If Congress is going to pass an immigration bill this year, President Bush must take a strong leadership role. To his credit, he began doing so this week. He gave a speech Monday challenging those, primarily from his own party, who are calling for mass deportations. Then Tuesday he met with a bipartisan group of more than a dozen senators. The lawmakers hailed the meeting as a breakthrough that could help the compromise bill — which includes a guest-worker program and a path to citizenship — pass the Senate by the end of May.
The biggest challenge will be reconciling the Senate bill with the House bill, which focuses on border security and would make illegal immigration a felony. That will only happen with presidential leadership.

Bush and Leadership? That’s driving into a brick wall.
Bush has really shot himself in the foot going into this. This is an issue that cries for bi-partisan cooperation; in many ways Bush’s (and Brownback and Tiahrt) position is not all that far from that of many Democrats. However, he has done such an effective job of burning bridges that it may be impossible for him to build this bipartisan coalition.
This may be a classic example of the result of Broder’s observation. Hastert’s “majority of the majority” can now effectively control Bush.

An idea for River festival entertainment – low cost and bringing it ‘back home’. Have a “Battle of the Bar Bands”. Through the year people vote for their favorites in each genre. Then, at River Festival, the top three in each catagory would be invited to perform. At the end of each evening (one for each catagory) the Best Bands would be crowned, giving them bragging rights for the coming year.
No big fees to bring in outside groups; I am sure there are a lot of good bands out there who would love to vie for “Best”

Operation WetbackIn 1949 the Border Patrol seized nearly 280,000 illegal immigrants. By 1953, the numbers had grown to more than 865,000, and the U.S. government felt pressured to do something about the onslaught of immigration. What resulted was Operation Wetback, devised in 1954 under the supervision of new commissioner of the Immigration and Nationalization Service, Gen. Joseph Swing.
Swing oversaw the Border patrol, and organized state and local officials along with the police. The object of his intense border enforcement were “illegal aliens,” but common practice of Operation Wetback focused on Mexicans in general. The police swarmed through Mexican American barrios throughout the southeastern states. Some Mexicans, fearful of the potential violence of this militarization, fled back south across the border. In 1954, the agents discovered over 1 million illegal immigrants.
In some cases, illegal immigrants were deported along with their American-born children, who were by law U.S. citizens. The agents used a wide brush in their criteria for interrogating potential aliens. They adopted the practice of stopping “Mexican-looking” citizens on the street and asking for identification. This practice incited and angered many U.S. citizens who were of Mexican American descent. Opponents in both the United States and Mexico complained of “police-state” methods, and Operation Wetback was abandoned.

Bilingual education — educating students in languages other than English, principally Spanish; denying parents any say in whether their child should be in such classes; threatening legal action against local school boards that teach children in English; denying bilingual education to non-Spanish-speaking Indian immigrants from “Hispanic” countries (i.e., refusing to educate them in their Indian languages and English) and instead teaching them in Spanish; manipulating “bilingual” education to officially promote Spanish as co-equal to English.
Multiculturalism — promotion of other cultures, especially “Hispanic,” while demonizing, demeaning and eliminating the European-American identity of the United States wherever possible from school curriculum to the names of buildings and streets to the recognition of monuments and holidays. For example, in 1994, San Jose, California spent $500,000 of taxpayers’ money to erect a statue to the Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl, in a public park replacing the previous monument of the Liberty Bell.
Land claims — introduction of H.R. 505, “Guadalupe-Hidalgo Treaty Land Claims Act of 1999″ that would enable descendants of Mexican citizens who had been living in what is now the State of New Mexico at the time the land was acquired by the U.S. in 1848 to submit community land grant claims challenging the existing ownership of private and public properties.
Freedom of speech — refusal of federal, State, and local authorities to arrest and prosecute those “Hispanics” who called for the assassination of California Governor Pete Wilson or made death threats to the sponsors of California Proposition 187 that denied free welfare services to illegal aliens; refusal of federal, State, and local authorities to protect billboards in Los Angeles calling for immigration reform or to arrest and prosecute those “Hispanics” who threatened violence if the billboard was not taken down; the removal by local authorities of billboards in New York City that called for immigration reform in blatant violation of the First Amendment; enactment of “hate crimes” laws which demonize European-Americans then interpreting such laws to cover “hate speech” so as to legally and financially penalize any expression of “politically incorrect” beliefs on immigration, bilingualism, multiculturalism, affirmative action, etc.
