McClatchy keeping hands-off policy on editorials

FYI: Gary Pruitt (in photo), CEO of McClatchy Co., the newspaper chain that is buying Knight Ridder and The Eagle, was asked by USA Today if he expects the editorial opinions at the newspapers he is acquiring to reflect his views? “No,” Pruitt said. “That’s not how we operate. We will respect the editorial legacy of the papers.” That was also the policy of Knight Ridder. I’ve never received any corporate order or request that The Eagle take a particular position on an issue or endorse a particular candidate.

What a photo. Current McClatchy CEO? yeah right…

Bloody hell, that guy looks like he’s dead and been to a taxidermist, doesn’t he? :)

Gary, put aside the question of editorial content long enough to get a decent photo put in the Corp. folder, willya?

I’ve heard of stuffed-shirt CEO’s before, but out and out stuffed CEO’s?!?

    ;)

That’s too bad. About 75 percent of that newspaper staff is dead wood.

Why should he make changes? The Eagle does a great job…they’ve been telling us that for weeks now!

Too bad . . . I was hoping he would stop the all-right-wing all-the-time op ed columnists.

Cal Thomas–right-wing neoconKathleen Parker–right-wing idiotTrudy Rubin–right-wing PhiladelphianDavid Broder–right-wing pretending to be moderate

They’ll run any political commentator on the op-ed page, just so long as they’re right-wing . . .

Doonesbury is relevant political discourse. That Mallard Fillmore crap should go.

I certainly have had my differences of the Eagle, but I’m somewhat relieved to be able to still aim my arrows at local yahoos, thank you! ;-)

By the way, JR, did you know that Doonesbury used to be in the comics section (naturally enough)? Archconservative loons raised a stink about its political humor existing among the “funnies” (gee, that NEVER, EVER happens, right?–and if it does, well, “the enemy is us”).

So it was moved to Editorial. That still wasn’t enough for the polipolice; now the editorial page had a “liberal bias”! Hence, the introduction of the terminally unfunny Mallard Fillmore, to make the op-ed page fair and balanced.

Problem solved? Maybe. I met a good Christian woman who was upset at Doonesbury being next to the Daily Prayer! I knew the perfect solution: Put it in the comics section. . .

There’s a fine line between pleasing your customers and caving into a small nutbar faction. Guess which category this fell into?

I’m thinking Buzz Merritt was still Exec Editor then, which kinda makes it worse. . .he knew better. Which reminds that these are local people who I might run into at a grocery store. Keep it that way, McClatchy.

Great posts y’all. Dontcha just love the code speak for “we’re still gonna be all right wing all the time” at the WE. With just a tiny bit of Molly or Leonard to leven the heavy dough.

And joe blow, damned if I dont agree with you for a change. It has been really funny watching the WE staff run around with pre-puckered lips just waiting for the announcement of which hiney to kiss.

    After all, we’re No. 2…lololol.

The most craven right-wing cave-in came in the mid-80s, when Doonesbury was pulled for a week, for (get this!) having an “fantastic voyage” type expedition through Reagan’s brain. I don’t who the MORON in charge was then, but thanks for excessively pandering to your Republican base. It was a week that will live in hilarity.

DB was also pulled a few years later, when Trudeau had some fun with the issue of condoms. Buzz thought it was “tasteless.” I would loved to see Merritt’s face when he pulled a used condom outta the envelope! (NO, IT WASN’T ME! He wrote about it in his column. . .)

On the other hand, they endorsed Dukakis, and maybe even Clinton, too, though I don’t remember for sure. So things can change.

According to the McClatchy stock report, Gary Pruitt is 48 years old and is paid $2 million a year. The graph of McClatchy stock looks like the flight path of a jet plane rapidly approaching Wichita airport for a landing. If that trend continues, McClatchy stock will be worthless in two more years.

For many years, the KANSAS CITY STAR newspaper was owned by their employees — purchased from the husband of the daughter of the STAR’s founder, William Rockhill Nelson.

A creative idea would be for a local Wichita group of EAGLE employees and interested Wichita investor-citizens to organize to purchase the EAGLE at some advantageous point in the decline of the McClatchy stock.

My guess is that regardless of McClatchy’s comments about keeping the Wichita EAGLE and other newspapers in the group they purchased, in actuality anything and everything they own is for sale.

Perhaps the local sales tax could be raised another penny for three years to buy it! Remember, easy come, easy go.

I had a few hours :) last night to think about the perception by the left that the WE is right, and the perception by the right that the WE is left.

Seems like the syndicated people they publish are all right wingnuts except for Leonard and Molly. Ditto the letter writers. But the local editorial writers can SOMETIMES have a more liberal bent. Hence the different perceptions.

One thing you quickly learn in the newspaper biz, you will generally make NO ONE happy with what you write. I used to call that a successful day!

True, KFG, but Cal Thomas twice a week and Molly Ivins once every three months (if she writes about the environment or ag policy) is hardly fair and balanced.

That’s a quantitative difference that isn’t just in somebody’s perception.
