The decision by Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, to bow out of his re-election bid should help the GOP, a Wall Street Journal editorial said, but Republican politicians still have a big problem with demoralized voters. The editorial noted: “Their lack of meaningful achievements this Congress (beyond the two Supreme Court Justices), all of their spending, and troubles in Iraq have left conservative voters wondering what the point is to voting for the GOP. If Republicans want their supporters to show up on election day, they’ll need more of a message than wearing a ‘Speaker Nancy Pelosi’ fright mask.”
The editorial board’s suggestions: Extend the 15 percent capital gains and dividend rates, and either repeal or reduce the estate tax; reform congressional budgeting by passing the line-item veto, ending static revenue scoring and ending earmark abuse; increase health care choice, such as by allowing associations to form health-care risk pools; reform the endangered species law by requiring the federal government to compensate property owners for regulatory “takings” due to wetlands preservation or endangered species limits on development.
“The larger point,” the editorial argued, “is for Republicans to show that they are willing to fight for something.”

“…increase health care choice, such as by allowing associations to form health-care risk pools”.Strikingly similar to language used by Hillary Clinton some 12 years ago.
Sound advise…Hell everyone is for sale…name your price! Come on guy, I have a vote for sale. Any takers? Mommy needs a new pair of shoe!
Hey I got it, hold up a bright, shiny object! You know us voters just love to stare at bright, shiny objects!
“Strikingly similar to language used by Hillary Clinton some 12 years ago.”
We know how well THAT worked. But when the Republicans start talking about “choice,” check your wallet.
Writerdog,This should have been posted on this thread, but I screwed up:http://blogs.kansas.com/weblog/2006/04/kansas_as_big_a.html#comment-15868449
Go read. And I’ll go get another BIG cup of coffee. . .
thanks
They need to pass true oversight of Congress using an independent outside committee if they want to clean up their act. Fat Chance. The Culture of Corruption is more in to the band aid approach for reform. If they think restricting 527’s is going to save their butts, they’re wrong. Kind of smacks of Delay tactics to rig the game.
Kansas should be declared “A National Republican Refuge”, a place where down and out Republicans can find solace.
“The larger point,” the editorial argued, “is for Republicans to show that they are willing to fight for something.”They’ve already shown they’ll Fight for the Right to Party!
steve this is good:
“Kansas should be declared “A National Republican Refuge”, a place where down and out Republicans can find solace”
You mean kansas ISNT such a place already? Who knew…
Steve, the more I think about this, the more I realize you may be on to something here…
I suggest we build a BIG fence around kansas, round up all the illegal immigrants, confine them within the refuge and let them do the chores around the republican refuge while tom and the boys play golf. Sort of a penance for sneaking across the boarder.
I mean after all, we cant have all those republican rich folks cleaning their own houses and mowing their own lawns or actually PAYING A LIVING WAGE for those services. And I think, with time, the republicans seeking refuge could grow to like beans and rice and “all mariachi all the time” radio… FOR ETERNITY!
I do feel sorry for the hispanics cooped up with these fat pasty white guys with bad combovers and even badder attitudes. But hey, it sure would discourage any newcomers to know the road to freedom passes through the kansas republican refuge. A trip through the desert on foot in the summer would be a picnic by comparison.
Hee hee. Two birds with one stone. A republican refuge and containment of the immigrants. Maybe I can solve the FEMA problems. That is at least as good a solution as the preznit would come up with.
As for the WE editors’ suggestions, they sound awfully conservative. Somewhere to the right of Wingnuttia.
I hear Cindi Lauper singing “true colors”…
As long as the GOP is the party of the zionists, wall street and big oil then they will continue to languish. If there is a paleo-con takeover and the GOP takes a hardline on immigration and repudiates globalism and withdraws from NAFTA/CAFTA then there will be an uber resurgence!
Viva La Raza Blanco!!
KFG – I don’t think those were the Eagle Board’s suggestion; they were the WSJ suggestions.
Oh, sorry Ben, you are correct. I AM WRONG! There. (See? It isnt so hard to admit that!)
It makes perfect sense that the WSJ would be parroting the republican line.
I apologize, profusely, to the WE editorial board. Especially Phillip since I falsely accused him yesterday.
I humbly announce an admission of wrong doing and an apology to all.
I know, I know… conservatives here are desperately seeking Rhonda’s fainting couch. :)
Why is the GOP in trouble? Gee, could it be their association with hysterical yet bedwetting wingnut groups?
Or are they being persecuted for their religion? heheh. Who said yesterday it takes talent to pull off the persecuted majority ruse?

Check out a first hand report from the “god wants tom delay in office” conference held last week. I’m still waiting for the “war on tom delay” conference!
OFF TOPIC (somewhat, anyway):I am listening to the NPR/Slate noon show and they were trying to explain Scooter Libby’s defense on the Valerie Plame charge.
It is very convoluted, but goes like this: George W. Bush via his Vice President, Dick Cheney, informally declassified Valerie Plame’s secret status by mentioning this information to Scotter. And, wahla! Plame’s status is no longer secret and as a result there are no factual allegations against Mr. Libby.
Clearly, because George W. Bush and Richard Cheney are exempt from any criminal wrong doing – especially while engaging in actions that protect our country (surely outting Plame qualifies for that) – the only rational jury vote is one of “not guilty.”Right? And, if you disagree with this flawless logic, you are obligated to confirm that you love terrorists and hate our troops. Right?
Okay, top thread for tomorrow:http://www.wric.com/Global/story.asp?S=4736395&nav=0Rcx3aIN
That’s all I’m saying for now.
DD beat me to it. . . tip o’ the hat to NPR here, too.
Is this another case of Alfred E. Bush ” Fully understanding” something? If so, we’re doomed again- can’t afford much more of that.
Gster,Agree that Bush is “full of it”.
And I second Rage’s request for a thread on the authorization of the Plame leak. I always thought that this was what happened. But, silly me, I thought this would spread criminal responsibility upward, rather than be a defense that no criminal activity occurred. Surely, even Richard Nixon would have been ashamed to try this gambit. W. and friends continue their campaign to rehabilitate Nixon’s image in history.
It fits the pattern, DD:
“Forget about attorney-client privilege; we can’t afford to give it to terrorists. And if they’re not terrorists, they don’t need attorney-client privilege.”
“It’s not torture because our secret memos said it’s not torture and concluded the president has the right to ignore laws he doesn’t like.”
“Abu Garaib was a ‘few bad apples.’ How were we to know that these soldiers would listen to Military Intelligence, when they authorized the techniques, or the Defense Department, which actually made a list of them, or Rumsfeld, who openly declared (and later disavowed) that the Geneva Conventions didn’t apply?
“They don’t have any rights under the Geneva Convention; they’re not prisoners of war! They don’t have any rights under the Constitution; they’re not charged with any crimes! They don’t have any rights of habeus corpus; they are unlawful combatants! They don’t have any rights under U.S law; they’re in Cuba! They don’t have any rights under Cuban law; they’re under U.S. military jurisdiction!”
“We had to invade Iraq because Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. But it doesn’t matter that he didn’t. We had to invade anyway.”
“The Use of Force Resolution authorized the president to spy domestically, even if it didn’t actually say so. But if that didn’t authorize it, then a 26-year-old 4th Circuit decision based on different facts and law, and reaching unrelated conclusions of law, did. But it doesn’t matter, because he didn’t need Congressional authority anyway. Why are you even asking?”
I could keep going but their whipsaw logic makes me dizzy. . .
P.S. IMHO, NPR handed you a second gift, too: the Gospel of Judas discovered?
Note that I have no dog in this fight, assuming there’ll be one (I really don’t know). I find it as fascinating as anyone else.
Great posts y’all.
And, might I add, the silence from the right side of the blog is deafening.
As usual, the rudepundit nails it!
But a warning here… if you click on the link, be prepared for foul language…and lots of laughs!!

Check out this littel example of republican family values involving a republican candidate, Mu Quadafi, and the publisher of hank’s favorite washington newspaper.
Read the article and comments, but the pictures are priceless.

The other party may not be perfect, but the Republicans had total control of two branches of government for six years. And……….The proof is in the pudding? Republicans have no one to blame but themselves no matter how they try to shift the blame to everyone else.
