A Family Research Council debate last week in Washington, D.C., was a tough crowd for Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., given that, by a ratio of 9 to 1, the council’s socially conservative members believe illegal immigrants should be “detected, arrested and returned to their country of origin.” But Brownback argued for the Senate plan he helped craft with his usual power: “We all came from somewhere. If I have no option to feed my family in any legitimate way, we can see ourselves maybe jumping across the line ourselves. . . . I don’t want to face my maker without every day, every minute, having tried to have done what I think is the moral thing to do, even if it’s politically difficult.”

Since Senator Sam Brownback has proven his dedication and loyalty, I believe he should run for President – of Mexico!
When I was growing up, I was always told that nobody is above the law and that we have to live to the full extent of the law.. But I guess that does not apply to illegal immigrants but only to American Citizens. Mr. Brownback, how do we explain that to our children?
If a man steals a loaf of bread to feed his starving family, is that a crime? We all know that mass deportation isn’t practical. Perhaps our economy will suffer. Perhaps it will be too great a drain on our police/troops/INS to follow through. But the biggest problem, IMHO, is that you’re taking people from a life where they can survive and thrive to give back to their community, and probably sentencing them to near starvation, lack of education and a bleak, dead end life. Compassion be damned! It’s the LAW!
(Hey! How ’bout we just buy Mexico and fix it :P)
Brownback is on the wrong track.

Yeh, I know, the usual lefty windbags will go apoplectic over the very idea of reading something from NR with honest facts in it.
Let the name calling and character assasination from the self-absorbed fever swamp begin. That’s you, CF. Wake up !!!
Bwwaaa haaa haaa haaa haaa ha.
BTW, I liked Tara’s last sentence. Good idea! Mexico sure can’t fix itself.
Heck, now that 20% of Mexicans live in the USA, why don’t we just declare the trend unstoppable and annex the whole country?
Tara,While there is room for compassion for the human condition of these illegal immigrants, there is no middle-ground for the immigration issue. Either you tell the illegal immigrants to get the hell out, or you tell the American workers-many of which came here legally, if not their ancestors- to go to hell. My stance is for the Americans, how about you?
Mr. Brownback, First fix the borders, prove that you can stop the illegal immigrants from crossing in the future, after that happens would be the time to address how to handle the millions that are here.
I’m not advocating granting citizenship to every illegal living here. That wouldn’t solve the problem; it would only create a bunch of unemployed US citizens. The ONLY reason employers hire illegals is so they can pay them substandard wages! If these new citizens now have the right to demand decent wages, you know employers will turn ‘em lose and wait for the next batch of illegals to come in. Vicious circle. We have to stop the source of most of these immigrants before we can think of granting citizenship to the ones here.
Work toward SERIOUSLY fining employers who hire illegal immigrants, and work on border security.
Meanwhile, have some compassion for the ones already here. Don’t deprive them (or their children) of health care and education. And don’t rip them from the lives they built here and toss them back to the dogs. I’d like to think that our country is better than that.
Yes, I think I’m contradicting myself, but it’s a difficult subject. No wonder the debate is going nowhere.
My parents immigrated here legally and I’m certain they don’t feel like they’re being told to “go to hell” because of illegal immigration. They had opportunities and resources that many poor Mexican families don’t have. It was much easier for them.
Mr. Brownback, If you can not with a clear conscious represent the views of your constituents, you should resign and let someone who will.
I’ll repost this here, since it covers two threads–
White guilt won’t solve any problems regarding Mexicans or anything else. See http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110008318
The natives in the Americas were unable to cope with European civilization. As human beings, they were no better or worse than anyone else; but they made bad decisions in dealing with the juggernaut of European expansionism. They lost, and except for the bleeding hearts and pervasive tribal incompetence that remain today, that’s the end of it.
Now the natives of Mexico are invading these lands, not as technical and educated superiors, but mostly as the destitute unfortunates of a backward society and corrupt Mexican government. In overrunning our lands, they have no claim to our culture or our wealth. We may offer some of it in charity; but it is not theirs to demand. Period.
Insofar as they come here to work, they should have our respect; but insofar as too many of them quickly succumb to leftist victim mongering, they deserve our contempt.
The problem is that we continue to allow millions of people — including hopelessly unskilled indigents, some Mexican gangsters, petty crooks, and a few terrorists — to walk across our borders and take advantage of the wealth and freedoms we have built over the last three centuries. This is often to the detriment of our own underclass citizens, who should have first rights to our nation’s efforts to help the less fortunate.
Many of the illegals are sucking up welfare resources that were set aside for US citizens who have been disadvantaged by our policies in the past. Mexicans deserve none of those resources.
Tough love never appeals to the weak of heart; but unless America protects itself from these millions of squatters every year, we won’t have a country any more. We all know that sending tham back may be too difficult to be practical; but, at the very least, we could stop the flow overnight if our leaders had any sense and guts. Big IF, most unfortunately.
The very idea of illegals demonstrating in our streets for their “rights” is beyond believable. As far as many of us are concerned, the illegals have shot themselves in the foot with these demonstrations. Brownback’s sucking up to them is as politically cynical and distasteful as it gets. He needs to get reacquainted with his manhood.
And, yes, we must rescind the law that automatically confers citizenship on the babies born here to a man & woman who are not both citizens.
Senator Sam Brownback’s response is much more elegantly told on the front page of today’s Wichita EAGLE, written by Becky Tanner, titled MOTHER GOOSE HATCHES HER GOSLINGS OUTSIDE CARE CENTER. Sam muttered but Mother Goose illustrated by her actions, “I have no option but to feed my family in any legitimate way I can.” Sam, of course, on the government payroll … Mrs. Mother Goose, the old fashioned way.
The only real solution for the immigration problem is for our government and our corporations to halt business as usual with Mexico until it cleans itself up, and then create real opportunity for Mexican workers at home. The problem is caused by the huge economic imbalance between the countries, and won’t be solved until it ends.
PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE SENDING BRICKS TO THEIR CONGRESSMEN..I FOUND THIS WEB PAGE WHERE YOU CAN SEND A BRICK TO YOUR CONGRESSMEN TO LET THEM KNOW THAT: when our borders are secure, only then can we discuss other aspects of the illegal immigration issue..Like they say, sometimes you have to use a brick to get their attention!!

Build a wall and we will just circumvent it and still be able to get into America. You are so stupid! Don’t you know that there is the Gulf of Mexico to the east, and the Pacific to the west? What good is a fence along the land going to do? Our people will just go around on the waters.
