What the right wing rocks out to

Here are some tunes to get the party started — the Republican Party. National Review’s list of the “50 greatest conservative rock songs” takes some labeling liberties and covers a lot of musical ground, from the Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” (No. 1) to Blink 182’s “Stay Together for the Kids” (No. 17) to Aerosmith’s “Janie’s Got a Gun” (No. 28) to Sammy Hagar’s “I Can’t Drive 55″ (No. 38) to Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” (No. 50).

How ironic that they like The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, as I believe the lyrics were aimed at (and against) people just like them.

I’ll have to check it out.

I listened to it from my Dad’s audiotape collection when I was growing up. I bought that song as part of a collection on CD for him not long ago – just cause he doesn’t have a tape player in his truck anymore. ;)

I ain’t nothing but a simple manCall me a redneck, I reckon that I amBut there’s things goin’ on that make me mad down to the coreI have to work like a dog to make ends meetThere’s crooked politicians and crime in the streetAnd I’m madder than hell and I ain’t gonna take it no moreWe tell our kids to just say noAnd then some panty waist judge lets a drug dealer goAnd he slaps him on the wrist and he turns him back out on the townWell, if I had my way with people sellin’ dopeI’d take a big tall tree and a short piece of ropeAnd hang ‘em up high and let ‘em swing till the sun goes down

Chorus:Well you know what’s wrong with the world todayPeople done gone and put their Bibles awayThere livin’ by law of the jungle not the law of the landWell the good book says it, so I know it’s the truthAn eye for an eye and a tooth for a toothYou’d better watch where you goAnd remember where you’ve beenThat’s the way I see it I’m a simple man

    Want more?

Love is but a song we singAnd fear’s the way we die.You can make the mountains ringOr make the angels cry.Though the bird is on the wingAnd you may not know why.C’mon people nowSmile on your brotherEv’rybody get togetherTry to love one another right now

Some will come and some will goAnd we shall surely pass. When the one that left us hereReturns for us at last.We are but a moment’s sunlightFading in the grass.C’mon people nowSmile on your brotherEv’rybody get togetherTry to love one another right nowIf you hear the song we singYou will understand. You hold the key to love and fearIn your trembling hand.Just one key unlocks them bothIt’s there at your commandC’mon people nowSmile on your brotherEv’rybody get togetherTry to love one another right now

I promise to stop in a minute. :) The previous was Come Together by the Youngbloods.

But maybe the post appropriate for the right might be:

    I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die-Rag

Oh this is, this is just a try out. It’s not …’Fixin’-To-Die-Rag’, ‘Fixin’-To-Die-Rag’, Take 1.

One, two, three, four.Well, come on all of you, big strong men,Uncle Sam needs your help again.Yeah, he’s got himself in a terrible jamWay down yonder in VietnamSo put down your books and pick up a gun,Gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it’s one, two, three,What are we fighting for ?Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,Next stop is Vietnam; And it’s five, six, seven,Open up the pearly gates,Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,Whoopee! we’re all gonna die.

Yeah, come on Wall Street, don’t be slow,Why man, this is war au-go-goThere’s plenty good money to be madeBy supplying the Army with the tools of its trade,Just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,They drop it on the Viet Cong.

And it’s one, two, three,What are we fighting for ?Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,Next stop is Vietnam. And it’s five, six, seven,Open up the pearly gates,Well there ain’t no time to wonder whyWhoopee! we’re all gonna die.

Well, come on generals, let’s move fast;Your big chance has come at last. Now you can go out and get those reds’Cause the only good commie is the one that’s deadAnd you know that peace can only be wonWhen we’ve blown ‘em all to kingdom come.

And it’s one, two, three,What are we fighting for ?Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,Next stop is Vietnam; And it’s five, six, seven,Open up the pearly gates,Well there ain’t no time to wonder whyWhoopee! we’re all gonna die.

Come on mothers throughout the land,Pack your boys off to Vietnam.Come on fathers, and don’t hesitateTo send your sons off before it’s too late. You can be the first ones in your blockTo have your boy come home in a box.

And it’s one, two, threeWhat are we fighting for ?Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn,Next stop is Vietnam. And it’s five, six, seven,Open up the pearly gates,Well there ain’t no time to wonder why,Whoopee! we’re all gonna die.

XXX, what can I say? I’m hooked on Oldies. Those 60’s protest songs still ring in my ears, and each time I hear one on the radio, I get weepy. I wasn’t a part of the scene back then. That’s what happens to many rural teens. But I did know what was going on, and I did know those songs were speaking the truth. Now that I’m over 30, and in this day and age, I don’t trust anyone breathing.
