? Go to http://www.guitar9.com and listen to guitar players that will have you freakin’ out, if you like guitar playing.
Old? You’re old Scott, because you have no idea what music is. You think music is something you play to turn on some bimbo, and put another notch in your mini-gun.
Me? I know music is what drives the soul, and keeps me young. I’m way past the bimbo stage in life (thank god), but I still get the heebie jeebies every time I hear the blues played like it should be, old or young. The Stones know how to do both.
So, Scott, take your Geritol, sit on the couch, and listen to Brittiny. The Stones wouldn’t do you any good anyway.
Hank,Ya, what XXX said!!!
Hmm well I wonder if I should take offense to some of what is said above?
And I think some of you are grossly overestimating the importance of this event.
JM, XXX,
There’s an old saying:
“He’s the kind of guy you’ld float the river with.”
I’ve been fortunate in my life to make some friends that I’d gladly ‘float the river with’.
I may be getting old, but I don’t meat too many any more. I have been to the firing range lately with a couple though!
Hank
PS I can play a little eight ball.
“Hmm well I wonder if I should take offense to some of what is said above?”
Why?
I only see a concert J R, things to do in October, we didn’t realize happening before today.
The sun will rise and fall on that Monday, Tuesday the city will return to what we are. A city off the radar of events, failing facilities, half done “destinations” or projects not realized yet.
But the kernel of ideas can begin to form. Could Cessna support more concerts.
A group forms constantly to see events. Some day WSU football is returning but we have to build a new stadium that will have 40 to 50,000 seats.
People who complain about the downtown arena are wondering what events and imaging the 15,000 seat facility is too small, for regionally competitive events. It is. The Stones wouldn’t play in our downtown arena. It will be interesting to see who might. What bands in the future will find Wichita a place to hold concerts constantly.
A 50,000 seat facility needs a weekend festival of music to play and that place to make money if filled up. I demand outdoor concerts, and grass field for WSU football, the stadium will have a retractable roof.
Everything has to begin to form from somewhere. It does take a village motivated to see events. The key problem with Wichita.
Well let’s see…, the Stones in October, Lynyrd Skynyrd at the State Fair, and Blood Sweat and Tears playing the Nationwide Tour event next week.
Not bad.
Anybody want to take a guess how much tickes will be? No matter how much, with gas now at $2.99, we’ll all be walking to Cessna Stadium. ;)
Out, the BS&T concert is Saturday, not next week.
You’re right RD. It snuck up on me.
Hank, IMHO taking in the Mississippi blues experience back then would be well worth drinking Jax beer (ick!). :) Wow.
Hey I’m sorry. I aint bagging on folks like scott did. I just fail to see why this is such a big deal. What? If you don’t think this is the event of the century you are somehow deficient?
It’s like believing in Santa, its better if you do if only for a short time. We just didn’t realize someone would find Wichita a place to do something.
It’s not like the Stones have a clear picture of this city. Cessna Stadium isn’t used often, they don’t know that.
For one day, Wichita should host something exciting. Lets try to stretch a weekend out of it as a community.
Or you could stay home and miss it all, so what. Its just stuff to do for some people.
Uhm, no. I detailed above why it’s likely to be a successful show and, for those who are fans, a good one.
And you might note the invective above was squarely aimed at Scott, not you. You and me (and Mrage) are all part of the Old Fart Crew, relatively speaking, ya know.
One could argue, say, that Nine Inch Nails was just as big a deal, but it didn’t sell out within hours. The Stones will.
I might be wrong (talking off the top of my head), but I’m thinking the last time a rock concert did that was when Pearl Jam sold out in 20 minutes.
Will it magically transform Wichita? Hell no. But it’s bound to a big draw (and a good time)just the same.
—–
“I have seen too many to name. Mississippi, blues, gulf coast, blue crab gumbo, Jax beer. . . oh Lordy…”
Hank, you have been very lucky. I am envious to a degree that is difficult to explain.
In this case, JR…I’ll put it to you this way: I’m willing to risk eviction for tickets :)
JR..we agree on that one. I won’t be attending, especially not at $89 a ticket. But, for all the Stones fans, I hope they enjoy! To be judgmental and totally disrespectful of others as Scott has done, demonstrates his total lack of maturity and tolerance. The cracks about depends, etc., were uncalled for.
If I can’t get tickets, I don’t know why you couldn’t just sit on the lawn at WSU and be able to hear just fine. I suspect I wouldn’t be alone.
Well Hank, XXX and Walker, since you have problems with us young whippersnappers just wait until baby’s born and I can drink. I can play better darts and pool when I’ve been drinking, can’t play worth a darn sober ;)’course I’ll probably be singing along with the oldies that your listening to anyway but still….
“I DON’T want to run into Kay O’Connor in the mosh pit!!!!”
heheheheh
I WOULD like to literally “run into” her in the mosh pit. I’d just grin and say “remember me?”
heheheheh
Maybe she could bring susan wagle and connie morris with her? I hear at least connie is an old band biotch.
Of course the question would be, whose face is uglier? Mick or Kay?
heheh. You decide.
…and as for the blues, my favorite genre, I only have one sentence.
Stevie Ray Vaughn in Austin, Texas on the shores of Town Lake.
’nuff said
I don’t know about Connie, but Susan’s version of her history was that she was the type of girl one would look up if you were a highschooler who was too lazy to masturbate.
Stevie was one of the greatest. His bro, Jimmy is under-rated. I remember sitting in a bar in Seattle in the late 80’s telling the folks there that two days before, I heard the Fabulous Thunderbirds at the Cotillian, in Kansas. The folks there claimed I was lying and that there had never been any culture observed in Kansas.
Maybe their statements would be more true today, but they weren’t then.
My two dumbest concert decisions:
1) As a 9th grader declining to go see that guitarist who set his guitar on fire: It was Jimi Hendrix.
2) Turning down a friend’s offer to go to the Cotillian to hear a Texas guitarist — Stevie Ray Vaughn — before he was on anybody’s radar.
These are probably the two worst decisions of my life.
The last Hendrix concert scheduled for Wichita was cancelled due to poor ticket sales, if you can believe it.
I understand DD. My dumbest concert regret is not going to Guns N Roses/Metallica (when they did their co-headlining tour in ‘90 or ‘91) I was to scared to skip high school to go. I should have skipped.(I have since seen Metallica – man they ROCK!!!! but GnR is an pitiful excuse of former greatness, I wouldn’t see the new line up if it was free)
$89 to see the Stones? ROFL
. . .and if you can believe this, fairly early on, Hendrix played warmup for. . .
. . .wait for it. . .
The Monkees.
My dumbest concert decision: Not going to a little-publicized concert in upstate New York back in the 60s because I was in a hurry to get from Boston to Los Angeles.
WOODSTOCK.
$89 for one band (and possi le warmup act?) is obscene, period. The price tag might keep it from selling out, actually.
$89 is steep for a concert. That would pay for a couple tanks of gas for me. But it’s the Stones, man…. I’m tempted to say how much longer are they gonna tour but since they’re in their 60’s and still going stong, we could probably wait another 10 years or so and still see them performing live.
At $89 a ticket, and IF it sells out at 40,000 seats (WE estimate of seating) that is $3,560,000 for a days work.
Granted, there are incredible expenses involved, but that ain’t bad for one day.
Ben,Yours beats mine. You win.
Julie, I remember hearing that Axl Rose was diagnosed with bipolar. Maybe Lithium isn’t conducive to heavy metal rock ‘n roll.
My dumbest decison was to skip Stevie Ray’s last appearance at Antone’s. Who knew he’d be dead shortly thereafter?
I also missed Muddy at his last Antone’s gig too.
The best decision(s) EVERY time I saw John Prine. Especially when he played with Emmy Lou at the Backyard.
And I saw this unknown rock chic at the Austin Music Hall in 1989. She was from ks, and I think her name was Melissa something. Who knew she would become the icon known as Melissa Etheridge.
heheheh.
And I agree DD. Ben STILL wins.
Some great concerts in Central Park in the 60s … one I remember with Jefferson Airplane, 10 Years After, Country Joe and the Fish …
And its 1 2 3 what are we fighting for …
I’ve missed too many great shows to really choose. I guess I would put the first Lollapalooza at the top of the list (Ben, of course, still wins).
I DID see Muddy Waters in ‘81 at the Cotillion. He died not long after that. Helluva show.
Oh, and Julie, I almost–almost!–went to see a up-and-coming metal band in ‘86. But didn’t.
They were called Metallica and, yes, Cliff Burton was still alive. Sigh. . .
I saw Jefferson Airplane in Wichita at the “RoundHouse” when they were promoting their “Volunteers of America” Album. Grace Slick was 9 months pregnant, but still rocking . . . I think it was in 1971.
I saw John Lee Hooker in the 80’s at the Cotillian. I handed my 35mm camera to the girlfriend of a roadie and got back some pretty good available-light B&W photos.
When the former janitor at GM passes on to the great roadhouse in the sky . . . hmmmm
Iron Butterfly, Black Oak Arkansas and a guy on his first tour: John . . . senior moment. It’ll come to me. At the WSU auditorium. Great concert.
Alice Cooper and John Mayall in Oklahoma city. John had Peter Green with him at the time. Alice opened. When Mayall started, half way into the first number, he stopped the band, said turn down the volume; we’re a blues band. Awesome concert.
Spirit at San Diego State University mid-seventies. One of the best groups ever.
Muddy in ‘81 at the Cotillion. Yeah, I was there. You’re right. Helluva a show.
I also saw Isaac Stern at Century II about that time. Both men were geniuses in their respective genres.
Frank Zappa at the Civic Center, also in ‘81. Incredible show.
“Oh, and Julie, I almost–almost!–went to see a up-and-coming metal band in ‘86. But didn’t.
They were called Metallica and, yes, Cliff Burton was still alive. Sigh. . .”
They opened for Ozzy. You didn’t miss a thing. They were completely de-tuned so as not to detract from the headlining has-been.
Hey all, I’m a regular reader that doesn’t usually chime in but I can’t help it. I think the Stones rock, I saw the Steel Wheels tour. This is exciting news for Wcihita. You all DO know about the Wichita Blues Society? …keepin’ the blues alive in Doodah. Anyway, we are having a jam tomorrow night (Thursday) at 7 PM at the Warren in Old Town. Also, we are selling tickets for a FREE cruise, the Legendary Blues Cruise in Oct! I can’t list my email here (work ya know), but if you post that you are interested on the blog I’ll get back with you. Keep the blues alive and support LIVE music!P.S. Hank, I’m sooo jealous!
DD, WAS THAT YOU sitting behind me at the Jefferson Airplane concert!?! I remember the light show, very impressive for that day and age “Volunteers of America”, my favorite song to this day!I hope like heck that I can get tickets to concert..I think you have to be from “our” generation to truly appreciate the fact that The Stones ARE the greatest rock and roll band ever!
Mary,I was sitting on the floor. I paid some serious money, I think it was 5 bucks. The prettiest Garden Plain girl was at my side. It was pretty close to heaven.
I’ll grant you the stones are okay, but the greatest band ever??? I don’t know about that…
Well post again deb. We like to hear from our readers.
The stones? As I said before, before my time. And at 90 bucks a ticket not likely I’ll get to know them any better.
Music references like other things and qualifications on this forum frequently leave me wondering what it is I add here.
Best concert I ever went to? And I’ve not been to many. Chuck Berry and Roy Orbison Kansas Coliseum…….1986 I think. Not many people there. Their loss. I got Orbisons autograph!!
There will never be a voice like that of Roy Orbison.
Oh no…
Mary, what was your madien name? Surely, I am wrong in this time warp. (you know my email address).
Do you remember Grace Slick ridiculing the Wichita police? Did you and your friend recall, I think she may have been Thome girl, just being pretty fed up with your escorts?
Life is too short, to be this funny!
Oh well. It is, what it is…
Deb’Blues cruise? I’m in. my email is good; contact me!!!!
Is this the same blues cruise that Delbert McClinton usually hosts? Seems like the Austin blues crew is usually involved in it, but maybe there is more than one.
No, I did not know about the Wichita blues society. That ROCKS! hehehe no pun intended. Maybe they could do a foreign exchange visit to western kansas?
We have lots of “blues” out here in the draught country. Just not blues of the musical kind.
“Nobody loves me but my mama, and she could be jivin’ too”.
gotta love bb
Um… Wichita….
do you think you could get Clapton to come here next?
Clapton is GOD
Deb, Blues fan here. My email is live. I’m a fan of the Roadhouse. Any way to get dependable info as to what’s going on there on weekends?
Thanks all for your interest in the blues! I’ve emailed you personally in response to your questions. A plug for a friend …
JR,
Don’t feel too left out. Although I’m more than familiar with the bands they’re listing, my concert-going experience was in the 60’s, with only one or two in the early 70’s and none considered “rock.”
Oh, well.
I’ve seen the Beach Boys 4 times. *I* think that counts for something. LOL
While I acknowlege the Stones for the great band they are, I doubt if I’ll go. As JR indicates, $90 is a lot of ka-ching, especially if you take a “friend”. I was never a big Stones fan.
I’m not going to go to see the Stones. Although they are my generation, the most durable rock band ever and I’d really like to see them; I just don’t want to put up with that many people in one place. I’ll ask them out to the house instead.
However, Jimmy Buffet is still on my things to do again list. I’ve got some clothes that I can only wear to a Jimmy Buffet concert and I need to wear them a few more times to get my money’s worth.
Now, if you like good guitar playing, well I mean great guitar playing, oh hell, one of the best players I know! Then you need to go to the Prairie Rose and eat all the barbeque you can hold and then be entertained by the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Band!
Joyce and I have been there several times and they are always better than we expect! Stu (lead guitar, fiddle and lead vocals) is the best guitar player I have seen in a long time.
Hank
Parrothead!
Oh, wait, that’s not an insult. . . ;-)
Hank is always a surprise, isn’t he?
Yep.
I hope the feeling that Stones tickets are too costly don’t force Wichitans not to go, its out of towners filling Cessna stadium would hurt.
I don’t know expenses of some people but cable and cell phone costs are a waste of money to me. So is high speed internet, I’ve been on dialup since the net connections began, late 80’s. Every nickel saved from those costs, I get to attend a rare concert, with somebody.
It’s not the Stones I want to see, its Wichitans out and about in that size of people cheering and enjoying those moments. The Stones new music, I have no interest in. I’ll be people watching. I’ll take a seat farthest from the south end stage. Doesn’t matter to me, I just want to hear the noise.
I hope Wichita can do something that weekend to throw ourselves parties in the streets. Get everyone out and about, should be foods for all to enjoy. Downtown should hop those three days. Monday a city wide shut down for many just because, its a rare event.
Death,That’s because Keith is immortal. =)He’ll last longer than you will.
I like the Doors better though.
DD, My maiden name was Mary Cleary. I remember Grace talking about how good the pot smelled.I remember some guy dancing in the aisle and everyone telling him to sit down.I remember the light show, that’s about it. I know it was a good concert.
