Time to close prison PR nightmare?

Our editorial today gets at the problem with the Guantanamo Bay prison, in the wake of last weekend’s three detainee suicides: Terrorist suspects “can’t be held indefinitely, without charge, without damaging our image abroad and undermining the very values we’re fighting to defend. As soon as possible, the administration should present its evidence against those detainees it believes are guilty of serious, specific crimes. The rest could be repatriated to their home countries or, if judged still dangerous, moved to some other holding facility until their legal status can be clarified.”
The sooner we close Gitmo, the sooner we deny the enemy this powerful propaganda tool.

    Actually Rhonda,

More objective reporting by the mainstream media would deny the enemy “this powerful propaganda tool.”

Regular visits by the Red Cross in accordance with requirements of international law would bring forth the truth about conditions there – for good or for bad. Secrecy breeds conspiricy theories.

    Hankie-Poo,

To your usual mantra of ‘nothing to see here’ we can now add ’shoot the messenger.’

We should not close Guantanamo Bay prison because it is a public relations nightmare, but because it is the right thing to do.

That is what America used to strive for, before the likes of the neoconservatives and their Zionist Israeli friends, which they admire so much, have been leading America away from its core values.

It is time to tell the whole sorry lot of them to go to Hell, and be dead serious about it.

    Ben,

I have called you out on your lies before and here you are spreading them again.

What proof do you have that the Red Cross doesn’t have access to the detainees?

    Please show us.

I have shown you what they have said on their own website Ben:

    http://www.redcross.org/news/in/intllaw/guantanamo1.html

Your continued lies and deciept about the Red Cross not having access is getting old.

    Rhonda,

The only propaghanda er…I mean news I see on Gitmo is from news sources like you here in America.

As soon as you start reporting the truth about things instead of all the accusations perhaps it wouldn’t look so bad?

In that case nathan their visits need to be publicized more.

    Don’t worry Ben,

If the IRC found a terorist with a hangnail at Gitmo the story would be above the fold on the NYT the nest day.

Looks like Ed beat me to it. An unfortunate choice of headline, Rhonda.

    It’s not a “PR nightmare”; it’s a nightmare, period.

“Oh just turn them all loose to kill more people, that would be so easy.”

Why are they being held, Heckler? Don’t say they’re “terrorists”; they held a couple of Afghani satirist for 3 years before letting them go, no explanation or apology.

Habeus corpus dates back to 1215. Gitmo is 12th-century “justice.”

12th-century “justice.” – that is shockingly modern, if you’re a dominionist.

They’ll likely not kill us if we’re not there. Better chance of killing us if we are. They’ve had all of us they can stand.

It would be a real shame if Guantanamo burned down and anyone got seriously hurt there? It is not like the filth there was terrorists who sought to destroy all of us.

If Guantanamo burns down then the liberals will be back to attacking our domestic prison system for not giving the prisoners all the movie channles on the Dish Network instead of the basic family pack.

Rhonda Holman, why don’t you and each of the members of the Editorial Board each sponsor a terrorist suspect and let them live at your houses until the war ends. I sure they would appreciate it and repay you.

I’d argue that “Gitmo” should remain open.

Now hold on justa minute.Let me qualify that. I want the imprisoned there either accused and justifiably prosecuted of a crime or released.

I want “gitmo” to remain open to house those who deny American citizens and others equal justice under law.

If it is the vacation paradise that Rush Limbaugh and his ditto head followers call it then let us SEND THEM THERE!

What say you Hank, Nathan, Heckler and Right angle? How about some beach time with Rush, Hannity, and bush in the resort at GITMO?

In the original Gitmo population there was a 10 year old, a 12 year old and two 15 year olds. Under pressure from the press, the 10 year old, who wanted to just be sent back to his mom and dad, was. The whereabouts of the 12 year old are unknown. The two fifteen years olds are now 19 year olds, and are being held as “adults”.

This is the sickness of war-instigated barbarism.

Every prisoner in Gitmo is a potential enemy; Those that weren’t when they were imprisoned sure as hell are now. Who needs Osama when we do such a great job of creating our own enemies?
