Would you pay $30 to see Neil Sedaka?

Wichita Festivals Inc. released its three band finalists for the Wichita Flight Festival in August, and any of them would work fine: Blues Traveler (the front-runner, according to Janet Wright), Kool and the Gang (‚”Ce-le-braaa-tion, come on!”) and the Commodores (er, not featuring Lionel Richie).
Wright said officials were looking for a “party band” rather than a sit-down for the Friday night event, which will cost $30.
The full list of 80 band options published in The Eagle raises some questions.
Eddie Money is really “not available” on that date? That’s hard to believe. Seems like he would be needing a gig. Same for Christopher Cross.
It was annoying, too, that Mr. Heartland, John Mellencamp, said he was “not interested” in the gig. What’s with that?
Whatever, it’s good that festival officials aren’t repeating with something like last year’s cover band of ABBA tunes. Wright admitted that didn’t go over too well.
I’m still holding out for Wayne Newton. Rock the house.

How about that Shania Twain tribute act who “sang” the last night of Riverfest before the fireworks? She was more inadvertently awesome than anything I’ve heard in quite some time. My kid and I were beside ourselves.

Why didn’t they try for the Red Headed Stranger? Everybody loves Willie.

Maybe people in Wichita dont want to hear willie sing “cowboys are frequently, secretly, fond of each other”

Man, was values boy in trouble today or what! I mean, it is only his third column, and if he has to trot out ted kennedy as the boogy man for WICHITA fer god’s sake, he must be scraping the bottom of the barrel. The WE must be so proud.

Cant wait for the next installment of his scintillating intellect and wit. Not to mention his fabulous jr high writing skills.

Squinting to see teddy as the boogy man? Pure desperation.

How about squinting to see the point of values boy’s latest banality? Squinting to see whatever tiny, small minded, bigoted point he might make. But it is obvious he is a cheerleader for whiney fundies, so no squinting required.

Hell, he’s PROUD of his bigotry, and if you question him on it? He will cry like a little girl (sorry to little girls) about how he is part of a poor, (sniff) persecuted (sniff) MAJORITY for cryin’ out loud.

He has written, what, three columns and TWO were about the horrors that will befall us, how civilization as we know it will collapse if hate amendments do not pass to appease the voracious appetite for bigotry of his religious jihad buddies.

The conservative base type beast must be constantly fed, ya know, and demands more and more human sacrifice before finally devouring the very hands that feed it. Go ahead Brent, stick your hand in the cage and offer up a few queers. The blood will wash off.

Predictable and trite, and not even any points for a clever phrase or two.

    Nice job.

SO… values boy… tell me AGAIN that ALL the hate amendments are NOT religious jihads! heheh.

He is a characature of himself and the more he spins about his “religious freedoms” the more we see his real agenda. Keep writing dude, and you could raise almost as much money and support for the gay community as your idol, that oh so righteous fred phelps.

Keep publishing his high quality, insightful writing, WE, and maybe even terry, joe and FRED will be ashamed of values boy. You who hire him obivously have NONE.

Would any other columnist get away with such shoddy premises or juvenille writing?

Not if the WE wanted to maintain any credibility. But instead, they pander to the taliban. Journalism and writing standards be damned, the WE is rolling over for terry and fred the way the phone companies rolled over for buschco.

    How’s that working for THEM?

Castillo must be part of the WE’s affirmative action program for the poor persecuted majority, the kansas taliban.

Cant he get a job without special treatment? ’cause if anyone else did such a bad job…

I agree KFG, Brent Castillo is the WE’s attempt to pander to the fundies. They’ve (the fundies)been whining for years about the “liberal” media, now they have their own Hannity/O’Reilley/Limbaugh/Coulter on the Editorial Board. I guess we should treat him as irrelevant.

That was a long stretch for you KSFG. You took an article on bands and turned it into one of your raving off the wall antics on gays. At least stay on the subject.

You just cannot get over the vote of the majority of the people in Kansas. They do not support same sex marriages. It does not translate into (as you want it to) a hate for gays. It is about support for traditional family values. It is nothing more and nothing less.

People are not happy about gays and many times they are uncomfortable around them but that does not translate into the hate that you spit out on a regular basis. You are totally disrespectful of anyone that disagrees with your view point and many times very hateful while doing so. Outside of the Phelps family (which I have no respect for) there is not another group out there bashing the gay community like you bash people.

You really need to take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself if you are really happy with the person that speaks such hatred as you do about others. People can disagree with one another without the hate. To call someone the Taliban or Jihads is way off base.

You show great disrespect for religion. If you do not believe in a religion that is fine but stop bashing those that do. This country was based on religion and our forefathers died to see that we had freedoms. Castillo is not hiding from what he wants to say. You keep trying to convince everyone that he has a hidden agenda. I think he speaks pretty straight forward.

If someone bashed you the way you bashed others you would we be bouncing off of the walls. I’m sure you are not going to like reading what has been said here but it is the truth and I would suggest that if you really feel the need to be so hateful that you write it down once then read it and put it in the trash and start all over. You may be a very nice person but it does not show in what you put in print. You cannot be taken seriously on a topic when you speak so hateful.

With his lack of ability and parroting the thoughts of others, SURELY someone is giving him his talking points. Joe? Terry? Fred? Brent? The NEW four horsemen of hate.

It would be really funny if it wasnt such a sad commentary on the WE’s standards for columnists.

“You just cannot get over the vote of the majority of the people in Kansas. They do not support same sex marriages.”

Gosh ruby, and since that is true, maybe you could enlighten us here.

How does it feel to know that gay marriage has higher approval ratings (44-46%) than your republican leader, the standard bearer of the GOP, preznit bush? His approval ratings are at least ten points lower at 33-34 percent.

So no matter how you spin that keeping the queers out of sight and out of mind is a good thing for you… isnt it funny that no matter how many people you think disapprove of gays…

….MORE PEOPLE DISAPPROVE OF THE PREZNIT AND REPUBLICAN CONTROL OF CONGRESS!

And maybe you could also tell us, from the KANSAS gop perspective, how it feels to know that a liberal democrat like governor leadership is gonna kick the ass of the conservative, wingnut republicans AGAIN for another four.more.years?

Could you tell us how THAT makes ya feel ruby girl?

Reading this blog for the last year, I could name you a dozen people who may or may not have a journalistic education all of whom are better written than Brent the beav. Known liberal that I am, the first misconception that will jump into the mind of the reader here is “Yeah, they’d all be liberals” Nope. I can name a handful of moderate conservatives who can write something better than the fourth grade theme quality crap that Castillo calls a column. Funny joe. I especially liked these parts:

“In contrast, the band’s new album, “Taking the Long Way,” sold 526,000 units in its first week, according to Nielsen Soundscan, the third-largest sales week of 2006. The album logged a second week in the period ended June 4, according to sales data issued Wednesday.

Despite those numbers, early ticket sales are clearly not meeting projections. The plug was pulled on public on-sales for shows in Indianapolis (August 23), Oklahoma City (September 26), Memphis (September 27) and Houston (September 30) because of tepid pre-sales in a national promotion with Target stores.

The Memphis show has been pulled off the route and the status of the shows in Indianapolis, Houston and Oklahoma City remains uncertain.

    (Snip)

But not all shows on this tour are below projections. “We’re happy (with our on-sale) and comparatively seem to be ahead of most,” says John Page, Global Spectrum COO/GM at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, where the trio is booked for July 25. A second date was added for the Air Canada Center in Toronto, where the first show sold out in eight minutes.”

Gee, the shows in redneck country music places like Memphis, OKC, NASCAR dominated Indianapolis, and HOUSTON, the home of bushco, are being canceled?

    Say it isnt so.

But the shows in philly and canada are selling out at a good clip?

Gee joe, you dont think the nature of their audience has CHANGED do ya? OF course the rednecks arent buying the tickets and the more sophisticated urbanites ARE buying the tickets. No surprise there.

Doesnt seem like the chicks would be too anxious to try and sell out ANOTHER cow town like, say, Wichita.

Not when their real audiences love them, sell out shows in eight minutes, and help them set records for album sales.

    I love that link!!!!!!

Does that make their message any less hateful? I think not. Give me a straight up and honest hater any day. These pseudo christian haters are waaaaaaayyyyy more dangerous. Like a silent snake.

Does anyone but me wonder if values boy sits in on the WE editorial meetings?

Or does he operate independently? I mean, independently other than shilling for the taliban.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when he starts spouting his crap in front of the real journalists.

How can phillip post a thread like “GOP believes in federalism (except when the religious right tells it not to)” comment on the term “values” as used with values boy, (thank you phillip) and then look at that guy, masquerading as a writer, across the table?

How can randy even stand to be in the same room with values boy?

I would love to be a fly on the wall. But then, maybe there is no discussion or dissent at all. Maybe the oh so righteous bosses at the WE have sent down the word from Olympus.

“Leave values boy alone! He is god’s own messenger, and besides, terry, joe and fred will not be happy if you pick on him”.

Hee hee. If I were a REAL journalist? I would be TOTALLY offended by the publishing of values boy.

Acting like he is a real writer when they have a whole STAFF of professionals. Then they bring in an amature like values boy and try to pass him off as credible?

I’d not wish the experience on anyone (well I might but I wouldn’t admit it) but you would have to had my perspective. That snake analogy is almost painfully good. In the movies, you always see a rattler do a quick strike. In my experience, that copperhead latched on and chewed. It is fair to note that I stepped on him first. But I definitely got the worst of it. Ow.

Maybe one reason the WE does not acknowledge us bloggers much is that some of us (not me) are better writers than some of them? I speculated to that before.

I also mentioned that they used to run excerpts from the blog and then stopped. Right after I mentioned that, they posted one again. Reminder time?—–
Glad you liked the link. Just wanted to share that. Nothing partison about it.

Just saying, there might be room for them to play here.

“Authored by American diplomat Joel Barlow in 1796, the following treaty was sent to the floor of the Senate, June 7, 1797, where it was read aloud in its entirety and unanimously approved. John Adams, having seen the treaty, signed it and proudly proclaimed it to the Nation.”Need the link?http://www.stephenjaygould.org/ctrl/treaty_tripoli.html

I understand why KFG likes to reference terry, joe, and fred so much.

After reading her streaming rants, it has become perfectly clear. Certainly in fred’s case. I’m less certain terry and joe deserve to be in there; hell, Satan himself doesn’t want to be seen with fred. But certainly fred fits better than any of the three.

Why is she so taken with fred?

    Because she’s just like him.

In tactics, if not in ideology. Full of hate, spewing nothing but venom, recognizing NO world view, NO point of view, as reasonable or legitimate except hers. Nearly every thread, no matter the subject, SSDD. In that respect, just like Ed and Ian. And fred, if he wrote here (No, that is not an invitation!!!).
