More on Morris and the monster

Kansas City Star columnist Mike Hendricks did a riff on the Flying Spaghetti Monster incident at Wichita’s Stucky Middle School. That’s when, as first reported in The Eagle, conservative State Board of Education member Connie Morris tried to demand that the logo of the anti-evolution parody FSM be removed from a science classroom door. Hendricks acknowledged that it might have been impolite or improper for the parody to be in a school. But, he said, “there’s another case to be made, too. That Morris and fellow members of the board’s wing nut coalition deserve to be mocked for what they’ve done to the state’s reputation.”

What’s wrong with RiverFest?

Wichita River Festival officials said this week that they’ll let the public and media officially call the event “RiverFest” this year as part of 35th anniversary celebrations.
Gee, thanks. But is there some reason we can’t just use RiverFest permanently? After all, it’s what people already call the event, and RiverFest is much snappier than the clunky official name.
Don’t you think?

Competition comes to cable TV in Kansas

One bipartisan success story of the 2006 legislative session was the cable TV competition bill, which Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed April 7 and touted at an event Thursday. It updates the state’s cable franchising law as of July 1 to allow more competition by AT&T and other companies. That should mean more choice and better value for cable watchers, as local franchise agreements are phased out in favor of streamlined statewide ones. Interestingly, the initial opposition from cable companies and cities largely evaporated as lawmakers ensured that their interests were protected in the final bill. All in all, the process worked as it should. Too bad that can’t always be the case in Topeka.
