    Another open thread.

Don’t forget those meet up ideas.

Let’s see how big this blog is. At the end of your post, put the rough number of miles you live from downtown. In my case it is about 3

During the week, I work for myself. On weekends, I work for others. So, I have less flexibility on weekends but can do what I want most week days/evenings. But, would do what I could for the River Festival deal.

I live between and 3 and 4 miles from the River Festival events.

How to give your cat a bath:1. First, thoroughly clean the toilet, remove the topmost lid covering the tank of water, and turn off the cold-water hose to the toilet.2. Next, warm up 4 gallons of water to bath temperature. Flush, and add half the water to the tank.3. Then, raise both lids, add the rest of the water directly to the toilet bowl, and add an ample amount of shampoo to the water.4. Find a ball of string and entice the cat into the bathroom.5. Close the bathroom door, and continue petting the cat.6. In one swift move, pick up the cat, and drop the cat into the toilet bowl, closing both lids.7. Jump on top of the toilet lid to prevent the cat from escaping.8. CAUTION: Avoid placing any of your body parts near the edge of the toilet to avoid flailing claws reaching between the toilet and lid.9. The cat will self-agitate and generate ample sudsing action. (Ignore ruckus from inside toilet, cat is enjoying this.)10. Flush the toilet twice for a quick rinse or 4 times for an effective power rinse cycle, depending on the cat’s fur cleaning needs.11. Clear a path of open doors from the toilet to outside, and then jump off of the lid. CAUTION: Jump away from the bathroom door.12. The now-clean cat will rocket out of the toilet to the outside. Air dry time: about 20 minutes.

KFG,I hope before too long you check in from the (e)manual labor I suspect you’re doing right now.

I wanted to tell you that your John Prine lyrics, motivated me to get more Prine on a format that would be accepted by the equipment I have today. I got the original Atlantic Records recording _John Prine_ by John Prine – 1971. It has all the old favs on it: “Illegal Smile”, “Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You . . .(you know the rest)”, and my personal favorite “Sam Stone”. (never owned this one before – it is great and I am listening to it now as I write).

Prine is a genius. No doubt about it.

No, Prine is an effing genius!!!

KFG for her tater salad, Tara because everyone wants to meet her, and CM because he laughs at my jokes! Yeah I know, none of them are conservatives. I do not know how far any conservative who wants to come must travel. We must accomodate them too. Downtown will be busy. I am thinking Watson Park. It is within a few miles of downtown, has grilling facilities. I am thinking an afternoon. The last meet up was in the evening, hurriedly put together, and complicated by cold weather. An early and lingering afternoon accomodates as many as possible and allows for greater inter action. Thoughts?

Tara and Crusader X (and anyone else who cares),

True story: in 1989-1990 Nirvana had the Sub Pop Records practice room across from mine at the Dutchman rehearsal space in South Seattle. I only met ‘em once; Colbain seemed shy and mousy, Novaselic arrogant and full of himself. Guess he had a right to be. Since my band at the time played speed metal, we were pretty much beneath contempt.

Nirvana was auditioning drummers at the time, since Chad Channing had just left. A semi well-known friend of mine tried out (Andy Davenhall), but once Dave Grohl came on board they were off to the races.

Ah, good times. Today (April 15th) is my 38th birthday, so I feel compelled to wax a bit nostalgic. The Seattle of my youth in the late 1980’s / early 1990’s was such a fun scene. It really made an impact on the world, and I’m so proud to have been a part of it. All gone now. Makes me sad to go home, what with everyone who’s died, lost battles with booze and drugs, or been stricken with mental illness. The close-knit, small music scene, where everybody knew everybody and were a part of something–that’s gone forever.

Having said all that, and gotten all verklempt, there is NO way I would choose to be in my late teens/early twenties again. The life I have now is the life I only dreamed of then.

Know anything about H.R.4167? The National Uniformity For Food Act. Probably not. It was passed without benefit of a public hearing. It effectively repeals more than 200 state food safety and public health protections.

What it does is disallow states from writing into law any measure stronger than federal law concerning food. It also repeals any state law already on the books. The food industry spent $81 million for passage of this law. This law would also laws protecting consumers from chemical contamination of fish, health protection standards for milk and eggs, and warnings about chemicals or toxins such as arsenic, mercury and lead.

So enjoy your next meal courtesy of the current congress, making them, along with this administration, the worst congress ever.

Mixed feelings here JM. If I could believe that FDA would hold to the highest standard then I could favor such uniformity. That would serve to facilitade commerce among the various states. Unfortunately, the FDA has not shown itself to be a particularly good watchdog.

Ben,I think the FDA has more than proven itself to be in bed with pharmaceuticals and the food industry, so getting quality laws written by the congress currently in power reminds me of the “rose colored glasses” outlook on things.

The new law proves that. It throws out ALL of Californias’ laws concerning carcenogens. Totally ridiculous.

    Both parties do it

An article in The Topeka Capital-Journal, which was referred to in an April 6 Eagle Blogatorial item, was incomplete and misconstrued.

In my remarks to the Kansas Republican Assembly, I referred to how I had asked a third-grade Sunday school class, “What do you call those people who say one thing and do another?” The Topeka reporter only reported the little boy’s response: “Democrats.” I corrected the boy and told the class: “Anyone, Republican or Democrat, who says one thing and does another is hypocritical.”

Before I told the story to the crowd that evening, I also gave a point of context. This Sunday school class had nothing to do with politics. It happened to be the first Sunday after an election a few years back, and what this little boy blurted out was what he was hearing at home.

As you can see, this isn’t a joke, but really a gut-check reminder that anybody (including all the current candidates), regardless of party affiliation, is subject to hypocritical behavior if he has said one thing and done another.

Ken,You are indeed correct that it is a serious problem. But it has been going on for so long that the people (read voters) are getting immune to it. Why else would they be putting the same people back into office over and over again?

JR stated earlier that the average voter is lazy, knows little about the candidate he or she is voting for, and could generally care less, as long as the candidate is representing his or her party.

Being as I live in Missouri, I know little about you or what you stand for. But if you were running in my state, I would know your shoe size before I voted for you, and I would expect if you want informed voters, you would agree.

Thanks for posting. It’s not too often we get a political candidate willing to venture here, especially a Republican one. If nothing else, you got huevos. It will be interesting to see some peoples response.

Alice in Chains = old pals. Sean K and I experienced that mystical hookup that can sometimes happen b/t bassists and drummers. When Mike Starr left the band, I heard that Layne suggested me, but Jerry Cantrell and I weren’t musically compatible, so no go. Probably just as well. I didn’t have the necessary physical attractiveness nor the appetite for substances.

Hadn’t heard of the No WTO combo; at the time of WTO I was still in Memphis doing grad school. But this looks really cool. And I know Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney) pretty well; he produced the second demo for my band that got us signed. Great guy. Here’s his website, by the way: awesome phantasmogoria of Seattle memorobilia (sic?).

I-70 is a man-made river to the delta formed by Salina for western Kansans, and thus much easier on the 3-4 hour drive (!- would you drive half that far?!?-!) to be endured by our western Kansas readers.

Which are comprised by kfg alone, maybe.

Under any circumstance, if the meet-up must occur, then for *me* it cannot occur during Wichita’s RiverFest.

As for food: Well, I kinda suck as a cook, though some of my “experiments,” amazingly, turn out well. If I can’t come up with a guaranteed yum, I’ll probably bring something boring and predictable.

Just finished listening to “The Link” on T-95, an amazingly open metal show, considering their regular programming’s tightly controlled paylists (sic).

You guys are all too funny. Flike, you are so kind…. but I hope you are not disappointed in me in person. I am just an average, garden variety (heheh), short, gray haired farmer dyke with a bad attitude.

But I also play guitar (muy poco, y muy mal) and piano, and I first went to college as a trumpet player. Now I just play the computer keyboard and John Prine on CD. :)

DD, you warm my heart with your praise of His Prineness. Sam Stone is the saddest song ever written. We should ALL be listening to it again.

Heheh. MOTHER, your appearance will be most welcome. I can do a KILLER wang dang doodle, all night long!! You know I am built for comfort, I aint built for speed. I love dem muddy waters. heheh.

I have been known to feed chickens blue corn. That way, when their faces turn red, they look purple. Of course I have blue chickens in a red state! Did anyone think otherwise?

I dont really care about the time. When you are self unemployed, it doesnt really matter:)

One last thought. Tara, if you EVER look like hell, I dont think I can take heaven….

I am planning on attending – checked the calander and that (miracle of miracles) is available (unless the chillin didn’t put his activities up there- and that’s an entirely separate kettle of fish).I’d love to meet EVERYBODY!!(I might try to throw my voice to see MOTHER slap someone tee hee)

That’s why you bring disposable cups to pour the beer into- so the cops don’t see the beer right off ;)
