Judicial payback could hurt those seeking justice

More juvenile and destructive payback by our state lawmakers: Last week the Kansas House, still upset with the Kansas Supreme Court’s ruling on school finance, voted to cut $3.7 million in funding for judicial branches next fiscal year. The lost funding is equivalent to 17 days’ worth of expenses for the entire court system and could result in shortened workweeks — meaning that Kansans could face even longer court delays. “There’s a lot of resentment in the House,” said Speaker Doug Mays, R-Topeka. “Some people are willing to act on that resentment.” Apparently, with little regard for the consequences.

Dont like the constitution? Fire the judges. Then you can gleefully wipe your butt with the “g.d. piece of paper” that used to be the constitution.

How quickly can we turn “majority rules” into “tyranny of the majority”?

We dont need no stinkin’ three branches of govt! We dont need no stinkin’ checks and balances! We just need a 100% republican legislative branch.

I thought for a long time that Dougie May was just a whining child. More and more, though, I’m beginning to think he is sliding into being a GOPuke idiot.

But git…being a repuke plays so well to the kansas voters! You can hardly blame dougie for giving the wise voters what they want! Hell, what is it in ks, 60 percent still think the preznit is right on iraq!

Doug Mays on the floor of the ks house: “How many of them were there? What did they say? Which way were they going? I must know, I AM THEIR LEADER!!!”

Oh wait, that was governor leadership looking for votes in 06! I get them all so mixed up.

I dont understand why all of you folks who seem so disgusted with the awful republican kansas base dont move elsewhere. Do you just enjoy the complaining? Do you have no solutions other than to whine and moan because the majority of Kansans wont play with you?

  5. Posted March 21, 2006 at 12:46 pm | Permalink

Thanks to the wonderful Republican mentality of Wall Street, who thinks we’ll all make more money if nobody is working, none of us can afford to move.

Uh, don murphy…I think that is why Kansas is BLEEDING population. Everyone who can leave kansas is leaving kansas.

Pretty soon you and your ilk will have the state to yourselves. YOU get to be the last person leaving so will you turn out the lights?

I came to Kansas by choice from the land of fat teddy, kerry and the abominable barney frank and I love it here! I despise brownback and roberts but Kansans are waking up to the evil reality of the israel first, wall street first agenda of the neo-conartists!

The SOLUTION is not all that complicated.

    OBEY THE CONSTITUTION!!

PAY AS YOU GO FOR SPENDING!!!

    LISTEN TO YOUR OWN AUDITORS!!!!

Then you majority republicans wont have to fight with the courts. Or destroy them. DUH.

The juvenile display by our legislators is inexcusable. I will find documentation on who supported this.

The good news contained in an email from my Rep:

“Re: Senate Bill 461″This afternoon the Governor vetoed the bill.”

This was the bill that would have made it more difficult for older people to make workman’s comp claims. I don’t think the legislature has the votes to over-ride the veto.

KFG – You have got me to re-think my former adoration for our guv, but she did do the right thing this time. Peace.

    HI DD,

She DID do the right thing on worker’s comp. Thank goodness.

I dont think she will veto concealed carry in an election year. Maybe she is popular enough to do it and get away with it, but I dont think she will take the chance.

But I would LOVE to have her make me wrong. I would be gleefully wrong twice in a row.

Heck, I’d buy ya sushi anyway DD. :)

    DD,

I hope that Sebelius does veto the concealed carry bill. She should just come right and admit that she is against gun rights for law abiding citizens but in favor of benefits and sanctuary for filthy illegal immigrants!

Actually, I agree that the work comp bill was the wrong bill at the wrong time. Sometimes I wonder about the political acumen of our lawmakers.

    The bet is on DD!

I dont think too many people were burning with interest on workers’ comp, and she already threw the ks chamber a bone with the equipment tax break. The veto will make older workers happy as well as the base of traditional democrats and labor.

Concealed carry brings lots of votes with it. A veto there would be harder for her politicially and provide more bullets for her opponent to use in November. Her democrat base might give her a pass on concealed carry if she bows to the majority.

We’ll see how stiff that new-found backbone is and how long it holds up. Again, I’d sure be glad to be wrong.

DD: I wouldn’t read too much into it.

The Kansas Supreme Court overstepped their role when they substituted their judgement for that of the legislature. The message to the Supremes was that money doesn’t grow on trees.

KFG,I swear I had no foreknowledge, but I just heard on KAKE 10 news, the guv vetoed the concealed carry law. I will go Dutch at Kwan Court here on North Rock Road the next time you are in town. The place is great. I met my wife there on a blind date. She will want to come along, I am sure.

I’m telling ya, don’t count Kathleen out when it comes to having a moral compass. Bless her heart.

Good news sometimes comes in clumps. :-)

There is a difference between “a message” and profound pettiness. I hope the Repubs, don’t figure that out. They act as jerks at their own peril. I have not lost faith in Kansans yet.

    Got to this one late.

So, the judiciary insists that the legislature do its job and the legislature (Republicans anyway) throws a hissy and says “Yeah? Well we’ll just cut your funding! Nyah nyah”

Kinda what Republicans always do. My way or the highway.I crack the whip you make the trip. Take this job or shoveit.

    Ahhh kansas.

Oh Don? My mom won’t move. She has her yard the way she likes it. Not wanting to abandon her to the “tender mercies” of the feudal duchy that is Kansas, I’m stuck here for now.

ya best listen to what Farmgrrl says upthread. Kansas is becoming a state that people are leaving or planning to leave.

Well DD, I wondered if I had been set up!! LOL, I know you wouldnt do that.

Hmmm, so the spine did hold up. I think the veto will be overridden. Then it becomes about how individual legislators voted on it, and it will become campaign issue on that level. Will voters punish the legislators for how they voted on this issue?

Surely she is not throwing dem legislators under the bus at home to keep her traditional dem base with HER at election time! Nawwww, that dem base is too small and impotent to really matter. Must be a trial lawyer thing :)

Too bad she couldnt find that newly minted moral compass or her spine last year with the hate amendment.

Hey DD, a bet is a bet. I am glad, if not gleeful to be wrong here. I will buy when we have sushi. And I would love to meet your wife! I’ll let ya know when I am headed your way.

Yea, I knew that is what you meant. I’ll take my lumps on the bet. I absolutely know you did not set me up and there was no fix…no matter what the appearance! I just thought it was all funny, and I dont mind being wrong on this.

I hope I am wrong on school finance too.

I wont be down there for several weeks, but I will email you ahead of time so we can set up some sushi slurpin’. And again, I cant wait to meet your wife!

Yer a good guy DD. Not to mention smart as hell.
