Is GOP on right side of racial history?

“An intriguing debate has broken out among Republicans elites over how to treat black folks,” syndicated columnist Clarence Page noted on Tuesday’s Opinion pages. Conservatives Jack Kemp and Steven Warshawsky recently have had dueling commentaries about whether the GOP is on the right side of racial history. Page’s take is that the GOP often gets a bum rap on race but that it “became known as the party of white flight” after Barry Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act. “I’ve often said,” Page wrote, “that my family did not leave the party of Lincoln; the party left us.”

This will sound racist as hell, but the G.O.P. is the party of the intellectual minorities. They have pulled themselves up by their own boot straps and often are seen as the traitors of their race. Having money and the color does not matter. Rich blacks are welcome in the G.O.P where they are not in the DNC.

writerdog is right. The GOP is the party of the successful. All races, religions, gender, and creeds are welcome.

Democrats are the party of the welfare poor and the criminal class.

I guess that is why duke cunningham, jack abramhoff, and now david safavian will be doing time in camp cupcake? With scooter libby, tom delay and ralph reed next on the lists?

Because democrats are the crimial class.

Culture of corruption. Next indictment? Must be a bonanza for GOP lawyers.

I suppose next we will get a lecture on how MLK was a leftist….

Go to a prison and ask the inmates what party would they vote for. 99% of them would say Democrat.

Why do you think Hillary and the Democrats are trying so hard to get felons the privilage to vote.

I’ll give you that there are some white collar crimes and criminals in the Republican camp, but you don’t want to get me started on a list of Democrats. It’s mind blowing.

It’s time to ring that bell again. CHECK PLEASE!

I guess that is also why the republicans are purging voter rolls of minority voters who are NOT felons.

Wanna post a link on the democrats trying so hard to get felons to vote? Do ya suppose it will have to do with the republicans PURGING the voter rolls?

“This will sound racist as hell, but the G.O.P. is the party of the intellectual minorities.”

Hey, you’re right, writerdog; the GOP is the party of those who have a minority of intellect (that was too easy!). The party of the ’successful’, as Joe puts it, attracts blacks who place their own material comfort above the interests of the country and, above all, of their own African Americans, even family. That’s why Congressman J.C. Watts’ own father said that “a black person voting for a Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.” And why 9-of-ten African American voters will continue to just say no.

As Clarence Page pointed out, ’twas not always thus; the Republican party inherited the garbage that fled the Dems during the Civil Rights movement. Nixon and Reagan gave them a home.

The ‘bootstrap’ line is tired and lacks empirical support, unless the bootstrap includes affirmative action.

General Colin Powell: on affirmative action It’s all very well to talk about pulling yourself up by the bootstraps, but too many have no boots, much less the straps.

I’m rather surprised, dog, that you would invoke the “angry poor laggard” meme, even indirectly. That’s really beneath you.*******************************Joe, if by “the party of the successful,” you mean lazy fifth-generation bluebloods like W., you are correct. I prefer working people.

Not that the Democrats are free of this kind of thing. In America, we have the best democracy money can buy!

Rage if you were to ask any minority conservative they would give little if any credit to affirmative action.More to their own actions, that is what makes them conservative and welcome by the party at large. They may give some credit in that it allowed them to focus on the wealth building. The boot strap comment is merely a metaphor for that credit. Would you like to win the lottery? Me too but most of those that win have little if any of their money ten years after winning. Like affirmative action it depends on what you do with it, the minority conservative see it that way. It is not the end all be all to them, but a beginning to their success. That is what makes them different from others that may have been helped by affirmative action.

Collin Powell himself would tell you that it was his drive that took him to where he is more then the fact that he is a minority.( As a moderate Republican, if he would run short of Jesus himself. The Democrats could not find a candidate to beat him) He is right to the extent that affirmative action can be used to better the situation in a minorities life. But like winning the lottery if they do not use it wisely it is wasted. Instead of leveling the playing field there are some that use it to give an advantage over others and ride it through out their lives. There is one case where the man’s color is the only asset he gives to the company, he has job security in the fact he is the only black with the company as such the company can claim that they are matching the federal quota as to the company reflecting the community it serves.

But yes it does boil down to money, if a minority has money they become excepted in most social status.Affirmative action can play a role in their success, but it is more their drive and desire that make them what they are and where they are. They have pull themselves up by their own boot straps not rode a perceived entitlement.

    Tracy,

You asked for it, you got it!

This Page fool is obviously just anther, know nothing affirmative action incompetent! as for the loser jack kemp, he must have suffered one too many concussion during his football career!

Lincoln was many things; tyrant, gangster and war criminal but he was NEVER a friend of the negro. Negroes have flocked to the demorats because the dems offer affirmative action, minority set asides and other nonsense like the crack cocaine of public policy. The negroes have become addicted and few stray from the plantation and massas like fat teddy and hillary the hag.

“What I would most desire would be the separation of the white and black races.”

    — Spoken at Springfield, Illinois on July 17th, 1858; from ABRAHAM LINCOLN: COMPLETE WORKS, 1894, Vol. 1, page 273

“See our present condition—the country engaged in war! Our White men cutting one another’s throats! And then consider what we know to be the truth. But for your race among us there could not be war, although many men engaged on either side do not care for you one way or another.

“Why should the people of your race be colonized, and where? Why should they leave this country? This is, perhaps, the first question for proper consideration. You and we are different races. We have between us a broader difference than exists between almost any other two races. Whether it is right or wrong I need not discuss, but this physical difference is a great disadvantage to us both, as I think your race suffer very greatly, many of them by living among us, while ours suffer from your presence. In a word, we suffer on each side. If this be admitted, it affords a reason at least why we should be separated. It is better for both, therefore, to be separated.”

    — Spoken at the White House to a group of black community leaders, August 14th, 1862, from COLLECTED WORKS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, Vol 5, page 371

“I will say, then, that I AM NOT NOR HAVE EVER BEEN in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the black and white races—that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making votersor jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with White people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the White and black races which will ever FORBID the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together, there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I, as much as any other man, am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the White race.”
