I have been waiting for one of these open blogs. I’d like to make use of it for a little experiment.

I’m curious as to just how many folks visit here. It would be interesting to know just how large this forum is.Also, I’m sure there are folks who come here just to read and rarely if ever post. It would be interesting to know how many of those folks we have.So if you read this post and feel like participating, just type something to this thread. It can be anything your name, your political leaning, favorite founding father, whether your a dog or cat person just something to get your screen name on the thread.

I’ll keep count and share my results.

Thomas Jefferson is my favorite founding father.PS: He did not diddle Sally Hemmings!

“A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks.”

There is an American Library Association award for those promoting sunshine in government named in his honor and awarded each year on his birthday. This year’s winner is Steven Aftergood.

A lot of people thought Madison (also known as the father of the constitution – though he himself objected to that title) was dour, but everybody liked his buxom and extroverted wife, Dolly Madison.

This is funny. When I was eating dinner with my wife this evening describing the various people on the WE Blog – I said something to the effect – that except for the small thing of Ian being a white supremacist, he seemed like a pretty nice guy. My wife thought that line was pretty funny. But, as you guys may know – it is somewhat true. My poor spouse is still giving me suspicious looks, though.

I don’t know of any shelters on the North side by the range or anywhere else…

The range at lake afton is North of Mcarthur by the observatory. I was talking about the range at Cheney reservoir before which is on the North West corner.

DD, I’d love to attend Hank’s hoedown. I would attend, too, but I rarely get home from work before 7pm. I may try to drop by, but if I do, well, it will be dark, most folks will be gone, and therefore I haven’t RSVP’d because it would be foolish for Hank and Nathan to include my consumption in their event planning.

At any rate, I would like to extend a very warm “thank you” to Hank and Nathan, as well as KFG for reaching out band-wagonwise (western Kansas!). I hope yall have lots of fun. DD–you are one of my favorite posters, and not just ’cause you know about Hays! You said:

“except for the small thing of Ian being a white supremacist, he seemed like a pretty nice guy”

That reminds me of the saying “other than the small incident Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?”

I have freuently said that I sometimes feel guilty for liking Ian. But dammit, he is funny, and whether we like it or not, he does make some good points. Of course I dont condone racisim, but I confess, I would like to meet Ian. I wish he were attending the picnic.

I think we could make a pact that “what goes on at the picnic stays at the picnic”. No pictures, and if anonymous posters or silent readers want to attend, they should have no fear.

The “other than that Mrs. Lincoln . . .” was a good analogy. But so is the Perry Smith line “I thought Mr. Clutter was the nicest man I ever met, right up until I cut his throat” . . .Certainly darker, but also an exammple of profound ambivalence.

I hear many people refer to bush and his ilk as “rght-wing” and “conservative” and that is false! These noe-cons are statist, leftist, jueo-troskyites and the following article is a great expose!

Neoconservatism, a Treacherous Hoax(by James Owens – February 2004)Not only treacherous in its brazen hijacking of the traditional “conservative”identity, the “neoconservative” movement has become a national-security threat asdevastating in its potential harm to America as was the USSR nuclear arsenal of the “coldwar” decades. These charges are severe but, I think, warranted.Identity Theft, grandiose styleNow that we know what they are, from Irving Kristol’s recent “tell-all” article inThe Weekly Standard,1 we must marvel at the monstrous fraud and sheer arrogance of theneocons (neoconservatives). For several decades they have hoodwinked the Americanpeople with a fake identity, posing as bone-deep conservatives while orchestrating at thenation’s highest centers of power, very quietly and “under the radar,” an agenda totallyopposite all traditional conservative principles. A rough summary of the platforms whenstripped of rhetorical euphemisms and the essentials laid bare:

Traditional conservatives strive to conserve the original America, the corevalues of America’s founders as explicitly enunciated in the American Constitution:* minimum power granted to the central (Federal) government* maximum power reserved to the states of the Union* minimum intervention in foreign affairs (“avoid foreign entanglements”)* fiscal discipline and balanced budgets* taxation minimal – and only for nationwide infrastructure (railroads, etc.)* a homogeneous community of Euro-white people, culture and customs* primacy of each citizen’s individual freedom, rights, property and privacy.

Neoconservatives, in stark contrast and now made “Kristol clear,” advocate:* maximum power shifted to the central “Big government” and “statism”* minimum power permitted to the 50 states* maximum foreign intervention, including military, to spread democracy andgain hegemony throughout the world (“New World Order” globalism)* fiscal indifference (deficits and national debt irrelevant)* taxation maximized – to fund a welfare state and foreign intervention* a multicultural society promoting nonwhite immigration* primacy of the Federal government as absolute to insure public order, safetyand national security, individual freedoms secondary and expendable.http://home.netcom.com/~owensva/neocon-y.html

I would like to change the subject here dramatically. I think the NCAA Selection Committee missed a good opportunity to have a highly-rated regional game in the Tournament. That would have been to put WSU where they put Bradley – against KU. Think of the local ratings for that game – and with 16 games per day it is regional where it matters the first weekend.

Gas prices up even as crude goes lowerHigh demand and government rules mean they’ll stay up

(CNN) — Prices jumped nearly 11 cents over the past two weeks to $2.35 for a gallon of regular-grade gasoline, even though the price of crude oil dropped, a national survey said Sunday.

The hike obliterates the 9-cent drop that had begun January 20, said Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the Lundberg Survey.

“Those five weeks of declines were due largely to our being at the bottom of our gasoline-demand curve,” she said.

The price rise came even as the cost of a barrel of crude fell from $62.91 on February 24 to $59.96 last Friday — a 7-cent-per-gallon drop.

Lundberg said an expected increased demand for gasoline in the spring and new government gasoline formulation requirements conspired to drive up prices at the pump.

Prices are not likely to fall any time soon, she said.

“With our demand building and those new recipe requirements coming into effect, gas prices will most likely surge much higher,” she predicted.

“Some of those regulations are seasonal in nature; they become more severe and more expensive as the weather gets warmer.”

Prices in Newark, New Jersey, were the lowest, at $2.15 for a gallon of regular; they were highest in Honolulu, Hawaii, at $2.63 per gallon, she said.

The survey was carried out March 10. The previous survey was carried out February 24.

The following are some other cities’ prices for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline:

    •Charleston, South Carolina: $2.19

    •Salt Lake City, Utah: $2.25

    •Dallas, Texas: $2.28

    •Atlanta, Georgia: $2.29

    •Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: $2.32

    •Las Vegas, Nevada: $2.38

    •Cleveland, Ohio: $2.39

    •Los Angeles, California: $2.55

I heard a story on NPR today that gas is projected to cost 30 cents more (than the current cost) per gallon during the summer.

There was once a web site, I’ll see if I can find it, which was a scatter plot of Bush’s approval ratings and the cost of gasoline. It was nearly a perfect inverse correlation. As gas prices went up, Bush approval went down.

Joke told by Bush at a recent journalist roast:”I [GW Bush] pointed out to Dick Cheney that my approval rating was 38%. He asked me what my secret was.”

Favorite President. That’s a difficult question. Modern area? Reagan.

I like what Nixon did for blacks: he opened more colleges and schools than any other president. He started OSHA. But by surrounding himself with the people he did, he etched his legacy. Very bad.

Carter was over his head; too honest for Government service.

Clinton? Great statesman, but thats about it for him.

Kennedy? I would have loved for him to have lived out his presidency. That was a very turbulant time, and I think he handled it very well.

The Bush duo? Could have done better with just about anybody else.

I’ve been fortunate to see several great presidents in my lifetime. Eisenhauer, while not a great statesman, was the right man at the right time. Kennedy is a hard call. Credit him with the drive that put a man on the moon. I wonder about the lost potential. Kennedy had the morals of an ally cat and may have had connections with the mob.I think history will be kinder to Nixon than we are. Say what you will, but Nixon opened up China. I was in the Marine brigade that sat off the coast of China when Nixon went there. If something had gone wrong, we were fully prepared to go in and get him out (and probably start WWIII). Those were scary times; China was a scary place. That we never went to war with China is a credit to Nixon.Carter, while a good man, was a lousy president, read: National Malaise.Reagan made us feel good about ourselves. He had the good fortune to be in office when the Soviets fell apart. He was kind of a futz, but he did no great harm.Bush 1 was a place holder. Too bad his own party turned him into a whipping boy.Clinton was a great statesman and an intellectual powerhouse. Too bad about his morals. I’d vote for him again.Bush 2? As has been often said, WORST-PRESIDENT-EVER!

“60 Minutes” had a dozen Oil Executives each showing over 14 billion in profits each and none offered a reason why oil was hovering close to 70 dollars a barrel again.

Do Oil Companies only hire people who don’t understand market forces? Who have no idea why the wholesale price of their product will increase or decrease? Do not understand the very principle of supply and demand?

Just a few years ago oil was 30 dollars a barrel, and a few years before that 9 dollars a barrel and supply and demand was the same as now, so why the jump in price?

Have supplies dropped? No, they haven’t, so has demand dropped, no it hasn’t, so what’s up?

Are the United States and Israel threatening to bomb Iran? Yes they are, so that would lesson supply? Yes it would. And because oil traders trade on the open market, would that drive the price of crude oil up, expecting shortages? Yes it would.

Does Iran need to be bombed? No, it doesn’t. Does Iran have “the bomb?” probably Not, but they live next to Pakistan who does and could probably borrow some if they needed to. So why all the fuss?

Israel wants the United States to give it all the Middle East oil, but a gazillion Arabs don’t want that to happen.

The best plan: Israel needs to be pushed back across the green-line, defanged and the United States needs to form a Palestinian States from the complete West Bank and Gaza.

Then bring all our soldiers home and find something more productive to do { fix New Orleans, SS, etc. etc. }.

This, while Israel attends greed-management school.
