I was going to post this anyway, though I very seldom agree with Ian. On this we will agree. Let’s put this as a hypothetical, which generally means that it is actually happening but it gives me some deniability. A company that prides itself on its diversity, hires a person solely because of their color of skin. So they can say that they have one black. In an area where blacks make up less then one percent of the total population.But now they can claim to have as the law proscribes a work force that reflects the racial make up of the community in which they serve.
His only asset to the company is the color of his skin, he is totally worthless as a employee. In fact, others must work harder to get their work done along with the work he is to do. His pay comes from an account that is set up for three employees to pay their wages . But he does nothing to do with the department he is on paper assigned to.For all intense practical purposes, he could stay home and still be the same value to the company. He comes to work, walks around or stands and talks to everyone else while they work. It is not because he is black, but because they let him get away with it so why should he work if not expected to? Is he wrong? He is getting paid, his wages come from an account to pay for a third needed employee. The other two have to work harder to compensated Should this employee feel guilty for the company not expecting him to do anything other then being black?
Or should this be called “racism” on the part of the company, though by law they have to reflect the community that this store is in? And he is the only black whom has applied for a job at this store.
Poor guy must be bored to death!

writerdog,The problem, and truth, with your scenerio is it does happen, regardless of skin color.
The problem: Companies are not allowed to ask about race when a person applies for a job, however, if that person sues the company for not hireing them, the company must prove the person was less qualified than the person hired. A double standard imposed by government.
The same thing applies to sexual harassement in the workplace. The government has industry so scared, that even a mention of improper conduct is enough to get someone fired, whether the incedent happened or not. Which means men really have to watch their P’s &Q’s at the workplace so as not to antaganize female workers for fear of ubnsupported retaliation. In other words, “he said . . . ” Company says, “you’re fired”. I have seen this happen twice in my career. Another government imposed double standard.
It is difficult, but not impossible, to work under those conditions, but I would hate to be the employer. People should be hired on their merit, and qualifications for the job, not their color, but it’s the government makes that difficult to do.
If people everywhere stopped thinking in terms of race JM, this problem wouldn’t exist.

Ya know those govt regulations wouldnt be in place if industry could have policed itself and fixed the problems of hostile work environments. There are just some men who think women dont belong in a well paying male environment. As women enter and excel at non-traditional jobs, men have to adjust to their presence.
I agree that ALL people are way too sensitive to occasional offhand remarks. But when those “offhand” remarks are the way some men try to run women off a job, then it is a different matter. I am not saying that is what happened in the instances you cite, but you know it happens.
I mean, if you were black, would you want to give up a good paying job because the assholes you work with constantly make racist remarks, play “dixie” and wave the confederate flag? Certainly they are welcome to that speech off the job, but such tactics on the job are often used to make life difficult enough for someone to quit.
Also, one comment does not a pattern make. If the guy was in the right, and only made one comment, he should have been written up, not fired on the first offense. He should have fought his firing.
But when one minor comment is repeated daily, and hundreds of times, is that not harrassment? If co-workers had made that behavior unacceptable, and stopped it, the laws wouldnt be necessary.
I think it is worse to die a death of a thousand cuts than a death of a single wound.

Geez walker, I am not accusing you of this, but what you said there sounds an awful lot like the guys who say this:

I wonder how many women remained silent on that job until someone had enough, and took on the system. I dont know, but I am willing to bet it was harder on her after the firing than it was on the guy who was fired. Pressing those kind of charges is never easy for the victim.
kfg,I am not for one minute denying that racism and sexism don’t exit in the workplace, and I will be the first to stand up for a person being harrased for any reason. My point is government has made rules that are in conflict with the “innocent until proven guilty” rule of law this country runs under.
The two people I saw get fired were not harrasing anyone. What the person perceived as harassement was not, but the company, because of federal regulations, fired the two anyway.
I agree if someone is being harrassed, the harrasser should be fired, but they should be given the same protection as anyone accused of doing something illegal. If found guilty, they should be fired. That’s not the way it works now.

My biggest pet peeves right now are work related.Parents (usually mothers) that try to “help” and “fix things” for their adult children within the court system.A few weeks ago in municipal court session a 24 year old man was ordered to complete a portion of his community service hours that were ordered 5 months ago within a few weeks. The mother of the defendant then stood up and started telling the Judge what to do!! Telling the Judge that he hadn’t been lenient enough and all he wanted was for this kid to go to jail and she wanted to pay the fine instead of junior doing his community service.Junior has been making excuses from day 1 of this case and had plenty of time to do what he was supposed to. What really gets me is that mother calls to set up times for junior to do community service. Cut the cord already!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More pet peeves: Drivers who run cyclists off the road and wave colourful “goodbyes,” public spittings, people drunk dancing on the the floor while still holding their cups/bottles and spilling the precious alcohol, being forced to risk DUI due to the lack of public transportation in the evening.
JM, excellent post about discrimination and reverse discrimination. I’ve seen it myself. An instance where an angry woman who hadn’t gotten her way leveled charges of a sexually inaproprate remark. Several witnesses heard the exchange. The company didn’t interview any of the witnesses. Their reasoning was, “it doesn’t matter what you meant, it’s how she took it”.
There was no sexual intent, there was nothing sexual about the comment.
Guys, we’re in deep trouble.

I had a woman hitting on me at a place I worked at in Ca. I politely told her I wasn’t interested. She made references to me about a dream she had involving the two of us, suggesting sexual overtones. I again politely told her I wasn’t interested. I was flattered, but not interested. I could have easily had her canned because of that exchange, but I don’t do things that way.
The reverse; if she felt slighted by my rejection of her, she could have easily had me fired. She didn’t.
My question to you is: How many times has the above happened, and how many times has the man been fired? I will bet a bundle, the man has been canned way more than the woman. Why? Because men just don’t look at things the way women do. And that is no slight on women, believe me. It is just how it is. Men and women are different creatures. Men I can understand, Women? My brain cells leave me helpless:-)

“Kansas Illegal Immigrant Tuition Bill Gets Second Vote”
It sounds like we were not the only one that thought Rep. John Edmonds, R-Great Bend, was attempting a dubious move with a specious excuse. The issue is the bill sponsored by Rep. Becky Hutchins, R-Holton, to reverse illegal immigrant in-state tuition at state universities and colleges. Edmunds, who is Chairman of the Federal and State Affairs Committee, killed the bill, breaking his assurances to Hutchins. His excuse was that he “didn’t want to force colleagues in the House to face the politically difficult choice of voting to keep the law in place.”
Now we learn that caused so much controversy that House leaders have taken the unusual step of pushing the Chairman into allowing a re-vote on the bill. The AP quotes Edmonds – “Any vote on this bill is a bad vote in some of our members’ districts, and I think there’s no point in putting those votes on record if it’s not even going to clear the House,” said Edmonds, R-Great Bend. “But I’m going to reconsider this bill again because my speaker asked me to.”
We have the same reaction to this latest quote as we had to the first. It is the responsibility of our legislators to vote on “difficult choices” put their votes “on record”. To suggest otherwise – let alone subvert that process from happening – is nonsense. Such political gaming and running from accountability for decisions is exactly what we should not tolerate from any Kansas legislator.
In this case at least, they did not get away with it. How HB 2615 proceeds from this point should be under close scrutiny. Regardless of whether you support the bill or not, it should be decided in the open with our legislators having the opportunity to vote on it and those votes recorded as a matter of public record. That is called representative democracy.

My pet peeve is suggestive selling. You know like when you get asked if you want an apple turnover with your order, or if you want fries with that.
I do not blame the order taker or cashier. They are just following orders. So what I do when “offered” these choices is to ask to speak to a manager. I then compliment the work for the order taker/cashier to the manager.
Then I turn loose. I tell this management buffon that if I wanted fries or an apple turnover that I am perfectly capable of ordering them and that I do not appreciate the forced solicitation.
More? The other day a Quick Trip clerk told me at the conclusion of our transaction, “See ya’ later”

I know he was following policy to suggest I return and buy more stuff, but honestly.
I guess if the clerk had been female and cute I might have waited up! As it was I specualated on whether the orders to this clerk assumed that I was scatterbrained, and would need to make another visit quite soon. Or perhaps the clerk was advising me that he would visit me personally in the near future. I found the former offensive and the latter disquieting.

In the eighties I worked at the Sedgwick county Jail, on my way to work often I would stop at Quick trip. It was company policy for them to say have a good day as you would leave. I love the look on their face when I would turn and say “Can’t I am on my way to jail!”. Their jaw would drop and they would apology saying that they did not know. I told them it was OK as I was on reverse work release, I went to jail for eight hours then got to go home. LOL

My pet peve is the fact that state officials and county officials can violate the Kansas Open Records Act and get away with it. There is no one, other than a paid attorney, a person can go to to have them comply with the law. So basically our representatives have pass the KORA without any means to hold accountable those officials who violate that law. Criminals they are.

I posted a link in the first Open Thread. I was trying to direct people to my virulent rant comparing arguments against gay marriage to the ones against interracial marriage. Rather silly of me, since MySpace is a fluffy, shallow tool I use only to keep in touch with my friends back home.

Mr. President, far too many White people still believe that interracial mixing and dating are wrong and evil and that such practices will result in their genocide and complete extinction.
Although we’ve been trying to get Whites to blend themselves away for more than 40 years, our success so far has been limited.
If we are to ever create a Tan Everyman through our unintelligent redesign of humanity, we’ll have to step up our efforts.
It has been relatively easy to convince weak-minded Whites to blend because they have so little self-respect and so little self-esteem and so little awareness of themselves and the world around them that they are easily suggestible and easily conditioned to believe us when we tell them there’s no such thing as race.
Once they accept and internalize the seminal but false premise that there are no different races, it’s just a tiny step to then “logically” convince them that since different races don’t exist, it must be an irrational hatred of skin color and ignorant prejudice that keeps some Whites from freely mixing and mating with others of the one race — the “human race.”
ow got many of these weak-minded ones thinking that skin color is as minor a thing as hair color and not what it really is — a sign of a basic genetic blueprint difference in humans. Even as you read these words, these weak-minded ones are mixing and mating themselves and their lines out of existence.
We’re suggesting with this memo, Mr. President, that we should now put more money into our efforts to make the Tan Everyman a reality. There is an urgency to this because, while the weak-minded Whites are committing their own genocide, the conditioning isn’t taking with all Whites. Some of the Whites who we haven’t been able to condition are speaking out and warning other Whites of what is really going on. Once Whites are warned and once they investigate and look into these things and begin questioning what we’re doing, many of them are thereafter also immune to the conditioning. And, once they’re immune, they’re usually immune for the rest of their lives.
If we are to succeed, we need to continue to break down anti-mixing attitudes of Whites by using both positive and negative reinforcements and programs. We have to somehow reach a critical mass of Whites who have blended so that the pure White gene pool gets so small that few Whites will ever find White mates and will therefore be forced to “marry Brown” in order to fulfill their mating instincts.
Although in this memo we don’t directly address Red and Yellow genotypes and phenotypes they will, of course, also be mixed in the blending.
The major part of the funding will be used in two broad areas, as indicated below:
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENTS OR PROGRAMS
1. We’ll encourage advertising agencies to produce more slick ads showing young, vibrant Whites and Blacks having fun together. Some of the ad agencies with experience in selling cigarettes can be a big help with this. The ads should be geared toward White sensibilities and norms because it is White resistance we’re trying to break down. Especially good, in this regard, are billboards of healthy outdoor activities. For example, in the past, we might have seen billboards selling various products by having Whites laughing and canoeing down a river together. Now, we’ll start replacing a few Whites in the canoes with Blacks. We should always remember the ad man’s adage: Sell the sizzle, not the steak. We’ll sell the fun and joy, and our race mixing message will seep into the subconscious minds of many who see the ads.
2. We’ll fund more diversity training in schools. We need to get the kids when they’re very young. In books for kids, we’ll try to always show a mix of people and not just Whites. We’ll try to have the non-Whites smiling as much as possible. Remember, once kids are in school, we have them in a perfect environment to condition them as we want.
3. We’ll use more Black sports figures in various campaigns.
4. We’ll have more well-known Christian religious leaders soften the anti-miscegenation parts of the Bible by saying that such things were just metaphors or were just stories and that God didn’t really ban miscegenation. We’ll also promote ecumenism.
5. We’ll encourage TV producers to have more positive non-White characters on TV shows and also in cartoons and to put them in romantic situations with Whites.
6. In partner-type shows and films — cop shows, for example — we’ll encourage the producers to always try to have a non-White partner with a White. We’ll also ask that they make the really despicable criminals White whenever possible.
7. With your help, Mr. President, we’ll continue the Mestizo invasion of America. This has several effects. Two of the most important ones are: a. It makes Whites, who as a race, seem to have a low tolerance for crowding, feel crowded. This will cause them to naturally limit the number of children they have. Meanwhile, the Mestizos, who don’t have such a low tolerance for crowding, will keep having more children. b. It offers a “Brown step” between White and Black in the gene pool that Whites might find more acceptable. c. It will help lighten up Blacks as they mix and mate with the Mestizos.
Thus, the Mestizo invasion will tend to help eliminate the extreme White and the extreme Black genes and, as time goes on, we’ll see more and more people in this nation clustered under the center of the Bell Curve of skin color where light brown, or tan, will predominate. And, of course, this is what we want. It is in the center of the Bell Curve where the Tan Everyman lives.
8. We’ll continue to promote homosexuality since this will keep down the White birthrate. While there are Black and brown homosexuals, there aren’t nearly as many of them as there are White ones; simply because there are more Whites to start with.
9. We’ll continue to roll out terms such as “multi-cultural,” “multi-racial” and “diversity” to make it sound as though we’re looking for a world where people remain separate but where they all cooperate. Of course, that’s not what we really want at all. We want a blending of all races, religions and nations.
NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENTS OR PROGRAMS
1. We’ll continue to isolate and demonize Whites who speak out against miscegenation. We’ll encourage our media friends to use the terms “racist,” “bigot,” “hater,” “White supremacist,” “intolerant,” as much as possible when referring to Whites with any White consciousness. We’ll also continue to tell our media friends not to worry if the people they’re smearing aren’t technically what they’re being called. The label becomes the truth in the mind of the public.
2. We’ll have the major newspapers continue the policy of not publishing the race of criminal suspects when they’re not White, but publishing them when they’re White.
3. We’ll continue to secretly fund and use “private” anti-hate organizations to act as our secret surrogates to attack Whites who speak out against White genocide.
4. We’ll enlist TV commentators and radio talk show hosts to portray Whites who resist miscegenation as haters and bigots.
5. In all ways possible, we’ll discourage White unity and try to keep Whites from seeing themselves as different from other races. We’ll continue our work to convince Whites that their identity is found not in their genes, but in being a fan of a particular sports team, or as an American, or as a member of a particular church or political party.
6. We’ll work to enact hate crime laws that define hate down so that almost any White who speaks out against White genocide can be portrayed as a hater and a criminal.
7. We’ll continue to distract Whites from the truth about our One World plans by making them think that what we mean is one “economic” world; not a one-race, a one-religion and a one-government world.
