Now that the ‘war on Christmas’ is out of season

It’s an election year, so expect to see more events such as the “War on Christians and the Values Voter 2006” conference today and Tuesday in Washington, D.C., where religious conservatives are rallying grassroots Christian soldiers with apocalyptic visions of “savage and accelerating” attacks on Christians by Hollywood, the American Civil Liberties Union, the judiciary and the liberal media.
It’s no surprise that Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., is one of the main speakers at the event. He’s shown that he knows who punches his political meal ticket. But by peddling this brand of culture war divisiveness and paranoia, he risks undermining his crossover appeal down the stretch.

I’ll have to weigh in on this one later. I gotta go for now.

I gotta go find a pregnant woman to drag into an abortion clinic. After that I’m gonna crash the service at Immanuel baptist, nail the door shut from the inside, and talk about science while I force everyone to look at naughty pictures. I need to finish up before the wedding that afternoon. This buisness guy I used to work for is marrying his money at city hall. I’m gonna protest.

I have to be to the adult theatre by 8 for my mandatory skinflick.

Oh spare us. If the majority of Kansans are willing to put up with this it is what is called ‘democracy.’ This is a notion that the liberal, or democrat, or prograssive (whatever title you try to hide behind this week) left like to throw around like some Harry Potter spell!

Are you saying that our form of government should be something else? A republic perhaps? Oooops. We have that and you cry foul there too. I relish the fact that in actual political struggles the party of no responsibility cant get a decent foothold without the use of a purchased judiciary.

Face it, you just cant handle the fact (I think 70% would be close enough to call it a fact) that your idealogy is worthless and noone is interested in you bringing your special brand of crap in to pollute our sandbox.

Dont like the way politics works here? Try France. Try Germany. Or China. Try North Korea. I’m sure they would love to have some whiny pouting malcontents to use for target practice.

Have a nice day. See you at the polls.

    Don,

‘The party of no responsibility’? Coming from a Wingnut who supports Mr. ‘Accountability Moment’ himself, that’s a laugh.

When has W EVER taken responsibility for anything? Iraq? Katrina? The deficit? Anything.

GOP: same old same old. Ideas that were bad in 1929 and 1973, and that are just as bad today.

And considering that recent polling has the Democratic Party up by an average of 11% over Repukes, I’m confident that the exercise of democratic rights will get this country back on the right track.

See you at the polls, Don Murphy

Which is completely unlike posters who only highlight their cluelessness by attacking her without knowing her or even recognizing apparently the considerable assets she brings to any discussion.

For a Christian, using foul language is at least as acceptable as arguing disingenuously and with a self-serving standard of what counts as evidence. Don’t you think?

With respect to Brownback, his use of Christianity as a cultural bludgeon has very little to do with what I understand to be Christian humility. I regard his version of Christianity as politics and expediency. He’s nothing special. Just another sanctimonious, power-hungry fundo.

Justice Scalia flips the finger in church

BOSTON, March 27 (UPI) — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia startled reporters in Boston just minutes after attending a mass, by flipping a middle finger to his critics.

A Boston Herald reporter asked the 70-year-old conservative Roman Catholic if he faces much questioning over impartiality when it comes to issues separating church and state.

“You know what I say to those people?” Scalia replied, making the obscene gesture and explaining “That’s Sicilian.”

The 20-year veteran of the high court was caught making the gesture by a photographer with The Pilot, the Archdiocese of Boston’s newspaper.

All of us await your rationalization of your conservative heroes with baited breath . . .

    Damoon,

I also think divorce is wrong. Every church I have been to in my lifetime has always stood on divorce being wrong.

The church I am a member of now will not let people who are divorced be a pastor or hold a pastoral posistion.

This is a blog Damoon. I talk about the topics which are put here or come up.

Sorry that divorce has not been one of those topics.

When it is or if it is I will be giving my opinion on it.

PL: Since you mention it, I have a question that I hope that you can answer. Is Eugene Robinson straight or gay? I mean he did choose to marry a women, and fathered children. Straight right?

He then chose to adopt a homosexual life style, pursue higher church office, and caused all heck to break loose in the Episcopalian world. He now has a relationship with a man. Gay?

I honestly don’t know. I am not gay bashing but I want to explore the contention that homosexuality is something you are born with. It would appear that it was his choice to adopt the lifestyle.

I wonder if she was born a homosexual or if it was a revelation later in life?

I do not understand why anyone would argue that someone’s past marriage status is in any way a suitable indicator of his or her sexual orientation, especially given current Western civilization’s strong incentives to appear straight.

Good god, our president was spending a lot of resources telling all Americans we need a US constitutional amendment outlawing gay marriage, and not too long ago either.

If anything, I think that at best Outlander and Nathan are trying to condemn PL’s pastor (bishop?) and KFG for being honest with themselves or, perhaps, brave.

Seems like either ungracious behavior by the questioner, at best (both of whom seem to be in the vanguard of keeping up a Western appearance, a public face, of heterosexuality at any cost). At worst, a cheap shot.

flike: I am curious and ask what I think are legitimate questions. This does not constitute bashing. I honestly don’t understand how you can live under one sexual orientation and then decide to switch and then claim orientation it is genetic or inborn.

Also please explain why it is when someone removes themselves from gay orientation either by themselves or with a support group, this is looked down upon by the gay community as disingenuous. Why is OK to switch from straight to gay but not the reverse?

Just asking, but I think I know the answer to that one.

Outlander, from my gay friends and relatives I know that, although they always felt their gay orientation, many try to deny or overcome it by forcing themselves into heterosexual relationships, but keeping up the facade is just to difficult often leads to feelings of isolation, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. Coming out and being honest about one’s sexuality takes incredible courage and risks being rejected by family, loved ones, and society in general. Self acceptance is the key to finding peace and happiness. In my family, my nephew knew he was gay from the time he was a young kid, but he couldn’t accept it and choose to live in denial and was even married for 10 years and had a child, but as he matured, he could no longer keep up the lie. He went through hell and back but was finally able to accept himself and at age 50, he has been in relationship with the same person for 17 yrs now. He’s happy now and at peace with himself, finally.

With all of the harrassment gay people have to put up with, it’s no wonder they would try to deny their true feelings and try to appear heterosexual. Do you think anyone would choose to live a life where they are constantly targeted?Damoon, it’s sad that your nephew waiting 50 years before allowing himself to admit the truth, but better late than never. It’s sad that society deprived him the opportunity for true love for so long because of its riduculous hangups.I’m glad he’s finally at peace with himself.

Here’s an interesting quiz about taboos. It’s a clear way to see how the “ick” factor influences our decisions on moral behavior.http://www.philosophersnet.com/games/taboo.htm

Neither do I. I note though, that your question assumes the person (a) knows s/he is one way or another from the get go, and (2) that no spectrum of sexual orientation exists, that sexual orientation is black/white.

Why is OK to switch from straight to gay but not the reverse?–Outlander

I wasn’t aware that it’s a one way street. I am arguing that our society, peer pressure, etc., strongly prefers a heterosexual orientation. Seems to me reasonable to assume, therefore, that more homosexuals will “try on” a heterosexual lifestyle than heterosexuals will “try on” a homosexual lifestyle. Hence homo–>hetero changes are more suspect than hetero–>homo changes, given current incentives, because they’re more unlikely.

Opinions on this subject from an article in the Washington Post:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/28/AR2006032801632.html

    *********************************

“Certainly religious persecution existed in our history, but to claim that these examples amount to religious persecution disrespects the experiences of people who have been jailed and died because of their faith,” said K. Hollyn Hollman, general counsel of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty.

“This is a skirmish over religious pluralism, and the inclination to see it as a war against Christianity strikes me as a spoiled-brat response by Christians who have always enjoyed the privileges of a majority position,” said the Rev. Robert M. Franklin, a minister in the Church of God in Christ and professor of social ethics at Emory University.

White evangelicals make up about one-quarter of the U.S. population, and 85 percent of Americans identify themselves as Christians. But three-quarters of evangelicals believe they are a minority under siege and nearly half believe they are looked down upon by most of their fellow citizens, according to a 2004 poll.

In a luncheon speech yesterday, DeLay took issue with the “chattering classes” who think there is no war on Christians.

“We are after all a society that abides abortion on demand, that has killed millions of innocent children, that degrades the institution of marriage and often treats Christianity like some second-rate superstition. Seen from this perspective, of course there is a war on Christianity,” he said.

Ah the sweet scent of disagreement. Since I have been working (try not to go into shock anyone) I’ve missed most of this conversation. However, in response to the question about why homosexuality seems singled out as opposed to divorces, affairs, etc, let me say this:

Because homosexuals insist on getting their attention. You notice that people who think it is great to have sex with animals arent high on the target list. They are sick and demented, but since they dont insist of flagellating the public with it, they are left pretty much to their own perversions. I suspect that if gays and lesbians kept their business to themselves, the public would pretty much ignore them too.

I suspect such a notion will be largely lost on them though as they seem incapable of entertaining such thoughts.

I’m a Christian and I don’t really care if you say Merry Christmas, Happy Hollidays, or Season’s Greetings. That you were kind enough to offer any greeting is good for me.

A lot of our fundie friends spend their life with a chip on their shoulder begging somebody to knock it off.

“I suspect that if gays and lesbians kept their business to themselves, the public would pretty much ignore them too.”

I don’t get it, why wouldn’t anyone want to be treated equally and have the same rights as any other citizen of this country? Isn’t that what living in America is all about? Equal rights for eveyone? What about that don’t you understand, Don?If you want to focus on what’s damaging this country, look at the sky high divorce rates, kids growing up in the system, domestic violence, the addiction epidemic, unemployment, the failing education system, the high cost of gas, utilities, prescription drugs, and health care, etc. Why focus on an issue that is harmful to no one when there are so many other issues that are real concerns to us all?
