Must be nice to stay home! I’m out in it all day long. The problem with driving an economy car is that the ACs don’t always work very well, something that car manufacturers need to be aware of now that smaller cars are in demand due to the price of fuel. My next car will be a hybrid, I hear they get about 60 miles to the gallon, I hope their ACs work better than the one I have now!

Unfortunately, part of what you give up for economy is power. It takes a surprising amount of power to drive the air conditioner compressor in a car. With the newer “environmentally friendly” refrigerants, the situation doesn’t improve. There’s a reason the “bad stuff”, R-12 came into almost universal usage. It was a very efficient refrigerant.

I just converted my 1986 Lincoln to the newer R-134A. It cools the car eventually, but it’s not as cold as R-14. For anybody considering converting an older car (older than 1994), check around. The repair shop quoted $1000 to do the conversion. I bought a kit for $75 and did it myself. It’s pretty simple, only requires that you know what a wrench is, and how to read a guage (my kit came with a very simple instructional CD). The whole process consists of screwing on 2 valve adaptors and putting in the new refrigerant. Your local AC shop will probably remove what R-14 is left in your system at little or no charge, as the stuff is valuable.

I saved $925 and kept a beautiful old Lincoln in service.

I wouldn’t pay $1000 to convert. Dang! Talk about a rip off. Care to tell me what repair shop quoted you that price so I can avoid them?

For maitenance I can’t do myself due to a lack of a garage, a lift, and special tools, I’m in the market to locate a good mechanic.

I used to have one that was very reasonable, very honest, and quick on servic. But he closed his shop last year to work for Cessna in an engineering position.

    Any suggestions.

Joe, it was Midas (they were close by). They wanted to replace the compressor, dryer, and expansion chamber. Like you, I’m not about to pay $1000. I also do most of my own maintenance. I have a garage and every tool known to man, including my own machine shop, lol. I don’t have a lot of AC experience, but at those prices, I can learn.

I pose a question: What will the US do if Lebanon does not allow enemy military flights or ships to enter Lebanon to evacuate the 25,000 US civilians trapped there? Might those civilians evacuate by the route so many others have done – overland to Syria? Then what happens if Syria refuses to allows ITS enemies entrance?

Would the United States allow enemy military to enter our country in a time of war?

Yikes, well so much for shub’s “economic miracle”.

US ‘could be going bankrupt’By Edmund Conway, Economics Editor

    (Filed: 14/07/2006)

The United States is heading for bankruptcy, according to an extraordinary paper published by one of the key members of the country’s central bank.

A ballooning budget deficit and a pensions and welfare timebomb could send the economic superpower into insolvency, according to research by Professor Laurence Kotlikoff for the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis, a leading constituent of the US Federal Reserve.

Prof Kotlikoff said that, by some measures, the US is already bankrupt. “To paraphrase the Oxford English Dictionary, is the United States at the end of its resources, exhausted, stripped bare, destitute, bereft, wanting in property, or wrecked in consequence of failure to pay its creditors,” he asked.

According to his central analysis, “the US government is, indeed, bankrupt, insofar as it will be unable to pay its creditors, who, in this context, are current and future generations to whom it has explicitly or implicitly promised future net payments of various kinds”.

The budget deficit in the US is not massive. The Bush administration this week cut its forecasts for the fiscal shortfall this year by almost a third, saying it will come in at 2.3pc of gross domestic product. This is smaller than most European countries – including the UK – which have deficits north of 3pc of GDP.

Prof Kotlikoff, who teaches at Boston University, says: “The proper way to consider a country’s solvency is to examine the lifetime fiscal burdens facing current and future generations. If these burdens exceed the resources of those generations, get close to doing so, or simply get so high as to preclude their full collection, the country’s policy will be unsustainable and can constitute or lead to national bankruptcy.

“Does the United States fit this bill? No one knows for sure, but there are strong reasons to believe the United States may be going broke.”

Experts have calculated that the country’s long-term “fiscal gap” between all future government spending and all future receipts will widen immensely as the Baby Boomer generation retires, and as the amount the state will have to spend on healthcare and pensions soars. The total fiscal gap could be an almost incomprehensible $65.9 trillion, according to a study by Professors Gokhale and Smetters.

The figure is massive because President George W Bush has made major tax cuts in recent years, and because the bill for Medicare, which provides health insurance for the elderly, and Medicaid, which does likewise for the poor, will increase greatly due to demographics.

Prof Kotlikoff said: “This figure is more than five times US GDP and almost twice the size of national wealth. One way to wrap one’s head around $65.9trillion is to ask what fiscal adjustments are needed to eliminate this red hole. The answers are terrifying. One solution is an immediate and permanent doubling of personal and corporate income taxes. Another is an immediate and permanent two-thirds cut in Social Security and Medicare benefits. A third alternative, were it feasible, would be to immediately and permanently cut all federal discretionary spending by 143pc.”

The scenario has serious implications for the dollar. If investors lose confidence in the US’s future, and suspect the country may at some point allow inflation to erode away its debts, they may reduce their holdings of US Treasury bonds.

Prof Kotlikoff said: “The United States has experienced high rates of inflation in the past and appears to be running the same type of fiscal policies that engendered hyperinflations in 20 countries over the past century.”

Paul Ashworth, of Capital Economics, was more sanguine about the coming retirement of the Baby Boomer generation. “For a start, the expected deterioration in the Federal budget owes more to rising per capita spending on health care than to changing demographics,” he said.

“This can be contained if the political will is there. Similarly, the expected increase in social security spending can be controlled by reducing the growth rate of benefits. Expecting a fix now is probably asking too much of short-sighted politicians who have no incentives to do so. But a fix, or at least a succession of patches, will come when the problem becomes more pressing.”http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2006/07/14/cnusa14.xml&menuId=242&sSheet=/money/2006/07/14/ixcity.html

We are getting more and more and more posters on the forum here lately. Now MOST of them seem to know blogging and may be being drawn here from other sites. A few seem totally new to the “game” and have found us here.

I’d like to make special note of a completely new poster I saw the other day. His nic was JeffinKS and he posted that he was a long time reader and first time poster. This was on a kind of backwater thread. So it did not get much attention. It would be interesting to know the thoughts of Jeff or any other of our readers.

New posters should be acknowledged and welcomed.

All this makes me wonder if this blog is still the number 2 newspaper blog for posts or have we surpassed the Dave Barry blog by now?

    Ian,

Regarding your posting about the country going bankrupt, i have been saying this for years.

I have seen/heard some people that theorize that when our debt payment spending becomes more than what we spend on the entire rest of the budget, our country will implode on itself.

I wonder what will happen when the deficit hits 10 Trillion. Do U think the republicans will keep touting their “Cut Taxes, increase spending”?

It was done very well. Not the impeding doom, corporations, Bush,(with the expection of the Kyoto stint), only the USA is contributing fault.

I also thought it was fair when the scientist also had some surprises in reverse. Such as the depth of root growth in the Amazon, their acknowledgment of natural warming cycles. That just tells me that this documentary was fair and balance. I suspect, although I haven’t watch Gore’s version, that it’s much better than Gore’s.

The Discovery Channel puts out great stuff.

As far as my carbon footprint. I have converted all lights to fluorescent years ago. For personal purposes I drive a small car. I have used the city bus and biked to work in the past. I turn off the A/C and Heat when not at home.

Some things I should start doing. Unplugging TVs and the computer when not in use. 40% energy use during standby? I would have to look at how it does it, but I’m sure that it’s a possiblity.

I saw the Discovery Channel show on Global Warming. I’m sure the non-believers will again claim there is a “controversy” in the science. This is their typical approach, discredit the science if it doesn’t agree with their beliefs (or in this case, financial interests). This has also been their Rovian tactic in their attempt to discredit evolution, make up a “controversy”. In the global warming/climate change issue, changes must begin right now. We (The USA) must take the world lead to change our lifestyles/practices to be more environmental friendly. We all have to see through the “Clear Skies Initiative”, “Healthy Forests” and the like as political paybacks to campaign contributors. The problem of climate change is real and only we can repair the damage we have already done.

I saw some of the Global Warming movie. I’m now convinced.

Starting today I’m going to take measures to reduce my ‘carbon footprint’.

First thing I’m doing is reducing my toilet paper from 5 squares per wipe to 3 squares per wipe. According to the ’science’ in the movie, it whould reduce my footprint by approximately 1.4 tons.

    14 Warning signs of Fascism

    1. Powerful and continuing expressions of nationalism.2. Disdain for the importance of human rights.3. Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause.4. The supremacy of the military/avid militarism.5. Domestic spying.6. A controlled mass media.7. Obsession with national security.8. Religion and ruling elite tied together.9. Power of corporations protected.10. Power of labor suppressed or eliminated.11. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts.12. “Normal” and political crime were often merged into trumped-up criminal charges and sometimes used against political opponents of the regime.13. Rampant cronyism and corruption.14. Fraudulent elections.

    For elaboration:http://yellowcakewalk.backpackit.com/pub/412314

I saw this list at a deli called “The Reyus Ave. Bakery” in Laveta, CO while on vacation. The woman who runs it is French and has the most extensive collection of anti-Bush posters, etc. that I have ever seen.

The owner of the business has that Parisian attitude that it almost troubles her to take your money, but she has the best food I have eaten in a long time. She is not open every day and at lunch time, lines snake out for a long ways into the street.

Her business also serves as an art gallery for local artists.

Just thought I’d share this message which is difficult to understand where it might have come from. :-)

The Discovery channel documentary was very well done. The explanations of carbon cycle. etc, was convincing. One problem I had with it, though, was the narrator was very careful in saying “some scientists; many scientists”, then only giving the side of the scientists who supported global warming. I would have felt more comfortable if the other “some other scientists” who had doubts would have been interviewed.

Were their views ignored for a reason? With two hours to do the show, I think they could have been included. Perhaps in later shows, this can be addressed. In my opinion, all sides should be held up to the light; then, and only then, can reasonable people make reasonable decisions.

I’m gonna toss out an idea and see what y’all think.Since we’ve had all the blog meet-ups in or around Wichita – how ’bout if we make our next meet up at KFG’s restaurant as paying customers? She’s made the trip for us — how ’bout if we make the trip for her?

I had that idea too. Maybe carpools and stuff…….gas is murder. That might get TRACY to a meetup too.

now your just dreaming JR – either that or your on the ‘good’ drugs and aren’t sharing with the rest of us. :)(I am in no way shape or form insinuating that JR is a druggie with that last statement – it’s a joke folks)

    Hey Julie,

I think they read what we say some, just not regular.

I’m all for a road trip, it’s just that August is a big month for me and herding. I have a friend in Osbourne that I would like to show my new pup to, I’ll see if a weekend in August works out for him.

I get an e-mail update of the votes from Washington. thought I would pass it along.Upcoming VotesFetus Farming Prohibition Act of 2006 – S.3504

During a week of debate on several stem cell bills, the Senate will consider this bill that would prohibit the practice of deliberately initiating a human pregnancy to obtain fetal cells or tissues.

——————————————————————————–Alternative Pluripotent Stem Cell Therapies Enhancement Act – S.2754

This bill would promote research into stem cells that are not derived from fetuses.

——————————————————————————–Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act – H.R.810

The Senate is scheduled to take up this House bill that would require the Department of Health and Human Services to support and promote research on human embryonic stem cells.

    ——————————————————————————–Marriage Protection Amendment – H.J.Res.88

The House is scheduled to take up this proposal to amend the Constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

    ——————————————————————————–Pledge Protection Act – H.R.2389

This House bill would give each state the authority to decide the constitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance rather than the federal courts.

——————————————————————————–U.S.-Oman Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act – H.R.5684

The House is set to vote on this pact establishing a free-trade zone with the Middle East nation of Oman.

I know some seem to be dated, but I check and I received this today.Comment: It hit me the the thought that States would be given the power to decide the constitutionality of anything. This is the job of the SCOTUS. To give such power to the state is a dangious thought and violates the very principals of this country.

I am laughing so hard I cant breathe. You guys are too much.

I would SO MUCH love to have any and all come to Collyer and hopefully take a side trip to visit my little piece of heaven on my farm.

The people here are just amazing and we are having fun at the restaurant. The menu changes weekly, but there are a few standards.

If y’all want shrimp scampi, you got it. I lived on the Gulf Coast so I eat it over rice, but Walker, just for you, I’ll get the pasta pot boiling. Peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce on the menu.

Good grief. I sound like grandpa on Hee Haw. You know, “hey grandpa, what’s for supper?”

RD, it is a full time job just being open three days. Tonight was the “Monday night leftover club” where we scarfed the leftover salsa, chips and shrimp and there was sangria to help us all relax after the weekend.

    It worked. heheheh

I would love to do something special for anyone who makes the drive out here. I promise it will be worth it.

Delbert McClinton “Doin’ my best to get back to you, aint nothin’ I’d rather do. Look for me honey I’m gonna be there Sunday with sumpin special just for you”.

Tell the hostess you are a blogger and I’ll whip up “sumpin special just for you”.

    heheheh

I can promise Joyce and I will be there, just can’t promise when.

    Debert McClinton?

“Her love has no strings, shackles or chainsBut I’m holding on for dear lifeShe’s like rolling a sevenEverytime I roll the dice”

    Love him!

Heheh hank, and you know who he did that duet with? Melissa Etheridge, another kansas lesbo.

I love rocked enough too. I had knee surgery years ago when Delbert played one time in Austin, and I was so disappointed that I couldnt go. All my buddies got him to sign that CD for me and took it to the hospital. I still have it and an autographed pic on display at my house.

Delbert at Antone’s with Ruby’s BBQ at 3am. Sigh. Oh to be young and unjaded again.

OMG, I have a vision of all these guys and gals showing up at my restaurant with t-shirts that say “western ks lesbo” and singing Delbert.

    hee hee hee.

The only thing that could make it MORE perfect would be for the WE Blog trio to perform. CF? Rage? I’ll make it worth your while. It sounds like gster and a few others might want to join the jam.

Our next project in Collyer is to restore the old Zeman Dance Hall in Collyer. When I was in high school, there would be over a thousand people at the Collyer dances, and only 200 could fit inside.

heheh. Once could learn about life and love at the Collyer dances. You know what they say, if you remember the collyer dances, you weren’t really there…

heheh. And we also sell t-shirts that say “I survived the Collyer Dances” and on the back it lists all the bands that used to play. 007’s, blue things, KANSAS (for 50 cents admission) jimmy dee, etc.

    Kfg?

Just a thought here. (I have one now and again, ususally nobody gets hurt!)

If I am a trucker on I-70, “the Collyer Cafe 2 miles” gets my attention.

Then again, if I am a trucker on I-70 driving all alone for hours and hours over the lonely vastness my attention is positively GRABBED by ” Farmgrrls! 2 miles”

    Just a thought.

Hank – it IS true that SOME scientists are whores – we saw that with the tobacco industry whores years ago swearing to Congress that there was no consensus on health issues and now with the energy industry whores today doing precisely the same thing.
