Sam Brownback, R-Kan., in The Washington Post, seemingly timed to coincide with his starring role in this week’s gay marriage vote, explored his cancer, humility (he calls himself a “flawed man”), embrace of Catholicism and presidential hopes: “I could be the right person with the right message at the right moment. And I could be completely wrong and I’ll still be happy about it.”
Some other revealing quotes:

Let’s leave aside selective use of data: plenty o’ that, but that was the least of its problems. It was kind of presentation that would only be convincing to six-year-olds or Brent Castillo (that may be unkind to the smarter six-year-olds out there).

Every chart consisting on one stat (e.g. the number of divorces), correlated with the number of sex-same marriage. No causation, of even some proposed basis of correlating the two, mentioned. Senator Sam certainly must believe in miracles.
In addition to a handful of stats helpfully pulled out of his ass, the charts had helpful titles (my favorite being “Scandanavia”–oh, no, no fudging going on here!).
But perhaps the worst part was witnessing the Democrats respond. Tim Johnson gave a generally good speech against it–noting that his own church disagreed with Brownback’s position—but then, trapped by own previous cowardice, mentioned that he voted for the Defense of Marriage Act and, what has now become a popular rejoiner to the religious right, mentioned that it was not a federal issue. That’s right, but it’s a not a state issue either. Rhetorically, I guess it’s nice to point out the inconsistency, but it’s also a trap.

I see I’ve drifted a bit off-topic, but one wonders: what will these ever-so-heroic Dems do when the DOMA is struck down (as it should be)? Stall for time, and wait for the newly fascistized Supreme Court to reverse the ruling? I only count 3 sure votes for that, with a possible 4th from Roberts. Maybe they’re perversely expecting Stevens to die.
Or will they actually have the courage to take a stand? Having voluntarily eroded their own “base,” they might think about it.

An interesting stat I saw some time ago is that there are more divorces in Bible-belt red states than in unchurched blue states. Conclusion: Church and Republicans cause divorce.

Any bets that when he prays for his opponents that he prays that they will see the error of their ways and recognize the undeniable truth of his religious beliefs before his loving God is forced to punish their soul for all eternity due to their abominable behavior.
Anyone that seriously thinks he has a chance at becoming President needs to travel outside the Bible Belt a little more often. Most of the country would be more likely to give him a room in a psych ward than a desk in the Oval Office. Only in Kansas do people like their religious freaks this freaky.

On a related thought, I read somewhere that the primary cause of divorce in this country is marriage.
I don’t know about that outlander. All I know is that my own “blue state” (California) marriage celebrates 35 years this month. And we did that with no help from Terry Fox and his crew and feeling no threat from KfG etc.
