One of the questions sure to hang on after the Dubai deal’s collapse is whether it will do any lasting political damage to Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. Even as she was blasting the proposal for a United Arab Emirates company to take over operations at six U.S. ports, her husband was advising the United Arab Emirates behind the scenes on how to close the deal. And he earlier took its money for his presidential library and speaking engagements. Nobody says a husband and wife (least of all the Clintons) must function as one on all things, of course, but the episode doesn’t exactly enhance Hillary’s credibility as a national security watchdog.

Bob Dole and Libby are at odds over the port deal. Bill and Hillery are at odds. I am so glad my wife and I agree on everything!(She made me say that)
But how could Hillary not have KNOWN about Bill’s involvement in this deal?Fun using this same argument against such a superior intellectual being as Hillary as it’s constantly used against Bush who is so clearly not smart seeing how he doesn’t know exactly when, where and how terrorists will attack or hurricanes will be the worst in the history of the country.
Hey Joeblow….Remeber Monica?
When Hillary becomes President, then you can hold her to the same standards as we hold the President.
Oh, she’s not the President?
So stop obsessing about the Clintons.
And if we’re going to have this kind of red-meat thrown to the Clinton-haters, how about a thread on the Bush family ties to Saudia Arabia and China . . . which is why we never hear about “democratizing” them.
” but the episode doesn’t exactly enhance Hillary’s credibility as a national security watchdog.”
Neither does the fact that her husband gave the Chinese the technology needed to launch a satelite into space, or hit us with a nuclear missile.
Weird that I was on the side of Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter on the Port terminal issue. When the racist leftist of the Democratic and Republican Party vowed to keep the UAE from a business deal.
I guess that makes me more informed than the average person.
Huh? The Republican Party has radical leftists in it? name one.Almost all of the Republican members of congress were against this deal.
Lib, are you STILL obsessing over investments in China and blaming GW’s family for that when most of the Fortune 500 are investing in the largest and fastest growing market in the world?
Ahhh, yes..you were in China a long time ago, makes you the expert in international economics.
This is a strange accusation, even for you. You imply that they are doing something wrong, when hundreds and thousands of businesses are investing in China.
PL,”When Hillary becomes President, then you can hold her to the same standards as we hold the President.”
That is one of the first real cop-outs I’ve read from you. Hillary is a public figure by virtue of her being a senator from New York. Bill is still in the public eye by virtue of his being involved, as a psat president, in the port deal.
As such, they can be held to any scrutiny the public wishes. She has made it known the presidency is her goal, so why not explore the deals shes into before she becomes president. If more were known about Bush, and his lack of leadership, do you think he would still have been elected president?
“So stop obsessing about the Clintons.”
No one is obsessing, just pointing out facts ( and conjecture, which is the political norm). It seems every time someone mentions the Clintons, Liberals go nuts. Why is that?
JM–Bubba Bill hasn’t been President for six years. Get over it.
Heckler–I’ve never set myself up as an expert on China, although unlike you I have lived there, I speak some Chinese, and I’ve studied the history.
I’m not against foreign investment anywhere as long as that doesn’t undercut our American values in freedom and democracy.
You notice that in the SOTU address barely a month ago, Bush pointedly mentioned IRAN as a country that needs democracy (they have a kind of democracy actually) and completely ignored the billion people living in China who died in Tianamen Square demanding democracy.
Funny choice of examples, isn’t it.
Oh I hate doing this but…. It would appear that Bill Clinton was one up on G.W.Bush.
He knew about the port deal long before Bush did. I have a new found admiration for Clinton, but old habits die hard. As for Hillery…No way…Sorry guys…No way!
PL,”JM–Bubba Bill hasn’t been President for six years. Get over it.”
Get over what? I could care less if Bubba is written about in a good or bad light. Get over it yourself.
I ask again: why do you liberals get so up in arms whenever Bubba is mentioned by someone other than a liberal? Is it like a sacrilige to mention him? Ya’all are so touchy about it, it tickles my funny bone.
Oh, and a billion chinese did not die in Tianamen Square. But I do get your point and agree. The answer is, of course, money: we get it from china, although the trade deficit with them is out of this world, and we get nothing but oil from Iran . . . gee, go figure.
Hmmm . . . Clinton knew about the port deal before Bush? And he didn’t tell Hillary? Or did he, and Hillary waited until the deal came out, backfired on Bush, then hit him with her purse? She is a conniving devil, isn’t she? Hey, just thinkin’ outloud:-)
Well I am no great fan of Bill Clinton. He is most lilely the best REPUBLICAN president in recent memory.
Uh Heckler? Clinton only eased government regs as to companies that HAD missile technology. YOu know about easing government regs right? That is what your party is all about including this port deal! It was the profit seeking COMPANY that sold the secrets you speak of to China.
But I give you an out on that Heckler, cause your buddy raptor posts that investing and selling out to China is a good thing!
And then there is Joe. HELL he vindicates BOTH of you. Your arguements are bad and a stretch at best. But at least you try. Ol’ Joe just posts that he is smarter than most of the people in his own party and 80% of Americans at large. While you search for comparisons to Clinton to validate or excuse bush, Joe Williams simply regards bush and any decision bush makes as unquestionable and anyone who questions bush decisisons as uniformed.
This was a bad deal. It aint over either. Dubai ports says it will “transfer” ownership. That is not what America demands. The House vote will hopefully kill this deal this week.
Oh but I didn’t post the thread.
Bill and Hillary…..Libby and Bob Dole….America at large and the neo con nuts. It’s as ever politics. Find a place to make the noise that gets ya heard. Hillary has a voice to make a dif, Bill does not. Libby has a voice to make a dif, Bob does not.
There is nothing that was good about this deal save it may wake Americans up to the fact that America at large is for sale to the lowest bidder.
This makes me wonder if the Clintons — and most other politicians of either party — have any core beliefs and principles they hold dear, or if they do whatever is politically expedient at the moment.
KCL,I think you answered your own question.
For the record, if 2008 came down to Hillary vs McCain, I probably wouldn’t vote for either one.
If it came down to Hillary vs Bill Frist or heaven forbid Sam Brownback, I vote against them and by voting Hillary.
I’m not a fan of Bill or Hillary. They were successful–they weren’t and aren’t good for our country in a lot ways.
However, there’s no comparison between the venal sins of the Clinton’s and the MORTAL sins of George W. Bush and his father.
So, Lib..
Let me get this right. You are claiming then that because GW (or his father) invest in companies that are investing in China “undercut American values in freedom and democracy?”
You have repeated your attack for Chinese investments as if it is a horrible thing yet other than grand statements, you have nothing to offer.
But, I forget. If GW or his father have anything to do with anything, then it is bad.
His failure to mention China during the SOTU is an obvious plot, there is a huge conspiracy, yes?
I am not saying that GW is great, but your mindless attacks are without grounds.
