WE Blog keeps growing and going

Some of you bloggers have wondered about the traffic WE Blog gets. Well, it got more than 102,000 “hits” last month — an amazing total, and a 21 percent increase from January. Besides getting a lot of traffic, WE Blog is also one of the top blogs for reader responses. As I’ve mentioned before, of all the blogs at Knight Ridder newspapers throughout the country, including those in much bigger markets, WE Blog ranks No. 2 in reader comments (second behind humorist Dave Barry’s blog at The Miami Herald). Thanks, all you bloggers, for reading and posting.

Thanks Phil. I have been wondering about that.

This begs the question, “do we have fans?” and answers it.

102,000 hits in a month comes out to around 3400 hits a day. That’s a lot of people reading our posts!

I’ve heard JR wonder about how many people are read-only vs. posters. Getting a pretty rough idea on that would involve summing March’s comments and subtracting that from the 102,000 hits. Of course, it is possible that a person could just read sometimes and post sometimes. I think I fall into that category.

Thanks again for sharing that stat. I was pretty sure the editors read us. Now I’m sure:) Maybe do more stuff like this. Telling us about our stats and stuff I mean.Do keep us updated.

Yeah DD, I did an experiment a while back on the “open” I invited one “just reader” to post and tell us.I got one response! Now that doesn’t sound like much. But consider:Only a hard core “reader” would pay much attention to the “open”Of the “readers” only a small fraction would likely respond. Otherwise they would be posting. To respond to my call they had to post.

So it is a good bet that we have at least hundreds of regular readers and maybe a larger number of occasional readers. They, like us, probably gravitate to the hot button threads. (religion , guns, politics, war etc.)

It is a humbling thing to think that many people read me. I am humbled also by the depth of intellect and the passion of ideas of most of my fellow posters. I feel honored to be among them.

    Ok, done being humble!

Yours with as much sincerity as I can muster,

    J R

I totalled the post for March ‘06. There were 6,988 posts for that month.

Let us suppose that I am average: I bet I hit the blog ten times for every time I post. That would mean that readers + ever-poster contacts would account for 69,880 hits. That figure from 102,000 would be 32,120 read-only contacts. If these read-only vistors averaged 10 visits/hits a month that would mean over 3,000 read-only visitors. That seems to me hard to believe in a way.

One reason I got interested in this question was that not long ago, I received email from someone I’d never heard of in Hays, KS commenting on a Connie Morris post I had made. I was telling JR it seemed kind of strange to think that there are people outside of the relatively small groups here reading this stuff.

Maybe another reason to have your best manners on display.

Another thing that probably inflates the hit numbers on this blog is the fact that I often find after reading or posting that when going to the “Back” button on my browser – my connection has timed out and I have to “hit” again. So the above numbers may be (likely are) over-estimates. Oh well.

Another thing to consider, DD, is that even if the blog has thousands of “readers,” that means everyone who stumbles onto it accidently, to regular followers. And that figure could include some bored kid in Idaho, some guy in Finland, Ed’s friends in the Middle East. . .you get the idea. When the potential audience is in the multi-millions, thousands don’t seem so big.

Did you notice the hit-and-run posts on “Hu cares about human rights” thread? I strongly suspect those posters were blog-surfers from overseas, and we won’t be seeing them again!

I have also seen posters from Tenn, and New Mexico.Another thing to remember is that our words stick around on the archive. A little fact that comes in handy useful every now and again. That and being part of the internet, they basically live forever. You see examples of this every now and again when a not before seen poster posts an old thread they probably ran into with a search.

Lets keep posting this thread awhile. Keep it running. All the bloggers should get to see this.

The Eagle blog sites would probably get more hits if they would take care of the problems with the so called ‘obscene’ words. I do not believe that ‘Jason’, ‘Henry’, ‘Fredrick’, ‘http’, ‘www’and numerous others are ‘obscene’. It apparently does no good to tell the Eagle about this problem since they do little or nothing to inform their people in India to correct these problems.

Have you ever visited the number one site? The Dave Barry site? They have DOUBLE the obscene words and ideas.

What a really good thread for this to happen on!

I can share some things with our newer readers.

    A little history here.

Folks? CrusaderX is what we call a blogfart.

blogfart: noun. 1)A particularly obnoxious or offensive post. 2)A poster who engages in obnoxious and offensive posts for the purpose of calling attention to himself… for whatever purpose.

Think here of a particularly bad case of flatulence at an otherwise polite event like a dinner party. Offensive and out of place, it is unpleasant for a brief instant and then mostly forgotten. Of course “he who dealt it” is remembered.

CrusaderX was the origin for the term blogfart in this forum. It was created to define him and his posts here and elsewhere on the WEblog.

To date, he is the only poster to have actually threatened to shoot if not kill another poster with whom he disagreed.

(He is for this also known as “bullet boy”)

He was shortly thereafter universally awarded the honorary title of “Blogfart the 1st.”

This honor accords posters and readers the right to ignore him or have fun at his expense. He is something of a village idiot who from time to time so embarrasses himself that he flees the village.

I’m gonna do something I rarely do, but sometimes it has to be done.

Folks? (for those passing through here who don’t generally follow along), JR is what is commonly known as a self-important ass.

Regular readers already know that, of course.

Sorry – gotta call ‘em as I see em.

    WOW GMC

I seem to have a knack for pissing you off. This time you came all the way from another thread to attack me.

I need to get under your skin more often. It gets you feeling and you start revealing.

Nice trick by the way. Leave one thread in a huff and ride to another thread where you had not yet posted. Ride I say to the rescue of someone ol’ J R the self important ass was bashing on. No dog in the fight for you. You just get to play the hero in white defending poor CrusaderX. (who incidentally started the fight)

What are you? CrusaderX’s mom?Is your new found need to defend him just an attempt to make me look bad and mean? Ordoes it have to do with the fact that he is just about the only “friend” you’ve got?

That’s take one on your credibility since you asked.

    More?

Ever hear of “projection”?That’s when we take our own qualities or foibles we’d rather not own up to and accuse someone else the sin.

    To whit:

“self important ass”Now you may not see yourself that way. But I would not be the first to suggest that you deserve the title in spades.

That’s take two on your credibility.

    Projection? On ME?

I call it the way MANY see it.I’ll put my reputation up against yours any day of the week. But you don’t get to make yours by attacking mine unless you can back it up with evidence.Of course if I call a vote, anybody on my side is just part of that “little circle jerk of liberals” you so often decry but keep coming back to.

I have actually been known to be very nice to people who don’t really deserve it. I was the first person to try and back crusaderx down and give him another chance. I have offered positive takes on you and offered you the not unvaluable advice to take yourself a little less seriously.

Finally? I was smiling while I wrote all of this. I even laughed a little at some memories. I bet you were snarling all through your last post. Do wipe the spittle from your screen. It better faciitates your reading.

    Yours sincerelyJ R

I liken you to a snotty little rich kid who likes to hear his own voice while bossing the butler and the maids around to make himself appear authoritative, yet in reality is little more than a snivelling pompous ass! If every time someone disagrees with you, you wet your pants and start commanding people with your imperative tone please remember that no one in his right mind takes you seriously. Either learn how to take criticism without soiling yourself, or run with the pups somewhere else.

“I’ll let my substantive posts speak for themselves.”

Please do gmc. They are telling.

And when someone disagrees with the substance (subtance = anything he says) gmc will predictably do one or more of these things:

    a. stomp off in a huff after he picks up his toys and tells us there is nothing of intelligence here

    b. sniff after crying that we just arent playing nice with him while he is a model of good behavior

    c. complain about the tone of our posts while remaining superior to us and above the fray

    d. complain that we have a nice little “circle jerk” going

Sounds like the nerds I used to encounter on the playground. You know, the ones who had no friends and then whined when others DID have friends.

gmc, you give new meaning to the words self importance. And I’ll take jr’s ” self important ass” over the stick in yours anyday.

But I know, you are sooooo mature and we are sooooo juvenile.

BTW, I have seen JR stick up for posters when the rest of us circle jerk liberals were pounding on them without mercy. He has more compassion here than most, but he doesnt hesitate to call a spade a bloody freakin’ shovel when the truth is told.

In fact, he emails me sometimes to tell me when I am acting like a jerk or when I have been a big lesbian meanie to someone.

He even felt sorry for nathan the other day. That takes a BIG heart.

And in case you havent noticed, all us circle jerkers dont even agree all the time. Ya wanna see a fight?

Put JR and I in a cage and let us death match over immigration. heheh. :) Or let XXX and I talk about religion :) Or walker and I talk about sexual harrassment. Or Damoon and I talk about abortion.

And you think we march in lock step….

Friends can disagree, but friends also dont let friends post stupid. They take the keys to the computer.

I guess you dont have any friends. You’re still driving here.
