Why is Osama living large in Pakistan?

Osama bin Laden is alive and well and living large in Pakistan, according to a Washington Post commentary by Pakistani journalist Ahmed Rashid, who charges that the Bush administration and its Pakistan “ally,” Gen. Pervez Musharraf, aren’t doing nearly enough to catch him. Far from cowering in a cave, bin Laden probably is living quite comfortably in the friendly Pashtun region of Pakistan, according to various sources.
After five years, why can’t the world’s last superpower and its allies find the 6-foot-5-inch al-Qaida leader and his lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, whose latest taunting videos only underscore the failure to bring them to justice?
Apologists trot out the case of abortion clinic bomber Eric Rudolph and how long it took to catch him — but Rudolph wasn’t the subject of a manhunt this massive, involving every resource of government.
Does it matter whether we catch bin Laden? Yes. As Rashid observes, “Every single day that bin Laden stays alive is a day that inspires the extremists who protect him and join his ranks.”

Leaving Osama bin Laden uncaught has two benefits for TeamBush:

    1. it keeps the Americans in continual fear that when they least expect it, this diabolical genius will hit us again. Fear = support our leader, right or wrong.

Just look at the number of “orange alerts” before the last election which even the FBI/CIA say were unjustified. Where are those orange alerts now?

    2. Catching OBL means putting him on trial. Do you think he could reveal anything–in open court which could not be censorsed–that would show that TeamBush were criminally negligent in their anti-terrorist NON planning?Or the embarrassing ties OBL has to Bush family friends in Arabia in the UAE, say?

Leaving him alone works better for Bush’s goals.

BTW, remember those anthrax attacks through the mail? There’re are only about half a dozen people who have the knowledge and the access to highly milled “weaponized” anthrax, and they’re all associated with right-wing super-nationalists.

Are we surprised that no one has been charged with this crime, especially since their murder spree fit so well into Bush’s ultimate war goals?

I think you’re stretching it with the antrhax right-wing connection. You must give some evidence for that to hold any weight. As far as UBL goes, I’ve always been wondering how the “most wanted man in the world” has always managed to elude capture despite the near destruction of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Makes your idea that the military isn’t looking for him hard enough more plausible.Of course, our attention has been diverted because of the Iraq war.

The line we use to hear about not going in to get Osama in Pakistan was that it would de-stabilize that country which would be a problem in terms of our interests. Now we hear, in reality, Musharraff doesn’t have control of that part of his country. If the latter is really true, us going in would not seem to really matter that much to Musharraff.

If we do go in to get him, I say we load up on that Soviet gas so we can knock them unconscious and have a chance to capture him alive. Then he would have some real value for us. Him being martyred would work against us I would think.

Yep…GW is personally at fault for not catching OBL. Of course, Clinton never tried….if he had, of course he would have succeeeded in 30 seconds flat.

    raptored,

I have not done a thorough analysis, but I think Clinton actually tried harder to get Osama than Bush has.

Bush seems to have a hard time thinking in terms of non-state enemies and this has limited his effectiveness in fighting terror.

I hate tell you raptor, that is yesterday’s news. Clinton did take OBL more serious then G.W. takes him now. The curise missles attack on the training camps were actually an atempt to kill OBL, but the problem was that the intel from there was often days old. And OBL kept moving, so a report saying he was here when he had already moved. But anyway, G.W. Bush is the President not Clinton. BUt you may have known that?

Perhaps you recall the bet that you and I made:

Joe W.–You’re on. Oct 15, 2006. If people can drive from the airport to downtown Baghdad without an armed escort, if the country has a stable elected gov’t, if the US has pulled more than half of its 140,000 troops out, and we’re not losing 1-2 soldiers a day, then I will be happy to pay you 50 US dollars. If however, any of the above is not true, you owe me. And I won’t enjoy collecting it.I want the Iraqi invasion to be a quick success, just like every other American, liberal or conservative. But I know from the simple facts of the situation that it can never be a success the way BushCo. promised.

    Oct 15 at 8:25 am

    So now you’re going all wobbly . . . C’mon man, buck up. Don’t let reality interfere with your cherished pre-conceptions . . .

  21. Posted February 28, 2006 at 9:22 am | Permalink

BTW, a “troll” is someone who posts with the primary purpose of annoying others rather than expressing his (I say “his” because trolls are invariably men) own sincere opinion.

Using alternative aliases is not in itself “trolling” unless it is done to harass. If one uses a new alias to create a false persona for oneself, (for example, “I’m a black-Asian homosexual visiting professor, and I think Bush is the bestest president ever”) so they can lie about their background and be insincere, that’s troll behavior.

Probably the worst kind of trolling is posting over someone else’s name. That’s why I changed my screen name. Somebody kept posting over my old one.

That’s not being a troll, that fighting back AGAINST a troll.

    ******

So, “Wrong Again” Joe, by these definitions, CF is not a troll. He may irritate you by being right and showing your conclusions wrong, but he doesn’t assume fake personas, and he doesn’t take new aliases to harass people.

I on the other hand have to admit that I have engaged in troll behavior to counter-attack being attacked by trolls.

    Not lately though.

  22. Posted February 28, 2006 at 9:38 am | Permalink

Also, I’m not a conspiracy theorist. I don’t believe that BushCo. wanted OBL to attack.

It’s just that when they ignored the threat and it happened, they knew how to turn it to their advantage.

I think BushCo. see the terrorist threat for what it is, in the great scheme of things, a nuisance. Wack-os that blow up buildings whether it’s Al Qaeda or Tim McVey cause a lot of death and destruction, granted.

But the real risk to individuals in the country is pretty small.

BushCo. is all about making big money for its big backers. Effective governance is not why they stole the election.

Now if only Osama were controlling a huge oil field, then we’d take him out in a heartbeat . . .

    Gentle people,

I wonder if macho-man CF would have the cahones to address Nathan to his face with such profanity. Probably not, posting under initials and using such language toward another poster is the act of a coward.

Now this is a wonderful opportunity to use my monkey house analogy. Nathan, a casual entrant to the monkey house goes over to the baboon cage and addresses the baboon. The baboon immediately throws his little balls of shit at Nathan. The other monkeys in the monkey house chatter and congradulate the baboon on his cleverness.

The problem is, that sooner or later the only thing left in the monkey house is the caged inhabitants. As clever and intelligent as you are CF, as soon as you use profanity, you lose credibility, respect and the audience.

You see my friend, having the reddest ass in the monkey house means no more than having the reddest ass in the monkey house.

Bush: Bin Laden helped me, book says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — President Bush said his 2004 re-election victory over Sen. John Kerry was inadvertently aided by Osama bin Laden, The Washington Examiner newspaper reported Tuesday.

The al Qaeda leader had issued a taped diatribe against Bush the Friday before Americans went to the polls.

“What does it mean? Is it going to help? Is it going to hurt?” Bush told Sammon of the bin Laden tapes.

“Anything that drops in at the end of a campaign that is not already decided creates all kinds of anxieties, because you’re not sure of the effect.

“I thought it was going to help,” Bush said.

    Dear CF,

At the risk of becoming even more a pain in the ass, on March 9th I will be at a herding trial in Ferris, TX. My dog finished 2005 as the top senior Bearded Collie in the nation and this year we are trying to have the honor without the ’senior’ qualifier.

I’ll be be gone herding around the country more weekends (four and five day weekends) than I’ll be home for the next few months. I will be around on Thursday, March 16th.

I agree with XXX, I’m much too old to get physical, but then I have Marine backup!

PS Its also a sin to put mint, sugar or water into good rum…but then it is Cuban rum! You got to do something in order to choke it down!

CF, I am proud to be your first choice, lol. I would actually drive there just for the fun of meeting you all.

On another note, this is really more like a chat room than a traditional blog, but in 2002, I went to a “live” meeting of a chat room I frequent. We had a great time for three days…and then no one went back to chatting afterward!! Complete turnover of chatters.

I understand that happened after a get-together they had in 2000. Something about it being no fun after you actually met the people. Mystery is a good thing for maintaining interest.

Having said that, let me know when and where. I think it sounds like fun. Even worth a four hour drive. Maybe nwkansas will come with me. He’s a big guy too! I might need protection crossing the boarder to eastern ks.

Beardies work cattle too! Ducks, sheep and cattle. In fact to get a ASCA championship your dog has to be smart and quick enough for sheep, gentle enuough of ducks and tough enough for cattle and qualify for an advanced title on all.

March 16th is my birthday – one that I share with Jerry Lewis and Jerry Jeff Walker (composer of such classics as “Mr. Bogangles” and “Up against the wall redneck mother”). I once heard JJW play in a roadhouse outside of Ellis, KS. He was so drunk, it was hard to understand him. I hear he’s on the wagon now.

My thoughts on the meeting -1) combining firearms and this group would be a pretty nutty thing to do (I’m serious on that one)2) if it is going to happen, someone is going to need to take some kind of organizing responsibility – (I do not mention that because I wish to volunteer)3) Ian is probably a nicer person than my imagnination would allow me to conceive, but I have this basic issue about racial hatred that would prevent me from being a guest at his house. Holding it at a public place makes more sense to me.4)I doubt that there is any way that the WE would do anything to facilitate this gathering or show up at it. I am sure their lawyers would have cows if they even asked them about it.

I guess those are the only points I had.
