The Bush administration reportedly is pressuring the dominant Shiite alliance group in Iraq against letting Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari have another term, in part because he has tolerated the operation of anti-Sunni death squads within the police force. But just last June President Bush said of Jaafari: "The Prime Minister is a great Iraqi patriot, he’s a friend of liberty, he’s a strong partner for peace and freedom."
Given how things are going over there, it’s natural for the White House to want to nudge the Iraqis toward the leadership that would best serve the fledgling democracy. But in doing so, the Bush team again risks undermining the democratic process.

Reality check: There is no fledgling democracy, that’s nothing more than neocon/Zionist propaganda, an excuse to keep US troops in Iraq and the Key to the US Treasury, which is unlocked and propped wide open, for Halliburton and the Zionist Jews { the only real “terrorists” } to keep expanding Israel into Palestinian land.
And if the Palestinians resist being murdered, then they’re called by the phony name: “terrorists.”

Back to the drawing board for the Shrub. What ever happened to “our troops will be greeted with flowers”? Maybe they can try to resurrect Ahmed Chalabi.
According to the LA Times which reported this story over the weekend, the Shiites have 130 out of 276 legislative representatives. Critical new legislation is reported to require 2/3 majority vote, which is now impossible. Jaafari is apparently feared to be too polarizing. Moderate Shiites are reportedly willing to support a moderate Shiite replacement for Jaafari. This will not satisfy the extremists, but is it hoped it will marginalize them, and enable large-majority cooperation and reduce the risk of a full-blown civil war. Let’s hope that it works.
It’s too bad that Bush made the decision to ignore all the warnings. He knew or should have known this would happen.

Who is convinced that a stable Iraqui chosen Iraqui government was ever even a true consideration for the bush administration?
The popular will in Iraq is opposed to the continued presence of U.S. troops. So bush and company would seem to have their best interests served in an Iraqui government that is neither the true will of the people nor particularly stable.
But … but … George TOLD us we were going to make the Middle East a garden of democracy. He didn’t lie to me, did he?

Gee, I notice a distinct lack of spinners telling us everything is going just fine.
Senator Joe Biden (D-Del) gave a great talk in Charleston, South Carolina last week. He said that had our president on 9/11 been FDR, Truman, Kennedy, Carter or even Reagan, the presidential response would have been “We need to develop energy independence, and free ourselves from the oil oligarchies.”
This is what we need to do. We have shale oil in the Wyoming and Colorado, tar-sand oil in Alberta, Canada, methane hydrates off the West Coast, vast coal resources in the Rocky Mountain and Appalachian states, nuclear energy almost anywhere we want to build a plant, solar energy across the Southern tier, windpower a lot of places, especially “Tornado Alley”.
We can substantially cut gasoline usage by developing more mass transit, riding bikes and buying 35+ mpg vehicles. We can lower thermostats in winter, and raise them in summer. Plan our hot-water usage, instead of keeping water hot 24/7.
We’ll lose some “lifestyle comforts”, but isn’t that better than being exposed to terrorism, not to mention a chronic security state in which civil liberties are quashed?
He also talked about skyrocketing healthcare costs and diminishing healthcare coverage.
Outside of Kansas, the dems may have some momentum this fall and in 2008. Maybe even in Kansas.
