Gov. Kathleen Sebelius did, in fact, announce today that former GOP state party chairman Mark Parkinson is her running mate. Parkinson then had to issue a statement disavowing his past criticisms of Sebelius: “In an age where leaders duck responsibility and dodge their mistakes, let me be the first to say: I was wrong,” Parkinson wrote.
But back when he was GOP chairman, Parkinson said: “I would say that any Republican who supports Kathleen Sebelius for governor is either insincere or uninformed. She is a left-wing liberal Democrat, and no Republican in good conscience can support her.”
And in response to her decision in 2002 to pick Republican John Moore as her running mate, Parkinson said: “It’s a gimmick to hide the fact that Kathleen Sebelius is a liberal who is far to the left of the mainstream in Kansas. Clearly, she’s worried about her record, which puts her squarely in the liberal camp. No running mate can disguise that.”
Never mind.

Let bygones be bygones.
Just like any politican, they can be bought for a price or a position and will sing a different tune for everybody to hear.
I kind of feel sad for Sebelius though.
Very sad!
Oh my God, they might compromise! Martha, git mah gun.
Another example of how there is no difference between a Democrat and a Republican.
Is this switching parties thing common here in Kansas? I have seen it a very few times on the national level, but am not used to seeing it happen on a state level quite so much.
(Am still learning how things work here…)
Raptor,This switching is a relatively new phenomenon here in Kansas. I believe it is a reflection of the ongoing civil (and not so civil) war inside the state Republican Party. Moderate Republicans have been demonized by the Arch-conservative dominionists as suggested by the earlier thread about Parkinson.
My moderate Republican legislator was cussed out by Brenda Landwehr for having the gall to ask her about the budget.
Things are not pretty inside the KS GOP right now. I expect as Bush’s political capitol proves as bandrupt as his policies, you may see a similar bloodfest on a national level.
Our country needs moderate Republicans, it is too bad the GOP has sold out to the likes of Rove, Falwell, et al. IMO.
The national and state GOP has to have another agenda besides turning the U.S.A. into a country only fit for conservative, dominionist/Christian Republicans. We have other types of people living here, too.
LIBERAL is not a dirty word. It’s just a point of view.
Raptor,What you are seeing now is a PR stunt. They found a former official who was kicked to the curb and are attempting to paint a picture that active party leadership is switching in droves. The actual numbers of office holders that flipped have been almost exclusively from Democrat to Republican since the Clinton Administration, when over 440 democratic office holders became republicans. It is a far more common event than we imagine, as a growing number of politicians are simply interested in nothing other than staying employeed, and collecting their contributions.
Typical moderate Republican. Doesn’t believe IN. A. THING.
It will be interesting to find out if this will be a political liability for Sebelius. I doubt it, but a skillful candidate can turn this into one.
But we have to see who emerges the victor in the Primaries. There are seven Republican candidates for Governor.
That should tell you something about the state of the Republican Party in Kansas. Basically “every man for themselves.”
Hehehe, watching the right wingers spin this as a good thing for Republicans is quite humorous.
Here’re the facts–the Republicans continue to demand more and more obseience to their religious dogma.
They’re like the old time Bolshiviks or Maoists who tried to outdo eachother with ideological purity.
Eventually, only the true believers are left and everybody else is marginalized.
The moderate “country club” Republicans are sick and tired of having to cede power to the “extra chromosome” (their term, not mine) fundies.
C’mon over to the Democrats. We don’t discriminate.
“C’mon over to the Democrats. We don’t discriminate.”Talk about ideological purists – or Nazis.
I wouldn’t mind joining the Democrats, but you guys have too many leftist and total nutjobs on your side that makes the nuts on the Republican party seem sane.
At least with the crazy religous right, there is a break on Sundays.
Far left or far right can both go to hell. The MSM only reports on them. Makes us all look stupid. Moderates somehow become the lesser of two evils and they are the real problem. No values. No nothing.Us mainstream Democrats or Republicans could find common ground if the idiots would leave us alone.
It speaks volumes for the rank and file Democrats who have worked hard and done what was asked of them by the party and their governor that they just are not worthy of being her running mate and she is proud to set him up to be the next Governor of Kansas. So for the Democrats that were looking at an opportunity to run for Governor they have just lost.
It was pretty obvious that Parkinson knew how she voted when she was in the legislature because he served with her. He knew that she did not work well with others especially Republicans because he made that pretty clear when he criticized her four years ago.
We should all feel sorry for the Democrats because their governor does not respect them enough to have one of them by her side. Oh, how she spins. ROFL!!!!!
