On abortion, even headline language can be loaded

The headlines around the Web on articles about Tuesday’s teen-sex decision by a federal judge in Wichita said a lot about the spectrum of perspectives on cultural issues these days:
“Snitch rule on teen sex barred” (Chicago Tribune)
“Teens’ sexual privacy upheld” (The Kansas City Star)
“Federal judge creates new protections for child rapists” (Christian News Wire)
“Kansas judge: Abortion businesses don’t have to report teen sexual abuse” (LifeNews.com)

So much for an unbiased media. Where does one go for reliable info without all the spin and sensationalism? Certainly no place on TV, now it seems the newspapers are following suit.

It’s when post-modernism meets consumerism. Opinion is as good as fact, because all facts are biased. And then, you give the people only the opinion/facts they want to hear – let the consumer decide to listen to the spin that fits their preconceived ideas. What do I think we need? Media studies course required for all high school students. Print, TV, internet, we all say kids are so media savy these days, nonsense, they only think they are.

No Damoom, the newspapers are not following suit. They have a much longer yet more subtle history, rich in fraud and deception dating back as far as the 1700’s in this country alone.Always remember everyone. Almost every job concievable, including, lawyers, doctors, plumbers, morticians, barbers, butchers and hookers all require some sort of certification or qualifications to do their job. Journalists do not (no matter what they try and tell you) and publishers make full use of that forgotten tidbit.

    Steve,

Being a whacked out right wing Christian fanatic is required of all successful Kansas politicians. In Kansas a moderate is someone that thinks imposing the death penalty for homosexuality is too harsh but a life sentence would be fair.

Sum1, you CAN NOT say here that christians lie. You may not imply it. Fred, terry and joe, and their little dogs too, simply will not allow it.

You will be roundly chastized because if they lie, “they are not real christians”. It will be meme after meme if you imply that christians are not perfect. They assume the mantle of moral superiority and that justifies putting the rest of us under their arbitrary thumb.

I mean, they run their lives and churches so well, that it gives them the divine right to make the rest of us live by THEIR whims. We who are not christians simply are not able to live a good and decent life without their authoritarian assistance.

After the usual memes, it will be bible quote after bible quote to justify whatever the christians have or have not done. Then your personal moral compass will be questioned, and you will be told that YOU are the problem here.

Get it now Sum1? christians NEVER lie, they only make missteps, or they got faulty information from someone else or… well… how dare you point out that the emperor has no clothes!

When all else fails, they leave the arena in a huff, wrapped in their cloak of infalibility and self righteousness. They leave all of the rest of us to burn in hell because we dont do the hokey pokey like they do. You know, that voodoo that they do so well.

And when they leave the rest of us behind, they will also be taking the contents of the collection plate, tax free, courtesy of all us heathen taxpayers.

    KFG,

I don’t know of any Christians that say they are perfect.

I have never heard Pastor Terry or Joe imply it or say it either.

Christians don’t leave you to burn in hell. You make that choice all on your own…

Why do you have to constantly lie about Christians and what Christianity is about?

  16. Allie
    Posted April 21, 2006 at 1:52 pm | Permalink

No, sometimes they offer the far more obnoxious – “Not perfect, just forgiven.” They might not tell you they are perfect, just that they are going to heaven ’cause their sins are forgivable and you are going to hell. Don’t tell me that there isn’t a great deal of gloating when a lot of Christians decide who is going to hell and that they aren’t. I think Ksfarmgirl accurately reflects her perceptions of self-righteous Christians. Is it perception? Sure. Is it accurate? I think so, and I am a Christian. Should it make Christians sad to be perceived thus? Of course. Does continuing a hostile “no we aren’t” convince anyone that Christians aren’t as self-righteous as they are perceived to be? Probably not.

Nathan,It’s because of their ignorance, and because they are ignorant they stereotype Christians.

They stereotype and generalize when they would go absolutely bonkers if Christians did the same to them.

There are Christians who are very judgemental. There are those who are loving. I believe that both Alie and KFG would hate either. It really is Christ who offends them.

Their god is the US government. The government is supposed to fix every injustice in the world, etc. When their god lets them down, they complain and whine about everything and everyone who disagrees with them. They try to belittle Christians because their hate and anger needs some “credible” outlet. That’s why they post so much on this blog.

It REALLY is pathetic. It’s also quite ironic when they say Christians “hate”, when they HATE Christians.

  18. Allie
    Posted April 22, 2006 at 9:17 am | Permalink

Rightupercut,I don’t hate Christians; I hate the fact that so many of them (and it seems like more and more all the time) do fit the model that Ksfarmgirl suggests. I hate the fact that ksfarmgirl’s assumptions are far too often true about us. I want very much for more people to, you know, “know we are Christians by our love.” Yes, it is unfair that Christians end up held to a higher standard because they have made a commitment to that higher standard. The charge of hypocrisy is only possible when you have firmly held beliefs. And Christians do stereotype atheists, homosexuals, pro-choice people, and others in derogatory and unfair ways. Are you not being derogatory in your assumptions and stereotypes of those who disagree with you? Maybe ignorant and pathetic aren’t unsubstantiated insults. I guess we know what kind of Christian you are.

I dont hate you, I hate what you do to me and mine. Your hate results in a lifetime of second class citizenship for me. My hate is only a minor irritation to your perfect image of yourself.

I am not screwing you in the civil arena like you are hammering us on civil issues.

I dont work to make laws that institutionalize hate as part of the kansas constitution.

There has been an aspect of what Jesus taught that seems to have been lost on many people: sin. God hates it! He can not exist with it. Divorce, in many cases, is a sin, murder is a sin, lying is a sin, homosexuality is a sin – the list goes on.

There is speaking the truth-in-love that has also been lost. It’s confrontaion, it’s accountability, it’s responsibilty. When a person knows of another person’s wrongdoing, but doesn’t point it out to them in a loving manner, that irresponsibilty becomes a sin.

I will give you the fact that there are Christians who live legalistic lives. They also come across as extremely judgemental when they shouldn’t. They fail at their attempts at tough love. Christ scolded the Jewish Pharasies because they behaved this way.

I see the gay marriage ammendment issue as a way of saying that we are not going to head down that path because it would be wrong to do so. Yes, it is a black and white issue. I don’t feel that gay marriage is a threat to my or any other Chritian’s marriage. Many marriages have their own built-in threats (finances, selfishness, etc).

Now, the bennefits part, etc should be a separate issue. I don’t have a problem with that.

I hope this gives you a perspective so that you might see where Christians are coming from. Of course, I do not represent any other Christian. It is my opinion and it is based on what I learned from God’s word.

If it is perceived as hate, then maybe you should learn ALL of God’s scripture before coming to your conclusions.

Your list conveniently includes sins that many fewer of us are likely to engage in and leaves out those pesky ones like any lying, lust, hatred towards a brother, envy etc. that Christians are frequent practitioners of. God hates all sin, not just the ones you hate too. And God loves all people, while we were yet sinners. The problem is that many Christians are willing to condemn the fleck in someone else’s eye without concern for the log in their own (isn’t that in the Bible somewhere?). It is fine for Christians to cultivate a life of virtue and condemn sin in their community. Nobody is making you engage in something you think is a sin. However, brotherly admonition is supposed to be that – brotherly, i.e. done to those with whom you have a real relationship, not castigating a whole group of people, who don’t even share your religious convictions. Speaking the truth is love is speaking to individuals, like the Sumarian woman at the well. When Jesus condemns groups it is usually the hypocrites and wealthy. When nothing besides your religious convictions and your belief that God shares them is the truth you purport to tell, it isn’t going to work with people that don’t share your faith tradition. It is just seen as intolerance and hate. You have to be willing to see where other people are coming from too, and accept that in an society that isn’t a theocracy, “because God hates it and therefore we should too” is not a justification for an amendment.

Uppercut,What a pugnatious screen name for a follower of the “Prince of Peace.”Sorry, but Christ doesn’t offend me; I simply don’t know anything about him, except for the various myths his so-called followers propagated over the centuries as excuses for bloodshed. Whatever Christ was, his followers have devolved into one of the larger street gangs around. If Christ were around today, he would be embarrassed to be called a christian.

First off, I included “the list goes on” and thought that you would understatnd that implies there are many sins. My point is that we are all commit sins and we are inherantly sinfull.

There are various groups, organizations, businesses who lobby the government. Christians have the right to lobby the government as does any other group.

There is no concerted effort to create a theocracy.

Jed,Do you have any hope? Do you have any love?

Instead of focusing on what others are doing or not doing, where do YOU stand? It’s easy to criticize others, but can you really answer the “Why?” question about yourself?

  25. Allie
    Posted April 22, 2006 at 6:00 pm | Permalink

The fact is that you chose to highlight the sins you don’t feel yourself likely to commit. Your sins are personal, everyone elses need to be made illegal. Some sins, especially ones you probably wont commit, are just worthy of public discourse and others aren’t.

You have the right to vote and to state your opinion, but don’t be surprised if everybody doesn’t see it your way when your defense is all theological.

Uppercut,Yes, I have hope, and I’ve probably had more than my share of love. If I’m focused on christians, it’s because of what you have done and are doing to my friends, and I stand between them and you. I know this pisses off some of you from the anonymous phone calls I get threatening to burn my house down and/or shoot me in the name of god. As for the “why” question, you provide the answer to that.

“He who believes he will go to heaven is not humble enough to go”. Many Christians today are off track and are not living their lives according to the example set by Jesus. SOME things are wrong just because you say so.

Why are ALL sins not against the law? Why just some?

I am waiting any day for divorce, loan papers, and cheeseburgers to be illegal.
