Iranian leader wants a pen pal

The 18-page letter to President Bush from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — the highest-level communication from Iran in decades — deserves wider circulation, if only for the fascinating insight it gives into the thinking of one of Iran’s top leaders. Here’s a link.
The letter as presented is long, rambling and in poorly written English. The Iranian asserts, among other sweeping statements, that “liberalism and Western style democracy have not been able to realize the ideals of humanity.”
No, leave that to the mullahs, whose ideal for humanity was achieved in the 13th century.
The decidedly undiplomatic missive conveys the impression of a parochial, insulated leader and religious fanatic who wants to be a big-time player on the world stage. This isn’t someone you’d want in possession of a nuclear bomb.

Would the “peace be upon him” imply that Christ is dead? And, if so, was this an intentional or unintentional affront?

I understand that Bush has his own version of the national anthem, which he likes to sing in “tongues.”

They can’t have nuclear weapons but we can have 10,000 of them.

    Yeah, that’s fair.

How about if we unilaterally rid ourselves of nuclear weapons and insist the rest of the world follow suit?

    Nope, that would take guts.

Instead we hide in a cage of violence.

Bush is a native English speaker and i think you can pretty much use the same complaints against him: he has proved to be a decidedly undiplomatic missive who conveys the impression of a parochial, insulated leader and religious fanatic who wants to be a big-time player on the world stage. This isn’t someone you’d want in possession of a nuclear bomb.

    DD,

PBUH could also mean praise be upon him. the muslims do not regard Jesus as savior or the son of God but they do see him as an important prophet.

    Viva La Raza Blanco!!!

I think Randy finally hit on the TRUTH. This is our enemy. “This isn’t someone you’d want in possession of a nuclear bomb.” Nor was Saadumb or any of the other terrorist leaders. So you folks use this as an opportunity to aid their cause by bashing the current administration. For terrorist sympathizers you sure speak good English.

    Obvious Man,

It is hardly sympathizing with terrorists to knock an administration that started a war that should never have happened. Whether or not these dictators should or should not have WMD is something the United Nations should look at.

The war in Iraq has nothing to do with terrorism. That is a lie you have been fed and you believe it. It has everything to do with oil, and who controls it.

This administration is attempting to use American soldiers as the world police: Something else that falls under the United Nations.

It seems to me when only 31% of the American public agrees with this administration, then the 31% are keeping the other 69% from stopping this administrations lies and deceit and bringing our people home.

We are Americans exercising our rights to protest this government’s action in a peaceful manner; hardly anything traitorous about that is there. Your party uses the “terrorist sympathizers” tag as a ruse to keep people for thinking for themselves. It appears that ruse is failing at last. Just watch as that 31% keeps dropping until you, Rush, Bush, Cheney, Ann, and Rumsfeld are the only ones left believing it.

But you keep listening to Rush and reading Ann, and you’ll be okay. Just remember to take your meds.

JM: I think it important to point out that people do not approve of the president’s performance for varied reasons. For instance, I don’t approve because he spends our money like he was a Kennedy. It has nothing to do with Iraq.

I’m not sure, DD, though that’s the standard phrase that’s used for Mohammed as well. As unlikely as it sounds, Ian & Hank both got it right. Jesus is regarded as a prophet in Islam, just not as the Messiah.

I mean I know what it means literally in spanish, but is it a joke or said in seriousness and if it is serious, why in spanish? I am so confused. Any one want to enlighten me?

Thats nothing! The republican National Party (GOP) in other news, stated they wanted automated teller machines (ATM’s) installed at the few remaining voting places to allow citizens to withdraw the new requirement of a one thousand dollar voting fee – To be paid in cash – at the time of check in at all polls!

This is a great idea because everyone will not have to carry around a few larger bills to keep voting our party in power! Things are great! Lets keep it that way!

PBUM – in Islam all of the Prophets are treated with reverence – Moses, Isaac, Abraham, Jesus, Mohammed. Mohammed is considered to be the last of the Prophets.

Given the fact that Iran has been attacked in the recent past – including by the US – why should they not want the capability to defend themselves? Perhaps we should make them the same offer we have given other countries (e.g. Japan) to not go nuclear – security guaruntees.

Actually, Ben, I believe that Mohammed is regarded as the last prophet by Muslims. Some Christians believe that there were prophets after Mohammed.

For example, Mormons believe that Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844) was a prophet as well. Mormons and some other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also believe that all progeny of Joseph Smith, Jr., are also prophets.

According to the Mormons, then, at least one Christian prophet lives today.

Mass. Governor Mitt Romney is Mormon, as is Orson Scott Card, author of the famous sci-fi novel “Ender’s Game.”

The letter was not written in English, but rather in Farsi. Therefore, to criticize the letter as having been written poorly in English is false, as the translator needs to do a proper job of translation.

    CW,

My favorite insight from this blog came when I told my spouse that I tended to like Ian, even though I thought he had a small flaw of being a white supremacist. We were in a restaurant and she burst into laughter, thinking that I was kidding her. But, I wasn’t.
