Bush the target of new wave of protest songs

Newsweek notes how much criticism President Bush is getting in popular music this days, from the likes of Pink, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Merle Haggard, Dashboard Confessional and Paul Simon. “I am a citizen who cares about what happens to this country,” explains Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder (in photo), “and right now things are really bad.” So far, no enduring anthems have emerged from this trend on a par with Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” or John Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance,” though.

When Merle quits waving the flag, and gets into the protest act, you know you’ve really pissed off the most patriotic Americans alive.

I’m all for protest songs, but just wondering how many of them are just trying to resurrect a dead career.

    What? Merle’s career dead?

I wouldn’t walk into your local cowboy type saloon and say that, unless you’re just itchin’ for a fight.

Gee Rhonda it almost sounds like you are HOPING that no “enduring athhems” DO emerge to chastise in verse a pResident being drowned in a growing public chorus of scorn! Cross your fingers and take deep breaths!

Tracy is right. If bUsH has lost the country music crowd he IS in trouble.

Remember the big blow up when Dixie Chicks “apologized” for Bush and the war? Oh my goodness, the world was coming to an end – how dare they criticize our president!!! Now, it’s few and far between for those who support our president.

Looks as though the Dixie Chicks were right after all. Must have been that men afraid of strong women thing that caused all the hoo-ha.Tracy hits it right on the head; when you get the rednecks get mad, you’ve really screwed the pooch.

The thing is the right-wing is STILL mad at the Dixie Chicks.

They were out in front of the curve.

And then there’s Joe Williams–when have protest songs EVER been a commercial success let alone bringing a group back from obscurity?

“Blowin in the Wind” was successful . . . for Peter, Paul, and Mary. You never got to hear Dylan’s angry version on the radio.

KFG – but I am still kicking myself for the concert I DIDN’T go to when I lived back East. It was on some little farm in upstate New York but I was in a hurry to drive out to LA California. So, I didn’t make the detour …

LMAO Ben, and isnt that just how history is made?

I was only 12 at the time, but I have a sense of loss that the closest I will ever be is an old film and soundtrack. I have an original Janis poster from my southeast texas days.

But as consolation, I did see the original Kansas at Godfather’s in Hays when the cover was $2 and included all the beer you could drink…. heheheh.

Kansas and Blue Oyster Cult played at the City Auditorium in our little town, back in the late 70’s.

Funny thing, the ceiling fell the very next week, and the place was closed for years. My ears are still ringing.

When I as about 12 there was this strange guitarist who came to Wichita for a concert. He did things like set his guitar on fire; me and my buds thought ‘who would want to go see that’?

    It was Jimi Hendrix.

I won’t tell ya my Stevie Ray Vaughn story.

Yes, Blow, it is all about us.

Anyone have any review of the new Neil Young album? I liked the last one “Prairie Wind” – the songs almost made you think that Neil had a Kansas childhood. He was raised in one of Canada’s Prairie providences.

    LET’S IMPEACH THE PRESIDENT

Let’s impeach the President for lying,And misleading our country into war.Abusing all the powers we gave him,And shipping our money out the door.

Who’s the man who hired all the criminals? The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors. They bend the facts to fit their new story,Of why we had to send our men to war.

Let’s impeach the President for spyin’On citizens inside their own homes.Breaking every law in the country,Tapping our computers and telephones.

What if Al Quaeda blew up the levees,Would New Orleans been safer that way?Sheltered by the government’s prtection,Or was someone just not home that day?

    Flip – FlopFlip – FlopFlip – FlopFlip – FlopFlip – FlopFlip – FlopFlip – FlopFlip – Flop

Let’s impeach the President for hijackingOur religion and using it to get elected.Dividing our country into colorsAnd still leaving black people neglected.

Thank God he is cracking down on steriodsSince he sold his old baseball team. There’s lots of people looking at big trouble,But of course our President is clean.

    Thank God.

From Neil Young’s new CD “Living with War”

My man, Neil, is rocking once more!!!

If you can only afford this new CD or “Prairie Wind” – buy “Prairie Wind”.
