A reminder to WE Blog die-hards and newbies alike that Thursday, June 22, is not just the second day of summer. It’s the date of the official WE Blog meet-up at The Wichita Eagle, 825 E. Douglas, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. After a meet-and-greet time, there will be a period for questions, answers, kudos and complaints, during which we hope to find out how to make this riotously successful blog more so. Those so inclined also can tour The Eagle. Hope to see you there.

Sadly (or fortuitously, for those who wouldn’t attend if he did), CF will taking in the sights and sounds of a certain live music capital down the road a piece, and will have to miss the festivities. Some other time, perhaps.

A 90 minute meetup, on a week night, outside of dinner hours so the WE is not obligated to feed us. This in the face of repeated invitations on the blog and via email for ANYONE from the WE to attend the last meetup which went by the Wichita Eagle ignored until after the fact?

I hope to be at the blogger’s meetup Thursday evening. No food is fine with me. I will probably have a hotdog at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium later that evening at the Wrangler’s opening game with Frisco.
I will be attending for sure.
Especially if my dad is getting my dinner for me.

Well I can understand where Nathan is coming from – I admit I enjoy when my parents take me out for dinner. I am also capable of taking them out for dinner so it works out in the end.

It appears to me that we are like a very disfunctional family. We like to squabble amonst ourselves but when push comes to shove and one of our own is placed in danger then we all rally around them and support them. We may not agree with them but we don’t want them hurt. (Nathan’s upcoming deployment is a prime example – we may not agree with what he says but we still want him safe and sound)

That must be the place. I know it’s near Talaquah, at least.
This is like the 15th year the group has done it. The third year for one of my daughters, the first for the two others. A group of employees started it. Some have dropped out, non-employees have joined in. There are somewhere in the range of 60 going this year. My kid was making Jello Shots. 315 of them. LOL Not for on the river, mind you. :)
My youngest and I hope to go sometime in the future, but somebody has to stay home to make sure there’s still a home standing when it’s over. They’ll all be back sometime Sunday, after what sounds like a yummy breakfast.
BTW, what IS a vacation?

Point well-taken, raptor, but I’d rather put up with the constant squabbling than have enforced etiquette. It would be nice if people thought a little more before some of their posts.
The editors raised this issue before, but it got sidetracked, so I’ll raise it again: Keep in mind that human beings are on the other end of these communications, and they might take greater exception to what you’re saying than you might think. At the same, text is a pretty flat medium (that’s why great writers are praised; it take some talent to get personality, style and point across). Misunderstandings and exaggerations abound, hence the flame wars. This is particularly true if you’ve never met the person in real life (usually the case).
If this is sounding like a pompous lecture, well, folks, I don’t claim to be the Oracle, but I’m the son of a writer and have been on the Internet since 1993 (and BBS systems before that). This is not a new thing.
On the other hand, some people take this stuff WAY too seriously. I would hope I never become so lacking in judgment as to, say, threaten to show up at someone’s home unannounced (apparently to prove that one’s penile endowment is of greater magnitude than theirs).
But, if I did, I’d be bringing the beer!

By the way, regarding Values Boy, I think if you look at the bottom of the editorial page, you will see that he is the employee rep on the Editorial Board. In the past, employee reps would (presumably) sit on the meetings and (presumably) have input on the editorials. Since VB had done guest columns before, he may have asked (or insisted!) on a having a regular column himself. Given that hardcore theocrats are strong presence in this community, it isn’t hard to see why Phillip (or Lou) made it happen.

KFG,If I go to CO, will go the southern route. We are keeping you in mind for September – when Kansas is really more beautiful than usual. We will likely show up sans-trout. Will be in touch on that trip as the time nears.
I was going to say that I thought Proudman had good taste. I have met both XXX and Damoon and it seems to me that disliking them would add up to very hard work.
CF, I highly recommend Nuevo Leon for both the margaritas and the food. Ditto for Jorge’s. Both places put a limit of two drinks on their margaritas. For good reason, I can attest.
Guerro’s mexican downtown is Bill Clinton’s favorite near the Continental Club on south Congress, along with some funky cool other places in walking distance.
Las Manitas, better known as the Avenue Cafe, has great food with a little interior twist. Best breakfast in Austin, and ya have to sit on the patio. Laura Bush’s favorite restaurant.
Fonda San Miguel is more upscale, but great food and service.
If you can, see Toni Price at the “hippie hour” show at the Continental, or anywhere she is playing.
Be sure to eat at least one meal at the Eastside Cafe. The food in my place is similar and the layout is almost identical, just smaller. Best restaurant in Austin.

I was not using the first person imperial plural. Us was not just about me.

So maybe it is up to US again to make this thing as successful as possible. Success being defined by attendance ESPECIALLY of those who have not come to one before. I do wonder about the WE kind of tentitively hosting this meetup. Maybe if someone had come to a previous one, they would see it is a very civilized gathering.
We bloggers, being mild mannered and all, would likely rather have another plate of food than to ACTUALLY storm the bastille, er, the printing presses.
I dont think JR really cares about free food. I think it is the “one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake” approach to hosting the meetup that he speaks of.
I suspect that once they meet all y’all in person, the WE brass will be less fearful.
But if I were values boy, I wouldnt fear any confrontation. If I were values boy, I’d just shake everyone’s hand and know that the people I meet are just laughing, howling really, at his absurdity.

I’ll have to email you tonight. Dim sum is Chinese dumplins. There are thousands of varieties.
Each served on an individual plate. You don’t order dim sum, they bring it around and you take what you want.
When you’re done they count the plates and then you pay.

My contacts in Colorado tell me that the bears out there this year are especially vicious. It has something to do with them not being fed — they are really irritable about the whole lack of social programs from what I am hearing.
I will keep my eyes out for bears, but plan on catching a bunch of trout. I will start with my fly rod, but I am not above doing whatever it takes.

First I gotta say a WEblog meetup without kfg is a like a day without sunshine….or potato salad.
This will be the FIRST meet up that does not include kfg.
It is also the first meetup that has fewer attendees than the last. Or has it escaped notice that some who attended the last have not even weighed in to this badly promoted event?
They have not even told us where to park etc.
In fairness, I have re-considered this meetup. It is fair to note that the WE is a workplace and so the hour of the meetup might not be a slight on us bloggers but honest accomodation to working hours.
They still coulda ordered pizza.

DD, When I was out in Colorado last month, my husband I encountered a mamma bear and her cub at Mesa Verde. We weren’t more than 20 ft from her. I high-tailed it to the car, but my more intelligent husband stood right there and took a bunch of pictures of her. She just looked at us for a moment and then turned around and headed the other way, cub in tow.Be careful, with all the wildfires they’ve had out there, the bears are coming down from the mountains to look for food.

Damoon, the same thing happened to my dad in Yellowstone when I was a kid. My mom and I were yelling at him from the confines of the car. The bear just kept getting closer and closer. When he finally quit filming (those were the days of 8mm movie cameras), he lowered the camera and realized just how that viewfinder made things look farther awy. He hightailed it to the car.
DD, how nice of you! I now have to absolutely make sure I make it to the meetup. I’ve promised Julie something and now there’s something for me. Wheeeee! I feel like a kid in a candy store. (Can you tell I lead a boring life?)
