Is an immigration bill needed?

Jacob Weisberg argues in this article that the House and Senate judiciary versions of immigration reform are so at odds that a compromise will produce nothing of worth. He writes: “As a bold alternative, why not pass no immigration bill at all? The status quo of American immigration is certainly flawed. We are turning a blind eye to widespread lawbreaking and probably driving down low-end wages, at least to some degree. On the other hand, the system works in its way. The most motivated, tenacious, and enterprising immigrants, who are therefore the most economically desirable, find a way around the barriers we erect. Once here, they help our economy sustain a high rate of growth and subsidize our Social Security system. In return, those who choose to stay have a chance to create better lives for their children. Do we really want to put an end to this deal?”
He makes some good points, but a lot of voters are demanding action on this issue. I doubt this approach would satisfy them.

    Melissa,

When you say the illegals are helping the social security system you are assuming they are being paid like everyone else. Many of them are paid under the table.

I find it interesting that the unions are not screaming about the jobs the illegal’s take away from the American worker. They say it is their job to protect American jobs. So where are they now?

If the illegals are so thankful to be here in America then why do they protest with the flag of Mexico? The country the fled from because they said the conditions were so bad and jobs were not available. If Americans are what they want to be then why not fly the American flag?

When adults encourage students to leave schools to protest they should be held accountable for their actions just as the students should be. There is a right way to protest.

If illegal’s really want to be in America and live the American dream then be just as proud to display the American flag not the flag of a country you ran away from.

I don’t think the United States has a problem with immigration, but they do have an inherit interest to Identify every person in this country and also they have an interest in assimilation into the American culture.

You can’t walk around this country being some invisible nobody. You have to be indentified. Also, you have to comform and assimilate into Americans. You can’t just have your own pocket communities and disregard the American Culture.

That is why the US puts a numerical limit on the amount of immigrants allowed into our country. We can’t have everybody who wants a job to come here. You have to give recent immigrants time to settle and assimulate, but if you have open borders then they won’t do that.

I wonder if Reagan said that before or after he signed the last amnesty.

This IS a problem that is not going to go away unless it is addressed.

For the sake of the future of the United States AND Mexico:

    Total deportation NOW

The Republicans will keep giving Mexicans amnesty until they represent a big enough voting block, that the borders will be virtually open. And, it would appear we are not too far from that point. I’d rather see them here without voting priveleges, less we end up like the Eurpean States, and soon face a future as the minority.

Actually, I prefer government inaction on this problem at this time. The current crop of politicians are way to inept to figure out an answer to this problem. Let’s wait for the time when we have people able to solve this complicated situation.

PREDICTION: There surely will be no solutions offered on this until after the 2006 elections. Anything offered now is posturing for the base. That is, assuming these clowns can figure out what their bases want — not an easy thing to accomplish for either party.

Deport all of them. Let em carry their Mexican flags in Mexico.Had they marched like that in Mexico City, they would have been gunned down like the protesters there were in the 60’sAfter what I watched on TV, I have no use for them whatsoever.

Milissa, this guy makes only one good point and that is they put a pittiance in SS. Otherwise they are a drag throughout our whole system (I don’t need to list them, you know them all). They should round them and all their little greasers up and send them back home.Fox is doing the same thing Andrew Jackson did, encurage American immigrants to move to Texas and after they flooded the area they took it over. They are so prolific the 20 million we now have will be 40/50 million in no time not counting the added millions crossing the border in the meantime. It wont be long with the help of the Mexican government they will take over this country without a shot fired.SEND THE BUMS BACK ! ! !

We do not have an immigration problem. The problem is with greedy businesses that make profit their god, irregardless of the cost later on, and with corrupt government that allow such thhings to happen. I cannot blame a person for making a better life for themselves. Situation reversed, we would all do the exact same thing. Make it un-profitable and illegal to hire the illegals and watch it change overnight.
