What a difference an election year makes

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff was asked as recently as December 2005 by talking head Bill O’Reilly about putting National Guard troops on the border:
“Well, the National Guard is really, first of all, not trained for that mission,” Chertoff said, adding, “I think it would be a horribly over-expensive and very difficult way to manage this problem. Unless you would be prepared to leave those people in the National Guard day and night for month after month after month, you would eventually have to come to grips with the challenge in a more comprehensive way.”

It is called The National Guard for SOME reason?

Why shouldn’t they help guard the nation?

This half baked measure won’t be half baked in cost.Estimates are it will cost 1.4 billion dollars over 2 years I hear.

And bush JUST extended the tax cuts for the super rich TODAY! The rich get richer and the debt gets deeper.

Bush is a liberal, period. Whenever something goes wrong – or when the party’s stranglehold on power is threatened – throw money at the problem.

It would have been cheaper to send Rove back to Diebold to rig the voting machines again.

    JJ–

Discretionary funding went DOWN 8 percent after five years of Clinton. Discretionary funding went UP 35 percent under five years of Bush.

Please don’t call Bush a “liberal.” It makes me slightly nauseous.

Call him what he is: Worst. President. Ever.

    JR–

Why do you hate the super-rich, JR? Just because you envy them and wish you were they is no reason to make them pay higher taxes.

    Hehehe–just beating them to it.

Remember, every time Bush cuts taxes, it is NOT a tax cut–it is a tax DEFERRAL to future tax payers, plus massive interest.

    Worst. President. Ever.

Chertoff was against using Nat’l Guard troops a year ago.

Condi and Colin were against invading Iran: in Feb 2001 they were saying, “he has been successfully contained, his ability to produce weapons is destroyed” until they got the memo that President Cheney really, really wanted the oil.

Then it was all “mushroom clouds” and “tons and tons of botulism toxic.”

Buy plastic sheeting, buy duct tape. Be afraid, and vote Republican.

The only thing that BushCo is consistent about is that they’re inconsistent . . .

    JJ,

You can take that ‘anybody I don’t like is a liberal’ ‘liberalism is the root of all evils’ revisionism and shove it up your ass.

CONSERVATISM is the problem. It cocks up every time, on its own terms, without any need for liberalism to help.

Grow up. All you true believer ‘conservatives’, just grow up, and face that the fact that when conservatives fail, it is BECAUSE of their ideology, not because they failed to hew to its principles perfectly enough, and devolved into being ‘liberals’.

Grow up, conservatives. Show some accountability. Be men, instead of bedwetting crybabies who are addicted to the ‘blame game’.

Several years ago, I was a member of the Kansas National Guard at Manhattan, Kansas, and later an Army Reserve unit in Kansas City. In recent years, both my former units have been called up for service in Iraq. In civilian life, the members are generally older and in various businesses in their home community. For example, one of my units contained a lot of police officers. My point here is that N.G. and Reserve members have already seen a lot of service.

So, one suggestion if anyone is listening, is perhaps the U.S. Coast Guard should be given the additional mission to protect our borders as well as coasts. Presumably the Coast Guard is trained in this business. And I believe they are under the direction of the Homeland Security Department rather than the Defense Department.

Second suggestion, if anyone is listening, is perhaps this is the time to restart the DRAFT! And I would expect nothing less than several of our EAGLE columnists to enlist for a complimentary tour of duty.

JWink, the first mention of “draft” from the Republicans and they can kiss any election good-bye. At least 2 draft bills have been on the table for a few years, written by Democrats. Probably more dares than anything else. The Republicans refuse to touch them. Too many people in this country remember Vietnam, and the Reps know they’re name would be…well, Mud works well, for here.

    The draft IS a dare.

It is a dare that we ALL share the burden of whatever wars or “actions of protection” that our government commits to.

Would that the draft could work and place that burden equally.

Republicans won’t touch the draft becasue it might touch them. No strike that. It might touch their kids. Not every Republican is as connected as bush was last there was a draft.

And so with the draft as with most things, the GOP stance is “Don’t get your ass caught in it!”

    CF, you ROCK!!!!

    Election year?

Is that why bush is asking for almost two billion dollars for increased boarder security at the same time he cuts taxes for the rich and unemployment claims for other americans rose unexpectedly?

Hey gster, we really missed you on Saturday, and not just ’cause we had to eat sloppy ‘tater salad with our liberal fingers… heheh. It sure made the motorcycle trip home risky what with all the mayo on the grips….

I dont think there will be a sea change in congress. Maybe a little change, but as long as the polls consistantly show people generally “hate YOUR congressman but LOVE mine” nothing much will happen.

Now if tanker todd were to tank, I’d think maybe something was afoot. But since we are likely to send the lying, tax and spend homophobe back to washington to be amongst his own kind… nawwwww, I dont think much will happen.

    Who?

I wish I could say “no incumbents unless wingnuts are the only non-incumbent in the race”.

“Oh lord, bless all the pygmies and PLEASE let the r’s run someone for governor who is not a wingnut”.

Yeah. Right. In what parallel universe would THAT happen?
