    Open thread? Good!

Let me take this oppourtunity to offer in defense of our esteemed Governor an explanation for her recent unethical and illegal solicitations for contributions (bribes). You see as the Insurance Commissioner for the state of Kansas she was the only elected official in the state that was legally authorized to solicitate contributions from those she regulates. (Note, there is no mention of the term “campaign” so contributions could be to her pocket).Given this little insignificant perk, there is every reason to believe that she felt it entirely ok to continue this sort of behaivor since after all, if it’s good for the 4th most powerful position in the state, it must be good for the top dog. Please forgive her digression as I am sure it will not happen again. (until you blink)Kind of amazing though that it makes national headlines when it is a Republican Governor.

From the NYTimes:”Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Mr. Rove, said Mr. Rove would be cleared. ‘We’re confident at the end of this that Mr. Fitzgerald is going to find that Karl has been totally truthful and not only has done nothing wrong but has done everything right.’”

    Quote of the Day:

“No one must lightly dismiss thequestion of race. It is the key to world history, and it is precisely for this reason that written history often lacks clarity – it is written by people who do not understand the race question and what belongs to it. Language and religion do not make a race – there is only one thing which makes a race, and that is blood.”

An idea for River festival entertainment – low cost and bringing it ‘back home’. Have a “Battle of the Bar Bands”. Through the year people vote for their favorites in each genre. Then, at River Festival, the top three in each catagory would be invited to perform. At the end of each evening (one for each catagory) the Best Bands would be crowned, giving them bragging rights for the coming year.

No big fees to bring in outside groups; I am sure there are a lot of good bands out there who would love to vie for “Best”

From Dan Froomkin at the WashPost:

“Mark Corallo, a former spokesman for the Justice Department, would be part of the public relations defense team, according to a person familiar with the plan. Corallo is no stranger to high-profile defenses. He was spokesman for former representative Bob Livingston (R-La.), who was forced to step aside as the incoming speaker of the House in 1998 after admitting an extramarital affair.

“Corallo specializes in ‘crisis management’ now. Here’s his bio .

“Corallo told me this morning that he was hired by Luskin in October.”

    ian,

I just downloaded Endymon (it’s a novel BTW) and the quote you attribute to it isn’t there. Even if it were..as i said, it would be from a NOVEL, and would not, therefore, necessarily represent the feelings of Disraeli himself.

No matter, this is at least the third time you’ve misattributed (to put it mildly) quotes to famous personages.

You lose credibility every time you do it.

    MEET UP

Ok folks, I would like to make reservations for the meet up tables at Watson Park. With the event now just 2 weeks away, I need to do that this weekend to be sure we don’t end up sitting on the ground.

I can’t post links. If Julie would be kind enough to post the link she emailed me here, you can then see the park and the tables it has to offer. The tables are about $30 for 4 hours in most cases.

What 4 hours do we want? Earlier or later? 1-5? 5-9?Walker and KFG have the farthest to travel. What hours best for them?

Julie called for a head count but that was on the old open thread. I (We ) need to know how many people for the folks who are bringing food. Don’t want any fights over the potato salad or chicken!

So get me numbers and info and I will finalize arrangements. Also if everyone who is coming could bring just one dollar for the tables I would very much appreciate it.I think with the numbers coming that will just about cover it.

Rush Limbaugh Arrested on Prescription Drug Charges

Brian SkoloffAssociated PressFriday, April 28, 2006; 6:39 PM

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Rush Limbaugh was arrested Friday on prescription drug charges, with his attorney saying he has reached a deal with prosecutors that will eventually see the charges dismissed if he continues treatment for drug addiction.

    Rush Limbaugh prosecution politically motivated?

The only person in that prosecutors district(possibly the entire state of Florida) who’s ever been charged under the “doctor shopping” statute just happens to be in the top ten “most hated by liberals” list. The prosecutor happens to be very active in Dem. party politics.

    You decide.

The poor guy couldnt make a case despite a near 3 year investigation. About all he could manage was to weasel Rush out of some pocket change to help save face.

    And speaking of politically motivated….

Arent you the same guy that thought it was ok that the chair of the bush/cheney campaign in 2000 was also in charge of the florida vote count?

And never mind that the governor of that state is the preznit’s brother, and it was under HIS direction and Katherine Harris’ that the voter rolls in florida were oh-so-carefully purged of democrats before the 2000 election?

But the prosecutor in rush’s case is an active democrat so that makes his conviction politically motivated?

When did sauce for the goose suddenly not equal sause for the gander?

  46. Heckler
    Posted April 29, 2006 at 10:37 am | Permalink

No it is not OK for Rush to abuse drugs, prescription or otherwise. But it is not OK to selectivly prosecute based on someones political or social status. When this thing started the “doctor shopping” statute had been on the books for several years but in every case that abuse had been cited the defendant had been refered to treatment and no charges were filed. In light of those facts it is hard to come to any other conclusion, that the prosecutor was doing it for political reasons.

Premise A: It is not okay to selectively prosecute based on political/social status.

Premise B: Everytime the doctor-shopping law has been used the offender has been referred to treatment.

Therefore: Rush was politically targeted. QED

I was simply pointing out the article was not clear on who might or might not be implicated. If he is correct and there was no doctor shopping, which I’m skeptical of-then the doctor that gave him the drugs was complicit in all of this too. I’ve heard a number (not substantiated) of the enormous amounts of the drug he was taking and let’s just say that the doctor that was writing these scripts should have a lot of explaining to do”

Selective prosecution? Like how we selectively prosecute those who hire illegal immigrants?

Thanks KFG for the post. You know the whole thing with Oxycontin is pretty interesting. Anyone who takes that drug long enough becomes physically dependent upon it – any- and everyone does. Supposedly one is then left on this drug or medically detoxed or withdrawn off of it. One is addicted if one cannot or will not undergo the withdrawal, or if one takes more than what one is prescribed. Though I dislike giving Limbaugh much credit, it does seem to me that the line between legal and medically appropriate treatment and addiction and illegal behavior is a little on the fuzzy side with this particular medication.

The tables rent for 4 hours.

3:30 on is at a large shelter we would be sharing with other groups but I don’t see that as a problem. This is close to a playground, bathroom and the lake (in case anyone needs throwing in)

Politics isn’t all there is to life. Many of my friends are conservative, and they’re great people (just misguided, lol).

I urge all of you regulars to attend. I’d really like to meet Heartlander, Raptor, CKL, KSsam, GMC70, and all the rest. We could even rent a skip-loader to roll CrusaderX into the lake.

JR, whatever time works for everyone else works for me.

DD, not sure what you meant in your post, but no one needs the amount of oxy that rush was buying.

And Dr. shopping to get the drugs you need is not ok.

If he needed them, he should have gone to one legit doc. And if he was addicted for medicals reasons, they could have helped him with that too, before he started breaking the law.

Do ya suppose he was trying to hide his oxy use, legit or not, because he has been so harshly condeming of others with the same problem?

He would rather break the law than admit he is no different and no better than the people he scorns?

…and for the record DD, I took oxy for three months when I had my knees replaced. I was never addicted, and in fact, couldnt wait to stop taking them. Maybe I didnt take it long enough or in enough quantity to be addicted, but I was really glad to stop taking them.

But then downers were never my drug of choice :)

On the Rush & Oxycontin: Clearly, the amounts of the drug, trying to buy the drug from non-pharmacy sources, him trying to have multiple/overlapping legal sources (MDs) of the drug all point to a serious addiction. Rush has admitted as much.

Every addict I’ve ever known has always tried to hide their addiction; Rush was maybe more invested in the deception for whatever reason.

KFG, I am betting that you took that drug long enough to have physical dependence. From what you are saying, it’s sedating effects were worse than any withdrawal you might have felt. You are chemically lucky in your make-up, I would say. Some people are not, however. Rush was one of those in the latter group.

The point I was trying to make in the earlier post, is that the demarcation between legally sanctioned use of Oxycontin and addiction is not as distinct as some people believe or want to believe. Of the people I have known, any who tried to get off of Oxycontin had serious problems doing that. Pain is a subjective thing and difficult to treat. MDs, if they are being honest (which does not happen much on sensitive subjects), all know of pain management practices/clinics that are ethically challenged.

Heckler,My critique of your logic made perfect sense. It was your reasoning that was not making sense. Usually, you do considerably better than that. You haven’t been sampling that hillbilly heroin have you?

One more thing, my wife would argue that me sounding more like JR would be a good thing. But, she generally is pretty argumentative.

The Bible has been translated into many different languages, so why should the “Star-Spangled Banner” be limited to English?

Is the “Star-Spangled Banner” any more sacred than the Bible, that it must be limited to one language, as was attempted by the early church with the Bible in Latin a thousand years ago?

Second, a large majority of Puerto Ricans are Spanish speakers and most of events there are conducted in Spanish, and, after all, the island is a U.S. Territory. The Spanish character of Puerto Rico is recognized as is their right to speak Spnaish, but we are going to require them to recite only the “Banner” in English?

Third, why not translate the “Star-Spangled Banner” into many different languages accompanied by a brief description of the events surrounding its penning, with an explanation of why it still (or perhaps even moreso following the demise of slavery and near end of racism) reflects U.S. values and democracy. It would then make a great teaching tool around the world and clear any miscomprehensions about what America stands for. The federal government could put it on one Web page and you could choose the language. After all, the U.S. Government has beamed U.S. propaganda into Cuba, as it did the former Soviet bloc (in many lanaguages) for years. Would it make sense to broadcast the “Star-Spangled Banner” into Cuba in English? Let’s send the “Banner” to Havana in Spanish everyday and bug the heck out of Castro.

There are many phases an addict goes through. And just about every addict goes through the same stages. The primary one being denial. Has anybody talked to an addict and had them admit the addiction? I would bet it happens maybe one out of a hundred times. Rush’s actions are no different than anyone elses. The difference is he is a celebrity, same as Boy George or Robert Downey Jr.

The one thing that sets him apart is his sanctimonious attitude regarding addicts as a whole. As such, he deserves to be held to a higher standard, and he failed to attain that standard.

The bottom line is: is it his fault he is an addict? Yes and no. Yes, in the fact he does know so much about addiction via his talk show, and no as in anybody can become an addict.

The interesting thing to watch will be if he can stay off the stuff for the next 18 months. Any bets?

  79. Darwin'sDisciple
    Posted April 29, 2006 at 4:53 pm | Permalink

    Good points, J.M.

I don’t think that Rush could help that he has what is likely a genetic vulnerability to addiction. But, yes, he does have the responsibility to do something about the addiction – which is stay off of the drug.

Irrespective of type of treatment, successful outcomes with addicts (defined as being clean for one year after the termination of treatment) is realized for 50% of the treated. So, there is an even chance Rush will make it, and an even chance that he won’t. It is a coin toss, for all practical purposes.

It took me a couple of tries to completely give up cigarettes. One drug I was definitely addicted to. The first meet up at Lake Afton was my 5 year birthday being free of cigarettes. I don’t how I did it, other than I became convinced they could kill me if I did not quit.

Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise wasmanufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise everdelivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not makeit to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargowas forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and wereeagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day ofMourning, which they still observe to this day.The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and isknown, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

As much fun as it sounds like, I think I’ll pass. There’s so many things I’d rather do, like pull my fingernails out, or nail my foot to the floor.

Why would I go to meet the people in person who habitually spew so much vitriol on this blog? (yes, that’s folks on both sides of the political fence)

The only advantage I can think of is that many here are very unlikely to say the kind of things face to face that they routinely say behind the anonymity of a computer screen. Perhaps getting to know people face to face will lead to less nastiness online. Or, perhaps not, as the Hank/JR episode shows.

    In any case, have fun.

And even though JR has ruled that there’ll be no throwing of anyone into the lake, the briar patch may get some action if Brer Rabbit shows up.

At the risk of enduring more animosity, I must agree with GM on this one. Two reasons:

First, if people in person are so much nicer than online, then something somewhere is phoney.

Second, if people in person are the same as here, then I have no interest in being called a Nazi, or accused of vandalizing a barn or whatever else comes up in person.

The vitriolic comments on here, the personal attacks based on a different political philosophy are beyond my comprehension. Disliking a political point of view is not license to insult, accuse or belittle someone.

I honestly hope you have a good time. The food sounds good and the idea is fabulous. Enjoy!

“Disliking a political point of view is not license to insult, accuse or belittle someone.”

Indeed. But given the decade-long climate of toxic persecution and denunciation of the Left by the Right, the vitriol on here should come as NO surprise. When the Left starts acting like Ann Coulter, denouncing conservatives and saying they should be killed, you will have a point.

I don’t know, JR. I could have my parole officer assure them I haven’t ripped anyone’s lungs out and served them in mint sauce for years. My therapist says I can probably be trusted with string again.

I don’t think it’s just intimidation at being outnumbered (though that’s a big part of it, I’m sure). I think they’re genuinely pissed, and I’m not sure how to remedy that.

I could point how bare-knuckled debates on BBS’s in the old days got–and we usually used our real names. In private messages, we were still friends (for the most part!). I don’t think it’ll be enough.

I could point out, like KFG has, that us liberal-to-independent types are far from uniform in our views. E.g., I certainly haven’t spared you from my wrath on the subject of immigration, now have I?

Here are my ideas to accomodate the conservatives so they can come to the meetup.

Renounce bush and swear a blood oath to vote for Democrats for the rest of your life.

I’m kidding. Long day and battles of my own.

Idea 1) Why does ANYONE have to be publicly known? There are only 6 people from the last meet up attending this one. Anyone else can be as anonymous as they like.

Idea 2) Meet up “buddies” XXX is a big guy and respected. Before the last meet up he advised me to treat it more as a social occasion than a political fight. He is pro gun. I think he will get your back raptor and maybe you too GMC.Outlander has not been heard from. I think Walker would stand up for him or at least behind him.

Nathan and Hank cannot be there. My oldest other “dance” partner is Heckler. I’m calling you out Heckler.

Surely Ruby must want to meet kfg.

Shocker07? I can’t guess your politics. Tara is about your age. Joe Williams shares your vision for Wichita. Let’s hear from you.

It’s a meet up not a beat up. Don’t like the conversation with the person next to you there are plenty more folks to talk to.

If you don’t like us, that’s fine, we won’t hold you hostage and you can leave whenever you desire. If things get to rough, I’m sure someone will back you up even though they might not agree with you but personal attacks aren’t cool in person.

As for me, I am who I am. I make no pretentions about that. I use my real first name simply because too many monikers have a tendency to confuse me. I should come up with something amusing like Ron White’s Tater Salad but I’m not that clever and haven’t had any good suggestions. I think the cons dont want to come because they think we are gonna tease them mercilessly about their boy bush, rush, iraq, culture of corruption, school finance, etc. It is really hard to defend those positions these days.

They also know how the lefties have been treated, as CF said, and they dont really want any of their own wingnut medicine.

Truth is, the meet up conversations I was in were all about PEOPLE not issues. Who we are, what we do, info that we dont mind sharing but wouldnt post up on the internet.

I think some folks wont be there because they showed their asses her in one post or another and they are embarassed. Others dont want to be known as real people, just nics on the screen. That is their right by informal internet protocol.

The pattern I see on this particular blog, on both sides, is that stupidity and playing loose with the facts will get you sent back to square one immediately. I think that is the great part about blogging. No BS tolerated on either side.

Some folks on both sides just dont like to be called on BS. They wanna stick with their positions, no matter what the facts are in reality. I’d say this blog is not for you.

And as for the lefties being so mean, that is yet another meme.

Well I’ve played to diplomacy. But Kfg brings up an interesting point. Maybe some folks (not accusing anyone specifically) prefer total anonymity in this forum. As kfg said that IS their perogative.

Last meetup I didn’t want to attend because there were some folks there who I had been in violent blog disagreement with. A friend on my side advised that I had been at these folks a long time and he thought I’d jump at the chance to confront them personally. To be more direct he called “chikenshit” on me.

    Does that call apply here?

Some on the right have been beyond nasty to some on the left. Why not come and prove to yourself that kfg doesn’t have horns? And I think CrusaderX once speculated that I and kfg were the same person!

Maybe it’s easier to hate or malign people you have never met.

By the way? I went to that meetup and there were no confrontations. Now to be fair I arrived late. There may have been bloodshed before I arrived. I saw no evidence of it.

I also stayed late, after all the other “liberals” were gone. Outnumbered 2 to 1, I was not set upon. Not there anyway:)

It’s just a picnic folks. If your rhetoric can’t stand the light of day in the face of your “enemy” well…….

Hey its ok stay away. It says more about you then the folks who don’t. Besides, it’s easier to bash on ya if you aint there!

You almost had me convinced, and I still might make it. Nervous? No. Worried that my opinions won’t survive the light of day? Not a bit, in fact, we’d probably be more in agreement than you might think.

And yes, those who come are the least likely to be overtly hostile in person.

Then you tossed in the last line:”Hey its ok stay away. It says more about you then the folks who don’t. Besides, it’s easier to bash on ya if you aint there!”

and much of the goodwill went away.

Of course, you also wrote, in another thread “I have something of a respected voice here.” You may think so, some might. I’ve seen little evidence of it.

Oh well. I might make it anyway. It would be interesting to put a face to the words. What time? 3:30? That just gives me time to get to the range and put 400-500 rounds through the day’s gun of choice first!

    Kellogg Traffic Jam!

I was driving home Friday, May 5th on East Kellogg when I began seeing flashing police lights over on the west-bound side. No, they weren’t after me. There were 4, by my count, Wichita Police cars with cars pulled over just after the Hillside interchange about 2:15pm. A little farther up the road I saw 2 policemen up in the fenced-in walkway that straddles that road, one with a radar gun pointed toward the west-bound traffic and one with a clipboard, I can only assume writing down license plates as they passed by. On the entrance ramp, there were 5 more Wichita Police cars poised to intercept speeders.

It made me stop and think and ask myself several questions.

What amount of speeding warrants this extravagant deployment of resources? 2, 3 or 5 mph over the limit?

Does it have any positive effect besides providing an alternative revenue stream for the city? Or does the city have so much of an over-abundance of police personnel that it can allocate them to such a focused effort?

What other crimes, like bank robbery, burglary, rape or murder, or maybe people driving around talking on their cell phones and not paying attention to their driving, were occurring while these 9 Wichita Police Cruisers and their complement of officers (estimated two per car plus 2 on the bridge = 20 officers) were handing out tickets?

Is this type of push effective for detection of other crimes that are “spotted” during such a stop? Like no seat belts? Drugs? Littering? (The last one definitely needs enforcement considering the look of my front yard from all the trash thrown out by cars running down my street!)

I realize that these officers are, for the most part, not responsible for such a “show of force”, and that the orders to mount such an “offensive” come from up the line. But I wonder if the community would not be better served with less of these events. The public perception of police “picking” on motorists would certainly diminish with fewer occurrences such as this. (Wouldn’t it be nice if more people thought more kindly about our police officers, instead of fearing or loathing them for taking such actions against the regular “Joe’s” out there just trying to get to where they are going?) And I wonder if the officers themselves would rather spend their time doing what might be seen as service to the public, not abuse of the citizen.

    Just some thoughts.

    Robin..

WPD stats show that they average 40 tickets an hour in one of those efforts…with the average speed being close to 70 with several people exceeding 80MPH every time they do that.

A couple miles an hour is no big deal…20 or 30 over is…especially when they rear end your car–as happened to a co-worker of mine.
