Hillary Clinton has been the leading Democrat for president in every poll but one — but it’s a big one. John Edwards has her beat in Iowa, a new Iowa Poll conducted for The Des Moines Register showed. Thirty percent of Iowans who plan to participate in the 2008 Democratic caucuses said they would vote for Edwards. Clinton came in a close second with 26 percent of the vote. John Kerry and Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack trailed behind in third and fourth places. Of course, a lot could change between now and January, but Georgetown University professor Stephen Wayne told The Des Moines Register that Clinton’s second-place finish shouldn’t be ignored. “That should be very encouraging to other Democrats,” he said, “that she’s not a shoo-in.”

I’ll bet John looks better (than Hillary) in a skirt too!!
It’s called a kilt!;)
The hildabeast is in big trouble if John Kerry’s buttboy can beat her in Iowa!
And the great war hero finished with only 12%!
Newt and Condi in ‘08!
Hank
I would seriously consider voting for Condi but not if it meant getting Newt too. I’ve just got an impression off of him that he talks the talk but can’t walk the walk. But I will not be voting for Hilary – I do know that.
Newt is one of the most effective and sucessful politicians in the running for 08.
Don’t underestimate him. He will be a force to contend.
Hank
That’s misunderestimate, in ‘The Decider’s’ lingo.
Dear Tracy,
Newt is an ‘old school’ conservative. Not one of the new ‘compassionate conservatives’! Underestimate is the correct word.
Hank
Newt????? (wiping tears of laughter from my face) What will he run on? A Morality platform? And a Condi/Newt pairing? This has to be someone’s idea of a joke.
I’m waiting for them to run Hillary and Condi against each other. Nobody will win. But then everybody is losing now, so what’s the difference?
(I think my nasty pills kicked in this morning.)
Seriously, why be concerned with who the “opposing” party will be running? At this point, neither the Dems nor the Repubs have any clear nominees, it seems. Better to concentrate more on the better man (or woman). With the unrest in both parties, nominating a GOOD candidate would be in everyone’s interest.
Will I vote for Hillary if she’s chosen? Well, I won’t vote for another Republican for president, and I have no faith in 3rd parties. I guess I could leave that box blank…
I like Edwards better than Hillary. My choice would be Gore.
Deesn’t matter though. America is either finally wised up enough to be through with Republicans or it’s …..finished.
Go ahead RD,
Leave that box blank! (You are already underestimating the Newtster!)
Hank
This is reassuring. I had planned on supporting Edwards for reasons of personal loyalty until he got out again…maybe he’ll stay in a little longer this time.
Dear JR,
In your little world, it’s finished!
Eight years of Newt followed by eight of Condi.
Hank
Hank would make a fine spokesman for the Newt White House.
The guy who divorced his wife on her sick bed and that jackbooted bush toady and race traitor Rice?
Oh bring it on con!
I would expect a North-easterner to do relatively poorly in IA. I am still looking for a governor to take the nomination in 2008.
Hey JR,
I know that sounds more like a democrat’s resume but if all you have to put up against the Newtster is pretty boy Edwards, then your in big trouble.
The problem with Edwards is there is no one he can draft as a VP that will make him look good.
Hank
Hank, how do you think the hard-core Christian Right will respond to Newt’s personal history? Divorcing your dying wife surely isn’t going to play well with the Moral Majority types. Also, I read reciently that when republicans run a black candidate in a local election, something like 25% of their base stays home. There’s still a lot of bigotry in this country. Just a personal opinion, but I don’t think having a black woman just a heartbeat away from the presidency is going to sit well with the NASCAR crowd.
Comments?
XXX,
I don’t really believe that the personnal history of Newt will trump his ability to run on issues. Newt is a brilliant political tactician.
He’s from Georgia. That will get the NASCAR crowd.
I agree that there is a lot of bigotry in this country, I don’t agree that a black candidate will hurt the republicans nationally more than it would the democrats.
I think you might be falling for the democrat spin concerning the ‘hard-core Christian Right’. You put Newt up against the hildebeast or Edwards and they might be very forgiving after the debates!
Hank
If his own sordid personal history don’t sink him, the results since his “Contact on America” will.Americans are through with Republicans.
The best man for the job, Al Gore, has probably had a bellyfull of the corruption in American politics and the stupidity of a large portion of the electorate. But I hope he runs.
Contract not Contact.
JR,
Algore? Best man for the job? Too bad he can’t carry Tennessee!
Hank
JR:
“race traitor” Rice?
“Race traitor”? Did I read that right? Yea, I checked again. That’s what you wrote.
I’d expect that kind of crap from Ian; I would not have expected same from you. Just how does one get to be a “race traitor?” Are all african-americans expected to think alike? Are there disapproved positions/opinions that african-americans cannot hold? And who are you (or anyone else) to define just which opinions are acceptable?
Look, you may disagree with Condi’s positions and role in this admininstration. You may well have good reason to. But that’s because of legitimate differences in policies, not because of race. If it is, you’re no better than the Ian brand of racist. Racism is racism, no matter which side of the sword you brandish.
I know that some will play the race card; generally the extreme left or right. But “race traitor” from the self-proclaimed arbiter of credibility on this blog? You really want to be associated with Ian on that score?
How do you justify that phrase?
I am not black.
“race traitor” is a kind way of saying how 95% of black people voters and otherwise see black conservatives. (There are more colorful terms but as I am not black, I will not presume to speak for others) And they are damned smart for doing so.Black people understand oppression.Irrelevant anyway. Rice does not want the job.
Would that working class, NASCAR redneck white folks had the sense of 95% of African Americans and realize that their voting Republican is essentially slitting their own throats. The GOP would be completely irrellevant and we’d have a better country.
Fortunately, that same group I just metioned are not about to vote for a black woman. But as I said irrelevant.
Hey Hank can you count to 500,000? That’s how many more popular votes “algore” (nice use of typical Rush dittospeak) you mean AL GORE got than bush and that was BEFORE bush ruined just about anything you wanna name. Go count to 500,000 Hank. If you can. Start now. Come on back when you are done!
Thanks JR,
I think that I’ll just count the electoral votes instead. They are the ones that matter and it will take less time.
Hank
Done counting, Bush still won!
Hank
Condi has 2 strikes against her. She’s a woman and she’s black. Not being racist here. It’s a fact. I care about neither, but the people in this country are not ready for it. The Dixiecrats will never elect a black woman.
Condi is an intelligent woman, no matter what her color. She’s smart enough to go along with her “boss” on whatever he says. (He being more the Administration than one person.) And that’s why she’s where she is today.
Her expertise is Russia. If we were still in the midst of the Cold War, that would be of great benefit. But we aren’t. It’s irrelevant.
I ask the forums forgiveness. I do not know the exact amount of ill gotten electoral votes bush “won” by. I believe it was less than 20.
I’m thinking it was 3.
In any case.
I nominate Hank Price for a gold star! He has punked out on counting to 500,000 and at least SAYS he can count to 3 (or less than 20)!
Wayta go Hank!
This is priceless!!
If you enjoy Garrison Keillor…(KFG, you don’t want to miss this!)

The only Democrat probably worth a damn and could have a chance in getting the President Office is Gov. Bill Richardson.
I can’t beleive you guys want Al Gore back in the race. But mroe power to ya. You won’t win if he is the choice for 2008.
Hank,”I don’t agree that a black candidate will hurt the republicans nationally more than it would the democrats.”
I would have to dissagree, but it’s probably a moot subject, since Condi has said she won’t run (maybe that doesn’t include a run for vice pres?) Still, I don’t think this country is ready for a black or a woman in the office of pres or vice-pres.
If Gingrich could somehow get past the nomination process, I see him open to “swift boating” because of his past. I think it would be very difficult to claim the moral high ground.
Thanks JR!
Do you think you can get that gold star to me by the Eagle get together? I’ll wear it with pride!
If Algore would have spent the same amount of time and energy trying to win Tennessee before the election as he did trying to steal the election in Dade County afterwards the fat pantload would have been president.
As far as calling him Algore, I admit that that is Rush’s pet name for him. However, I have a job. I would bet that you listen to Rush more than I do except I think he goes off the air before you get up each day. He’s only on until 2pm!
Hank
PS Email me privatly if you need to know my address for that gold star!
Dear XXX,
The nomination will be the easy part. As far as the ‘moral highground’ goes, do you forget he will be running against a democrat?
And you’re probably right about Condi not running. I think she’s probably to good a person to run for president. However, when we do elect a woman prsident you can bet your bottom dollar she’ll be a conservative republican!
Hank
“I don’t really believe that the personnal history of Newt will trump his ability to run on issues.”
Hank, since when has it ever been about the “issues”, lol.
Hank,”The nomination will be the easy part. As far as the ‘moral highground’ goes, do you forget he will be running against a democrat?”
Surely there’s an honest Democrat out there, although we may be guilty of oxymoronism to use the terms honest, moral, and politician in the same sentence.
Why does American politics seem to boil down to “the lesser of two evils”?
A guy who ditched his dying wife against ______?
Come on XXX,
You don’t know what she did to him!
Hank
And you do, Hank? She was DYING of cancer. What? He couldn’t wait?
Wanna talk Strom Thurmond next?
In your intereting mind, Mr. Price, what would Newt’s ex-wife have to have done to him to justify his dumping her while she was in a hospital being treated for cancer? Inquiring minds would like to know.
The Wife that replaced the cancer wife was later replaced by a trophy wife intern which happened during the Clinton impeachment, which is why he resigned.
Hillary, the Dem. candidate the Repubs. dream about and the one Dems.(smart ones that is)have nightmares about. As many political pundits have said over the years, You havent seen negative turnout folks….
But what do I know, I couldnt believe America voted for Bill a second time.
Dear Dar’sDis,
I think (in my interesting mind) that there are at least two sides of the story in any divorce case. Although I was merely being facetious, I realize that it was probably in poor taste to imply that there was anything Newt’s wife could hae done to contribute to the divorce. XXX and I probably know better than most on this BLOG that there are two sides to each divorce. (we’ve both been married about the same number of times I think)
It’s true that Newt’s first wife was recovering from brest cancer when he asked her to sign the divorce papers, but it’s also true they had been separated for some time. Their marriage was effectively over accept for the paperwork.
Newt has had a rather unsucessfull mariage history. It wouldn’t disqualify him for president if he was a democrat. The fact that Kerry, the gigolo war hero, has been divorced didn’t seem to be a problem for him. If you’re a democrat it seems to be perfectly OK to divorce one mult-millionaire heiress if you do it to marry an even richer multi-millionaire heiress. If he had been a republican we would have had a dozen NYT reporters following his ex-wife around asking her all kinds of dumb questions.
Hank
I do so love watching Hankie-poo flog Noot and Cundi in ‘08.
Oh, and Hank, let’s don’t forget that divorce doesn’t seem to disqualify Republicans for the Presidency, either. As you, perhaps conveniently, seem to have forgotten, the first divorced President was a Republican: Ronnie Raygun in 1948. Funny how you kind of gloss over that.
Hank,”(we’ve both been married about the same number of times I think)”
I may be up on you. How does an annulment count?
Still, there’s that Values thing. As we know in this age of dirty politics and mud-slinging, Newt’s jilting of his poor, sick, cancer-ridden wife could look pretty bad. On this issue, I really do sympathize…like me, Newt doesn’t seem to be very good at marriage. But in a campaign, a guy who’s been married 3 times is going to get hammered about it. I don’t know where or how Newt’s marriages were performed, but if they were in a church or he was married by a preacher, isn’t there that thing about “What God has created let no man put asunder”? Sounds like Newt has done a lot of “sundering” (is that a word?). And wouldn’t supporting an alley cat like Newt be a little hipocritical for the religious right? (just thinking out loud here). If gays are a threat to marriage, Newt is a one-man holocaust. I can see where there might be some questions as to his “family values”.
Still, if Newt is the best republican for the job, he should go for it. We’ll be neck deep in mud before the next election is over anyway.
I don’t know XXX. They didn’t give Kerry a hard time about his second marriage and the convience that it affords him.
Ah the party of “family values” is that way CF. They’re ready and willing to judge others and tell them how to live and even what is and is not a family. Just don’t ask them about their own family or look too close. For sure don’t ask their kids!
Joe, they didn’t have time to go after Kerry’s marriages. They were too busy trashing his war record. And I do recall that they trashed Kerry’s wife pretty good. Let’s see…she was an overbearing ball buster and a forigener besides!
XXX, word. Wasn’t she French or something?
My thoughts, for what it’s worth.
Given that a substantial percentage of the electorate is divorced, and that nearly everyone knows someone who went through a justifiable divorce (marriage clearly not working for whatever reason), I doubt that being divorced is a killer.
Republicans can hardly trot it out as a disqualifier given Reagan.
It’s a wash. Doesn’t matter.
Hillary & Newt. It would be interesting, wouldn’t it? Both are very bright and excellent speakers, both are political opportunists, both come in with high negatives, both would drive high turnout to vote against the other.
Yea, it would be interesting.
And JR, I did’t assume you were black; that fact makes your statement re: Condi even more incredible – and offensive. How dare you (or I) tell black americans what political opinions are acceptable. They have the traditional civil rights organizations to do that!
XXX,
Annulments don’t count if you get to keep your car.
I’ve had the great pleasure of reading Newt’s Gopac materials. He’s got an almost indefensible personal history. He won’t defend it. He will inoculate his campaign against it.
Newt attacts.
I disaggree with most of Newt’s tactics, but he approaches politics like a war. He is a brilliant tactician. I can almost guarantee that he already has an effective plan of attack against most of the prospective democratic presidential candidates.
He’s running. Get used to it.
Hank
I did not presume to speak for African Americans GMC. I just cited facts. Black Americans understand exploitation. I only wish working class white Americans did.
But again irrelevant. Con Rice wants to be commisioner of the NFL. bush wanted to be head of baseball. I wish he had got THAT. He couldn’t screw baseball up more than it already is! Or could he?
Fascinating and illustrative what you learn on these threads. I never suspected the sanctimonious Hank as a serial breaker of bonds “that no man may put asunder” and I learn otherwise. And he attacks me a single Dad?
Yet another reason to watch what the right does as opposed to what it says!
Yea, I know. I hope Condi gets that NFL job too; I know she’s expressed no interest in running.Irrelevent. And working class americans, white or not, understand just fine, thanks.
As far as divorce goes – neither side holds any sort of advantage there. It’s a wash.
“Newt attacts.” – Huh?
CF, I think she might be South African? But I liked her better than her husband. She seemed like a throughly delightful lady, and she never even killed anybody in a car wreck.
Hank, I got to keep the car. It was my sanity… Lol.Note to self: Never get hung up about silicone.Another note to self: You can’t save them when they’re crazy.
Are not Newt and Hillary good friends? They actually got together and champion and promoted the health care issue recently.
What would really be funny and put this nation in a tailspin if somehow we found out the Hillary and Newt were secret lovers. ;)
A foul stench slowly wafts its way through the WeBlog…
JOE!!!Some of us are eating breakfast as we peruse the blog. The thought of Hil and Newt together in the biblical sense- EWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!(shudder) I may never eat again…(blech!)
