Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has been on the offensive, dismissing the generals who have criticized him as being opposed to change. But as this New York Times news analysis points out, that’s actually the same charge that several of the generals are leveling at Rumsfeld. They say that Rumsfeld has been so wedded to his quick-strike approach to fighting wars that he wouldn’t make the needed adjustments in Iraq when it became clear that more boots were needed on the ground to secure the peace.

Rumsfield is a cold war chicken hawk, he still is fighting the Soviets and their over whelming concept of warfare. It may work well with an enemy that is large and mechanized, but is crap when it comes to small and mobile. In this case “Fire with fire” only means that more gets burnt. But hey when Bush declares war on Iran it might work better.

I wouldn’t know Nathan – I am not in communication with the DNC nor do I get talking points from Talk Radio.
However, GroupThink HAS been an important topic in my MBA classes as a serious trap to be avoided. I see it frequently in corporate settings; I also see it IN SPADES in this administration.
Carter also fell prey to it as he tended to surround himself with advisors he was comfortable with. Same with Nixon and LBJ. Locally we have seen it with certain on the City Council. Skelton is trying to “break” it open and I salute him for it.

We can learn lessons from biology. There has never been a Michael Chrichton-imagined “virus” (Andromeda Strain, Outbreak) that can kill EVERYBODY. That’s pure fantasy. I know some Muslim males that won’t let their wives learn to drive. These males are anti-American. Civillian control of the military is very important. That said, it is important to pick that civillian with care.
Rumsfeld is a corporate bean counter. Like many in the bush administration, his holy grail is the bottom line.
Soldiers are “human resources” to a person like this. The dif is when you put a bean counter in charge of the military people tend to get killed instead of laid off.
He wanted to do more with less (not enough troops) “Productivity” thinking. He wanted to use the “available resources” (inadequate armor) as opposed to investing.
And the “product” had to come out on time. Intelligence (R&D) be damned.
