Here late.

Maybe I'll be here when Nathan shows up with his answers.

Maybe he will answer if he cares about American military exposure to depleted uranium.

In the meantime.

Took a walk with my son last night. We heard crickets! I don't remember ever hearing crickets in April. I talked about this with my son. Oddly enough his name is Nathan! I told him that he should remember the snow that was on the ground the week his Grandpa died. He might someday have to tell HIS grandkids what snow was.

How many days have we had record breaking heat now?

Yes, I saw that too. It is rather amusing; the tropics are already beginning to look interesting. Caribbean close to 85 F already. Gonna be fun to watch. I'm kind of hoping the track runs a bit further east; it would be something to see a Cat 5 hit Washington DC.

And the experiment continues ...

Ben,did you see Monday or Tuesday that Texas had rolling blackouts because of the heat? Their grid wouldn't handle the load.

Seems a little strange to be having this kind of heat in April.

I can hardly wait till hurricane season.

Ed makes a good point. A few decades ago we had the tobacco industry sponsoring lies to Congress etc. Today we see well-funded "think tanks" with their glossy web sites doing the same thing.

By the way, anyone notice how many tornadoes we have had this spring? Or the fact that we have already broken 100 in Kansas (96 in Wichita) Or that Australia has another Cat 4 hurricane (Typhoon) at its north coast.

The experiment continues ...

The "Bush" just came on TV and said he would make sure we weren't being gouged on gasoline.

No mention that his threats to go nuclear was the real problem.

How stupid do you need to be not to be able to understand what's driving-up the price of crude oil?

Screw the Zionists.

Let's make peace with the Arabs.

Guys, Nathan was asked to link to something and it reminded me of Ed Bradley's 60 minute bit of phony diplomas.

Misinformation abounds these days, so I thought I'd remind you all what you might be being linked to.

Thanks Brian for posting the links. I looked at the two that opened directly and they BOTH indicated that DU is bad stuff.

Ed - those fake PhDs can generally be spotted. I could let you read my Dissertation and provide some references to my publications in JACS, Chem Comm, Acta Cryst, etc etc etc. I'm afraid they make rather dull reading though. I am all too familiar with the fake ones.

WShat the reports said to me was this. DU poses a significantt health threat as a heavy metal that cause renal failure as well as neurological problems, and other toxic effects that lead to possible death. In addition, cancer is a likely outcome to DU exposure. The "free" article stated that the major routes of exposure during "war" activities...dust inhalation, dermal exposure, etc. do not appear to be major routes to acute illness. The point is...the research exists. Go out and get it. As with all R&D, you must read it all, or a significant part of it if you are going to have an informed opinion on the subject. I haven't and therefore don't claim to be able to make a completely rational decision. However, a simple search of the literature reveals a lot of articles with very 'frightening' names.

Ed, I don't know what your comment about the purchase of PhDs has to do with anything. You don't have to be a PhD to go out and find the pertinent literature. I think you'll find that most of it is labelled 'Zionist free', so you won't have any problem reading it.

I will be back later and comment on the link provided by Ben.

Until then, did you read it yourself Ben?

That first link didn't say anything about how DU munitions caused any of the claims here.

It actually recited many of the WHO's reports that DU munitions posed no real health threat.

So, I willbe back with those quotes from your link later.

So here we still are with no evidence supporting any of the wild claims about DU munitions.

Brian, Jr, Ben, You can buy diplomas, PH D's and whatever accreditation you wish in Jerusalem as Ed Bradley showed us on 60 minutes not long ago.

Even ones from UK Universities which do not exist.

Ed Bradly confronted the guy in Jerusalem and he denied having anything to do with it even though Ed Bradley showed him the cancelled checks and documentation with his Jerusalem address on them, following a trail of "drop-boxes" along the way.

Nathan should not have any trouble verifying whatever he says.

Aren't there a lot of sandstorms in that region Nathan?

Now I'm gonna state right out that I don't think you give a damn about the Iraqui people. After all you haven't proved that you do. No links or data do you have to show us otherwise.

But what about the American troops on the ground?

Do you care about them Nathan?

Ben? Are our troops at risk from exposure to this stuff? You know like they were adversely affected by widespread use of agent orange?

"A UN Environment Program task force found evidence of contamination from depleted uranium (DU) ammunition in Bosnia and Herzegovina. During its 1995 bombing campaign against Serb forces in Bosnia, NATO used armour-piercing munitions that contained DU, a slightly radioactive heavy metal. The UN task force identified three sites that it judged potential health hazards to people living nearby."

: Many poisons are excreted by the kidney, and in the process, like other urinary constituents, they become concentrated and thus reach levels in the tubular fluid that damage the lining cells of the tubules. Though the tubular cells die and are shed in the urine, regeneration can take place and the patient survive, if he can be maintained during the period of depressed renal function and is not killed by other effects of the poison. Poisons that can affect the kidneyin this way are numerous, but the main groups are heavy metals (mercury, arsenic, uranium)."

Nathan, it isn't hard to find information on the dangers of DU. Why don't you start by simply opening a book like an encyclopedia. The above came from the Encyclopedia Britannica 2004 edition. Took me about 3 minutes to find it.

Thanks ben,

Nathan?Since DU doesn't exist in it's pure form in nature, wouldn't it be fair to call it's casual use at the very least pollution and at the very worst playing dice with biology and nature? Is it not better to err on the side of caution?

Clearly this was not a problem in Iraq before our intervention there.

Is this part of our mission to make Iraq safe for Iraquis?

Do you really care?

Of course it does not exist in that form; the natural ratio material (actually a bit more hazardous) exists in low concentrations chemically bound in ores. In the natural form it is not likely to become finely divided and dispersed as fine dust.

Nathan - I "threw that little caveat" for the same reason a professional psychologist might have done the same on the thread on mental illness or an MD might do so when discussing the pros/cons of flu shots.

This question might be better addressed to Ben. I'm sure he will answer it. I trust his answer.

But I'll ask it of our advocate for the casual attitude about depleted uranium and of course the blogs wisest and most learned and just all around bestest poster.

Nathan? Does depleted uranium occur in large quantities in nature? You know like say dirt or sand?

Is it something I'd find fairly easily just lying around?

Ben and X,Good points all. I think, contrary to Nathans logic, we have narrowed the debate on DU to the point it is an internally hazard. Both the radiation, which must be flushed from the system, and the heavy metal properties, which is twice as toxic as lead, make it anything but neutral in its spent state. The toxicity is more pronounced in children than adults, ergo, it is bad for children.

If Nathan disagrees with that, then he is failing to see the impact DU has on non-combatants, children in this case, and is ignoring the collatorial damage it causes.

Now, Nathan dear, where is your opinion on cluster bombs after reading the links MOTHER provided. You did read them, did you not?
