Of course Bill and Hillary have separate lives

The profile on the Clinton marriage in Tuesday’s New York Times is still generating a lot of buzz, but I don’t really see why. The primary focus of the piece is how "since leaving the White House, Bill and Hillary Clinton have built largely separate lives — partly because of the demands of their distinct career paths and partly as a result of political calculations." Yeah, well what would anyone expect? Bill is busy being an ex-president and working on projects such as AIDS in Africa and tsunami relief, and Hillary is occupied with being a senator and possibly running for president. And as the piece noted, it is understandably important politically to show Hillary as her own person. What the article and its attention do reveal, as columnist David Broder notes on today’s Eagle Opinion pages, is that "the drama of the Clintons’ personal life will be a hot topic if she runs for president." Another reason to hope she doesn’t.

Hillary is her own person? She Carpet bagged New York based on her name recongition only.

She is going to do the same when she runs for President.

In all fairness to the political spectrum, Bush II did the exact same thing.

a Slate.com writer put it best. Just what the hell is the story supposed to mean. And, the writer points out, what came out in the paper probably went through a zillion editors. Having had that happen to me, I can tell you what emerges is a far cry from what the story started out to be.

Joe – didn’t she just get re-elected in New York? I think that is a lot more than marital name recognition.

Now if you want to look at a political opportunist trading on her husband’s name look at Bob Dole’s wife!

Good point, Ben! Why is it that we feel the need to put someone’s marriage under a microscope? As if we all have perfect marriages and relationships…

Leave Bill and Hillary’s private life alone. If we had done this while Bill was President, maybe he would’ve done a better job with everything. But noooooo, we (as in the Republicans) had to go on a witch hunt, which was not only distracting to the business of the Presidency, it was a total waste of the taxpayers’ money.

Focus on your own life. If they’re happy with their type of marriage, who cares?

Perhaps the story is:1. A pre-divorce smoother-outer for Democrats (although these are two of the most political people in the world)2. Testing the waters for her run for the presidency. Still pretty iffy; she engenders total black and white, people love her, or they hate her from the depths of their twisted little souls. I still think it is the uppity woman thing.

    From Digby:

“The press is putting everyone on notice that they are going to keep their noses firmly buried in Hillary Clinton’s panty drawer for the next two years.

As he gazes upon her “striking appearance in a lemon-yellow pantsuit” old Dave is so aroused he can’t concentrate on her serious energy speech.

Hillary and Bill are more potent than Viagra to these nasty old geezers in the Washington Press corps

Oooh. What delicious, delicious fun it is for these shriveled old crones. Finally they can write about things they really enjoy instead of all this boooring corruption, war, terrorism and political failure. Damn it’s invigorating to be back in the saddle isn’t it Dave?!”

Raptor, you are so right that this is a non story. but….

Since everytime the republicans get caught in another problem, the answer is “clinton did it” maybe we need to look a little farther at this disgraction from Denny Hastert being investigated for corruption by the FBI.

Gee, do you think they knew this was coming and threw out the bright and shiney object early? I mean, since the war is going so well, the cons continue to be caught in the abramhoff net, and bush/cheney’s oil pals are still gorging themselves at the trough of your pocketbook.

I don’t have much to add, since ksfarmgrrl beat me to the punch, what with recycling digby and all.

Still, the next time any of you Wingnuts want to run the whole ‘liberal media’ canard, I’ll point back to the manner in which the DC press corps keeps running with stories about Democratic sexuality while assiduously avoiding the topic of GOP sex practices. I mean, isn’t the fact that a cocksucking man whore (Jeff Gannon/James Gucket/Dirk Diggler–and not that there’s anything wrong with that!) had a White House security clearance and stayed overnight 31 times deserving of more than ‘nothing to see here / move along?’ One would think so.

For the record, the Center-Right/Right wing folks who’ve posted on this topic thus far have shown precisely the restraint and priorities that the DC press corpse and the NY Times seem to lack.

And yes, how ’bout them verdicts! And I wouldn’t be a good minion of Digby if I didn’t also ask whether now we can FINALLY get some real reporting as to the Ken Lay’s close relationship to George W. Bush.

Oh, but gay marriage is our most pressing threat.

Gay prostitutes overnight in the white house = good.

gay marriage between consenting adults = bad.

Are those YOUR values too wichita?

Values boy, and the WE, have no idea how ridiculous that sounds given the moral failings of bushco. But please, continue to have values boy “splain it all to us.”

Well dd, that is the “unofficial” story about gannon’s male prostitute visits at the white house. Gannon, or whatever name the white house lets him use today, is also known to perform in gay porn. Unofficially of course. Until values boy weighs in, we wont know the “official” story.

CF, you so smaht. You like Ronald Reagan? His original connection to the corporate world that made his presidency possible was GE Theater. Maybe that was before your time. My cousin put that show together, as its producer. He was a “fairy”. Dick Cheney’s oldest daughter is a lesbian. GWB sent his oldest daughter to Yale, the nation’s foremost university promoter of gay relationships.

I’m not gay. But, suffice it to say, I’ve seen a lot of damage in heterosexual relationships. Homosexual relationships too. You seem to want to simplify the world. Too bad that you can’t. It’s more complex than any of us can comprehend.

The rude pundit has a great take on the conservative house of cards that is crumbling under values boy’s holy feet. The top 50 conservative rock songs.

“Right now, for the American right, an earthquake is rumbling, and the ground below is about to tear open and swallow them whole, crushing the entire movement into a viscous goo that’ll poison the ground when it closes, but at least the planet won’t heave them forth again. And in the midst of this earthquake, in their house, conservatives are scrambling around, wondering what they can save, what they can keep before the whole structure collapses. Sure, sure, they can grab the scrapbooks, the laptop, the dog. And while they may take those things with them into the crumbled ruins of their city, it’s nice to know they’d pause to take the iPod so they can rock, dancing dementedly, grotesquely, into the dust-filled darkness of their own unending night.”

    heartlander,

My comment to ksfarmgrrl was ironic, along the lines of the complex question ‘why do you hate America,’ as a way of silencing opposition to the current President and his policies. In this case, I was parodying the Wingnut/nutjob claim (by Values Boy among others) that gay marriage somehow undermines the institution of marriage. Such an argument is homophobic nonsense dressed up in a pious concern for traditional marriage.

Marriage, so far, has weathered the attacks upon it. I fear that it may not survive the efforts of its would-be ‘defenders’.

2006 will be a major election across the country – lots of governors who might then be interesting as we approach 2008.
