Now that costs are slowly coming in on the arena and the site is known and real estate costs are known — LETS GIVE SEDGWICK COUNTY VOTERS THE TRUTH AND LET THEM VOTE ONCE AND FOR ALL ON WHETHER OR NOT THEY WANT TO SPEND THE $ 1/4 BILLION DOLLARS ($250,000,000) ON ANOTHER WHITE ELEPHANT ICE HOCKEY DOWNTOWN ARENA.

I still like my name for it “Albino Pachyderm VI”, the logic that if we can not fill and make a go of the existing attractions . To build another even larger attraction will solve the problem, sorry you lost me!The argument that the coliseum was not large enough to attract big name performers and sports events, when you can not even fill the smaller forum. I could understand if they were having to turn people away, then building a larger building would make sense. But that is not the case, no the answer is it just is not big enough so more seats…more seats! We have too many empty seats so we need more seats!

Bull Shannon from “Night court ” said it best, “Will I understand this when I grow up?”.

    Jwink, writerdog,Good morning all.

It’s all about the legacy. People in power want this space monster, white elephant, “Albino Pachyderm VI”, built so they can pass down to generations their legacy. Great-grandkids can come into town and marvel at the waste glorified by their past descendents. They can shake their heads at how the people of the time it was built had no say in the matter.

Of course, they will still be wearing disguises, because owners of white elephants never forget, And what they won’t forget is how the people, after living for years with a quarter billion clump of concrete no one wanted to go to, voted to tar, feather, and run out of town on the rails the ones responsible for the monstrosity.

…and how would susan wagle make a living if a casino were to be built? No kidding, she will NEVER let anyone out of her bingo parlors. Once a monopoly profiteer, always a monopoly profiteer.

Dont even THINK about voting for a casino while she “represents” you all. Maybe she and big jim will carry wichita just so they can get her out of office and replace her with a REAL legislator. You know, the type that actually LISTEN to their constituents and WANT people to vote on things.

Ya know, years ago, I voted for liquor by the drink; not because I drink (I don’t), but I had hopes that if we had it, we could attract better musicians and comedians. It never happened. Casinos most likely won’t bring good entertainment either, just glitzy slot machines.

    DING DING DING DING DING.

    MEME ALERT!! MEME ALERT!!!

Nice try on the hate meme. More “black is white and up is down” from the RNC talking points and the kkkarl rove playbook of painting your opponent with YOUR weakness. I think I have been calling this meme, in all it’s incarnations, all week.

Heheheh Nice Try. I oppose hate and the hate amendment and haters who hate like terry, joe, and FRED (hi gmc) so what do nathan and outie and gmc and their ilk do?

heheh Paint ME as the hater. Yep. White is black and up is down. Farmie opposes hate, so let’s call her a hater until it sticks. Hell, ya even roped DD in on that one. And ya roped tracy in on the angry woman meme.

Well, even a stopped clock is right twice a day. You are bound to fool a few before the meme bell gets rung.

Not gonna work. We see the meme and know the strategy. Heheh. Turn it around and make her the hater. Heheheh. ROLLING!!!!!!!

If you think you can discount every thing I post by slapping the “hate” meme on it, go ahead. I see how well that worked for gmc.

I see how well the angry woman meme has worked, as well as the “all liberals are terrorist supporters” label. You guys think if you put your hands over YOUR eyes no one can see you? heheheh

Nope Nathan. You all righties wanna paint me with the “angry, hatefilled woman” brush, you better bring a lunch and a jug of water.

The set of lawmakers who OWN gambling parlors, take money from PRO gambling interests, pressure your local officials to NOT ALLOW a vote on gambling while also ADVOCATING a vote on the hate amendment, AND who sucks up to the religious right and the republican wingnuts….

…. that set of lawmakers is pretty small.

I think only susan “I make my living from gambling but you cant vote on it” wagle is the only member who fits that specific profile.

But we are amused, and we encourage you to try again.

Howzabout that Miroslav Klose and the German team? Holy jumpin jehosephat, talk about schwerpunkt.

Whoo boy, that’s a dangerous, dangerous man on the soccer field.

And did you ever doubt that Germany would abandon the blitzkrieg attack? Can you say France, 1940? Can you say poor Sweden, World Cup 2006?

Argentina v. Mexico coming up. I am rooting for Mexico, but my head tells me Argentina are gonna win.

If Germany don’t collapse stupidly, which they’re prone to do in the World Cup, then I’d hate to be either Argentina or Mexico.

‘Cause that Klose guy is waaaay good, and Germany look like the usual Soccer Machine (less the usual strong-arm stuff, though).

I would give my hind end to see Germany v. Brazil in the final.

And I’m boycotting KAKE. They’re running local programming, probably some frickin church function, tomorrow morning instead of the England:Ecuador match. No Beckham, no Gerrard, no Lampard, no Joe Cole, no Rooney. Not until the replay at _midnight_. Sheesh.

England have only ever lost to World Champions in the second stage. I don’t see Ecuador winning the Cup, frankly, but I would love to see the England attack against a New World team (before Brazil, that is). There’s always been something freaky about Beckham’s long passes, booted 50+ yards at a dead run and dropped right on the forward’s toe.

This will probably be the match that Peter Crouch finally gives up the robot, what rotten luck if so.

    Rotten b*st*rds at KAKE.

Subject: Day in the Life of Joe Middle-Class Republican

Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards.

He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.

All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.

Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards.

He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans.

The house didn’t have electricity until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republicans would still be sitting in the dark)

He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.

After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home. He turns on a radio talk show, the host’s keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn’t tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.)

Joe agrees, “We don’t need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I’m a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

Calling her angry just shows you can’t think of anything better to say. You know, like calling her wrong and proving it? I’ve met the lady. You won’t find anyone more warm and kind and friendly. Point Patriot. But only on kfgs sidepoint.

The main point is that “anger” is being used as some sort of credible point of refute. Somehow if a poster can be painted as angry they are just angry.

Watch I’ll show you how it is done.

What an angry person you are kfg.

  43. Posted June 24, 2006 at 4:02 pm | Permalink

KFG! You might be somewhat right on some points about your analogy with liberals, but liberals are different than leftist.

What is strange is that people equate liberals with leftist, although there are plenty of people who say they are liberal when they are actually leftist Marxist. That is the confusion.

You’re wrong about union labor, that is a leftist concept and not a liberal concept.

If you are truely a liberal then you would believe in a market economy and free private enterprise and a limitation on government power.

Oversight and regulations that are done correctly are an example of equal opportunity and public protection. That is not a leftist concept.

So while some points you made may be right, some are flat wrong.

That is why you see me say “leftist” and not liberals. I like liberals but I’m a bit more freedom conscience than Liberals. That is why I’m a libertarian.

I flat out disagree with socialism and leftist ideology. I don’t think they work properly and make opportunity and freedom near impossible.

Again! I’ll say this as a distiction. Leftist believe that our society is good because of government. Liberals and Libertarians believe that society is good because of free people that can interact freely and economically. Rightist believe that society is good because of tradition and religion.

Take you pick and choose your sides. I don’t know which side you choose KFG. I can’t determine if you are a liberal or a leftist.

  44. J R
    Posted June 24, 2006 at 4:10 pm | Permalink

Guess ya gotta call me a leftist Joe.

I do not see that the “freedom to interact economically” sans government intervention is inherently promoting of liberty or justice. Laissez faire capitalism = “He who has the gold makes the rules” As money accumulates to the fewer and fewer, justice and freedom go right along with them.

    End result feudalism.

I prefer social democracy. But then I don’t have any gold.

  45. Posted June 24, 2006 at 4:17 pm | Permalink

I think democracy is dangerous. I also believe that it’s a good thing for our society to be unbalance and unfair.

The only thing I want is freedom and the chance to go my own road in life and the opportunity to do it, if I make it or not.

I don’t want government dictating my every move, my direction in life, what occupation I must do, how much I can make each year, what to say, eat, drink, worship, do or whatever.

I just want control of my own destiny and my own life. If I’m poor or rich, sick or healthy, I don’t want to be a kept pet and under control like socialist and leftist government do to people.

What a match. What a go Mexico gave Argentina!

In the 98th minute (8+ minutes into overtime), Maxi Rogriguez caught Juan Sorin’s crossing pass on his chest, back to goal, stepped to his left and before the ball hit the ground struck with his left foot a volley that knuckled just over Mexico’s outstretched Oswaldo Sanchez.

The ball landed clean and deep in the back left corner and killed Mexico dead, although they played another 22 minutes.

Soccer is really stupid, like basketball and American football. In soccer, you can’t use your hands, unless you are a goalie. In basketball you can’t use your feet. In American football, you can’t advance the ball with your feet unless you are a designated punter or kicker.

I hope that this helps some of you realize that in these peasant-directed sports, THE PLAYERS CANNOT USE ALL THEIR TALENTS, and IF THEY DO, they are PENALIZED. These are obselete INDUSTRIAL AGE “sports”. Suppose that you had basketball where you could hand-pass or kick the ball to your teamates. or even shoot a basket with your foot? How cool would that be?

Watch and support post-industrial sports. Like Rock Climbing. Surfing. Skateboardig. Mountain-biking. Rugby. Where you can use ANY LIMBS THAT HELP YOU. Better yet, GET OUT THERE AND TRY THEM.

No heartlander, soccer is the one and only one sport that will one day truly unite the US with the rest of the world.

Teams and working together as one will never, ever go out of fashion. Unless humans go out fashion, that is. Teams and teamwork are crucial to winning of any sort.

And winning is what the US is all about.

Soccer is *the* premier team sport, one that, at this time in world history, is capable of transcending professional loyalties in fine proxy of damaging nationalistic ones.

Soccer/futbol, my friend, is THE activity that will unite the world in order while preserving beautifully and perfectly national traits.

Catch the finals to World Cup 2006, please, and then share your feedback, ok?

“Peasant” directed sports are always, always, the best sports heartlander. As I’m sure you know, it’s all about the lowest common denominator.

Just as peasant food, if healthy, is the best food.

    No?

Hmmmm, it might not be obvious that the order I refer to is temporary, not permanent.

But a temporary “first” order is necessary to *any* permanent order, right?

I think so. And I think that the order that’s achieved in the glorious tournament known as the World Cup is perfectly suited to the kind of plastic, temporary order that hangs around long enough to remind humans of the courage and will behind any kind of more lasting, permanent order.

    IMO, of course.

No, imo it is not borning, whatever that is.

Neither is it boring. In fact, the World Cup tournament ranks right up there with the Olympics.

    Only, imo, much, much higher.

It’s a great, simple game, soccer.

Check the personnel records of the best futbol players.

Not one has stepped foot one in college of any university.

    Pffffft.

THAT’s why it beats the elitist Olympics all to hell. Well, that and the fact that Olympic athletes are such covert and overt cheats.

At least FIFA now yellow-cards laggards and cheats.

    RD, go for it!

Actually, most of these x-sports will take some skin off, or maybe break an arm or ankle. Then you can go to the office and get all this cool attention! It’s like fishing, you just exaggerate a wee tiny little bit.

Oh, gee, thanks, heartlander. Not. LOL

My 16-year-old daughter climbed the Army rock wall at RiverFest last year. Did a damn fine job of it, too. And she was technically underage, even with parental consent.

I was never into sports enough to play. I have been a spectator throughout my life. I watched it all with my dad, who also wasn’t a participant but loved watching. Oh, wait, he did bowl. :) I grew up with boxing, golf, billiards, tennis, basketball (both pro & college), football (same), whatever was on.

I’ve kept score for slowpitch softball and for basketball, and actually have a clue about both.

But it’s hard enough to get out of bed some mornings. I’ll let you youngsters do all the participating, and I’ll cheer from the sidelines. ;)

BTW, I don’t go “into the office” and I doubt my family would ooh and ah over any bumps, scrapes or cuts. A broken leg or arm would limit my job performance, and nobody is going to pay me compensation.

And remember, I’m on Bush’s Health Care Plan: DGS, Inc. (Don’t Get Sick)

Let me know if you want to join and have any problems. Later today I’ll send an email invite to those that have contacted me privately. That makes it a little easier to join.

Also, we’re haveing a going away party for Rage and Nathan at our club house next Thursday. I know it’s a little short notice and that it’s a little soon after the last get together, but time is short and I didn’t want to interfere with anyone’s holiday next weekend.

Hopefully you can make it Rage. Several of us would like to meet you before you leave! Hell, ya gotta eat sometime, why not at your going away party!

We’ll start at about 5pm and go on until….

    Directions:

Go west on MacArthur Rd toward lake Afton.

    Turn south on 231st west.

Go south on 231st for approx. 1 1/4 mile and turn right at the “Lake Waltanna” sign.

You’ll come to a ‘Y’ in the road, turn left.

Take your first right into the park, clubhouse on the right.

We’ll ahve a paddle boat available for the kids if you want to bring ‘em.

    Questions? Answers?

Hank, can I drown ‘em there?

(For those ‘listening in,’ I’m only kidding. :) )

Seriously, Hank, how long have you lived in that area? I ask because I lived west and south of there for many years. Not sure why I pictured you east.

I’m not even going to attempt to say I plan to attend. These days, planning is a joke. If I can be there, I will, and if I can’t… Well, another miss will be another disappointment. Just call me Lemony Sniffles: A Series of Disappointing Events.

Will also try to remember to join the Yahoo group for Nathan, although another email loop is something I don’t need. :)

Posted the following on a different thread:

Glad to hear the meet up went well. I am back from CO. Caught fish, cleaned and ate them Saturday.

I had the “opportunity” to watch Fox News at points during the trip. I don’t subscribe to cable for fear my kids and I would watch TV more, rather than less.

This weekend the Fox News big stories were the “WMD” found in Iraq and the arrest of the “terrorists” in Miami. These story servings were heaped with their disdain that the MSM was ignoring these stories.

How many of the self-proclaimed conservatives here get their news exclusively from Fox News? After seeing just a little bit of it, I understand how Cheney (who as alleged on this blog gets his news solely from Fox) can say some of the things he does.

    Parallel universes do indeed exist.

Fox can make any outrageous claim the care to, for they know their listeners are people of one ‘news’ channel.

The new Northwest Y has a great rock-climbing wall, and Kansas has some excellent places to climb. I travel a lot. Skateboard ramps were started in California in the 80’s in city parks. I recently saw one in Vermont.

Team sports are great. I played varsity football, and im basketball, flag football, softball and soccer in college. We had “A”, “B”, and “C” levels. The “A” teams were comprised of guys who were total jocks in hs, but not good enough for NCAA IA (some were close to that good), the “B’s” were for guys who often had some hs team experience, but not always, and “C” was coed, purely recreational. I played “B” and “C” level.

But individual sports ( “X Games” for instance) are good too, because you can practice on your own, and if you flub, you aren’t cut or relegated to the bench. Usually you don’t need expensive facilities. Many of these are actually social, because people congregate and play together, often pooling resources to travel cheaply, e.g. surfing, snowboarding, rock-climbing (which is usually a 2+ person team sport, but not always) mountain biking. Hunting and fishing are social sports. You can get as much or little exercise as you want, e.g. ranging from driving to lake or stocked stream, to hiking into the backcountry to places that may only see one or two fishing parties a season.
